This exhaust was made by a guy named Doug Cook who is no longer in business. He was ARC Fabrication. He also made custom titanium frames.

He made "spaghetti" exhausts with two pipes that bled off a little to each other at different points. Looks like a maze but apparently the benefits was a broader torque range.

I couldn't find any other pics. I wish I could. His welds were artwork.

Definitely one of the best looking pipes Toys. Very good work.

Some gorgeous LOOKING bits shown above.

My own custom muffler is not so pretty, but it's darned effective. I took the opportunity today, while my muffler is away at Jet-Hot, to put all the stock bits (including oem muffler) back onto my motor including having the latest oem flash. Here's a pic of the dyno screen (printer not working):

a

The blue line is oem. The red line is with my custom muffler of my own design matched with fuel mapping.

Although peak hp is unchanged, as you can see there is a worthwhile hp increase across the usable range.

And the torque increase is quite large. Sound increase is nice but modest, registering the same 94 dB(A) as the oem despite being 'louder' to the ear (quality change).

That's with prototype #2. Prototype #3, which has improvements at the inlet and outlet even over prototype #2, hasn't been on the dyno yet.

Man i love this exhaust posts.. Keep em up.
I see some nice custom jobs for sure.

Question has anyone thought of using a chambered muffler, Something like a spin tech or Flowmaster DESIGN?

i hate straight through pipe... Just too damn loud IMO. IMO you could make a nice exhaust system to get the sound you want and then get a tune, to fix any lean/rich conditions... In the end a tune will most likely be required...

I'm i the market for exhaust but i hate open pipe setups and i can't see why the slip ons aren't under the bike.why do the slip ons need to stick out like Japanese bikes?

the all out race pipes look nice, but i'm a cheapass and i know the sound would drive me nuts.

My downpipe material will be here today I hope. So I plan on getting something done there but all in all the stock downpipe I like.I believe its designed like that for a reason.I plan on making a downpipe but for some reason I think that the stocker downpipe looks tough. It does sound good.I plan on buying some screen mesh and making a small vortex cone to see what it sound like that way too.Its also tucked nicely.

Ive looked into flowmaster designs but they are all way to big and not enough sound detonating material. It would be really raspy ,big and heavy. And a stainless version of there smaller ones cost$$$.They are also race pipes. So there loud. They come in single or double baffle only.

I've considered trying out a spin tech pro street muffler.

I've e-mailed the owner multiple times. He can make a custom build, 3 x 7 x 12" case. We think a 2" center inlet, dual 1.75" offset outlets, turned down on either side of the rear tire would do the trick.

I've already got the Merge pipe from my HMF slip-on, which is why I'd go with a 2" muffler inlet. Slipping the spintech over the HMF merge pipe with no modification just to see how it sounds... pretty tempting.

Good idea. I wish I could find one on eBay for sale . Or a jardine that got screwed up with a good downpipe. Hopefully it warms up somemore today in Ohio so I can cruise my new setup.I was going to do a YouTube video riding my bike. But the Iphone mic doesn't like deep bassy tones. It sounds horrible when I record. I thought about trying it with a wool sock over the mic.Anybody have tips on recording sound.

Justa4banger and Torquaholic... I don't know why i didn't think of that! i live only a couple miles from Spin Tech and had them build the whole exhaust that is on my '72 El Camino.

I would need him to build my down pipe though. maybe have him put a nice little x-pipe in there while he's at it. but that's an excellent idea... i love the sound of their mufflers, they are very unique. I'll try and stop by that place this week or weekend and see what the owner says.

Also have you guys ever heard of DNA mufflers? They are round with some crazy helical style baffle, not straight through but not restrictive at all. I'd be interested in trying something like this too

Ya I believe the design is cool but the noise has to go somewhere? They show on there website this is a race pipe in smallest 2.5 in inlet outlet 15" or 18" long.it would have to be a custom size made for our r.I had the local company do just that for mine .A version at 60% the size of their version.I have a flowmaster on my stang with no packing and its really loud. Its a hollow cackle noise.Anything without packing is going to have some kind of cackle.Just my 2 cents. But a cool design. These companys nowadays can think of anything.Im hitting up a test drive soon.I took out my pfu and am running it stock 100 f&r.Who whoo .Its sounds awesome!!

Straight through no baffled jardines I believe are 1.625 outlet or 1.75 I think. It would have to be a smalller version.just my 2 cents again. But very cool.

Do you have a close up pic of your exhaust/downpipe?

usually a digital camera will record good sound, even if the video quality is poor, but the video isn't the important part anyway.

Captain_america, i first heard of the DNA mufflers years ago, when 5.0Mustang magazine did an article on them. The pic above showed the older design... pretty sure there's a DNA-2(newer design) as well. I looked into those mufflers before emailing spin tech too, and also saw the muffler sizes are too long for what I'm looking to do. Good post though. What were your impressions of the build quality of the spin tech? How would you describe the sound, high or low pitched, raspy or clean? Any descriptions to get an idea of how it will sound compared to the HMF perforated straight-through. Thanks.

It is obvious that buell did a hell of a job on the factory exhaust. Blackflash, How your hacked up down pipe will perform with the muffler you've made... i'd be interested in seeing the results. Maybe there's something about the large expansion chamber just aft of the Buell merge that works for this bike?

"Maybe there's something about the large expansion chamber just aft of the Buell merge that works for this bike?"

Torquaholic, I believe thats true to some extent with the completely stock setup but also incorporating what is done in the whole muffler to its end result.

Buell chose to go a more conventional system with their race system but using a fair size mid pipe. With good ECM tuning I believe it could be used just fine on the street but also sacrificing some low end response below about 5500 rpm's.

I think a compromise has been accomplished with several systems on the market right now, some better then others with different but good performance and sound levels. I also believe individual fabricators can find this compromise also. It just takes time and some experimenting.

The dyno is only a necessity for all out performance for racing. Any 1125 will be completely adequate for street use and occasional track days with most systems unless you have a death wish or loose a bunch with a poorly designed system. Unbelievable how much fun you can have with only 146 crank H.P. Maybe how you feel riding your bike is important also in looks, sound and handling. Just a common sense take FWIW. Bob

The stock downpipe is a great piece in my eyes. I'm at my friends after a quick 15 minute cruise. My impressions are
1 good top end power.
2 good sound
3 midrange is crisp
4 3-4 k had a flat spot.
5 1 st to second wheelies were easily obtainable
I'm a 175 lb rider.
6 not annoying sound.
It is similiar to drummer.
I will Play with vortex cones and see how much tone is reduced for the people who want less sound. My girl has a droid my iPhone sucks for sound. The digital camera I had is broke so that won't work.
I'll post some sound soon. All in all I don't care if I sell em I'm completely happy compared to my jardine.

Torquaholic: Here is a link to some you tube videos of my car so you can hear it for yourself, not a bike but what the hell. Those guys do fantastic work and i was very pleased. He charged me $600 to go from the headers to 2.5" dual through an X-pipe through 2 sportsman mufflers and dump just in front of the axle

WOW you guys have been busy while i was flying... : D

I was also thinking spintechs, since i had a set on my stang and they sounded great. As for sound deadning material whether its steel wool, fiberglass, etc... none of that stuff is necessary if the muffler has enough chambers... I have sound clips somewhere of my 4 cyl turbo stang with spintechs and later magnaflow mufflers (simliar style to FMF's, HMF, etc).... the spintechs sounded WAY tougher and really didn't give up much for power... I actually had spintechsfirst, but thought it was too quite... later went with straight pipe, that was obnoxious and then added magnaflows, they took the raspiness out of the exhaust note, but it was still too damn loud..

Anyways i was thinking one of there smaller mufflers since they are pretty compacted and well built. I was thinking maybe adding some thin sheet metal to incorporate a belly pan into the muffler. i mean the spintech itself is just a rectangle box.. easy to work with.

My goal over anything is to add some sound. the damn bike is already too damn fast for my capabilities... so making it faster doesn't seem to wise. on the flip side i do understand that any muffler change basically needs a tune to get it right.. so in the end i'm sure i'll gain a few ponies.. i just want more muscle sound... Oh and i hate how the stock exhaust dumps the gas on the rear wheel/brake.. it sucks cleaning those things
