Where the hell do you put your gas cap when fueling?

I have never had a bike (not counting dirtbikes) that had a gas cap that wasn't attached in some way.

I have a CR and I have yet to find a good spot for the damn thing.

Umm, on the raised concrete pump base works for me.

It's not like you're going to drive away and forget it.

LOL - that was something I had to get used to with my first Buell too. After 3 of them I have a routine now:

1. Stop bike, put key in gas cap.
2. Swipe card, enter zip, select Premium
3. When pump is ready, with one hand turn key and remove gas cap.
4. With other hand, remove gas nozzle and start fueling.
5. When finished, reverse order

I used to leave the cap on top of the pump, but using the method above it limits the time that the gas tank is wide open to contaminants.

Keyless gascap makes life a little easier at the pump. Tops of the gas pumps can get filthy.

I agree, just don't ride with two keys and half a brain.

I put mine on the pump or the seat if the pump is not flat on top.

I stop, remove my gloves and set them on top of the cluster, remove the cap and set it upside down on my gloves.

I can't recall ever having a bike where it was attached ... Not sure I'd want it to be! I just set mine on the raised concrete island surrounding the pump, or sometimes the top of the pump making sure it won't roll off. I've been known to carry a paper towel in my pocket so I'm not setting it on dirty surfaces ; )

He has direct tv. The cable was a real hassle, tripping old ladies in cross walks and such as he rode down the road.

I think CCryder is has the solution. Very simple. One question though, do you end up with any fuel dripping from the cap?

I found a spot above the clutch master cylinder where I can set the cap (rather precariously) but I am always worried about dripping gas as I arrange it there.

Both.

Trying to keep the dish aligned was a real bear turning and burning LOL!

On my daily commute I like to keep informed and entertained. At 140 miles/ day minimum, even on nice TN back roads, I like to have some options.

Filling up 1x/ day I needed to find somewhere to hang my cap. A few years ago I put my cap on top of a gas pump and there was no top. Down it fell! Speaking of a PITA trying to get that!

Anyway, time2Work.

I usually stay on the bike and rest the cap
between the handlebar and instrument cluster.

Frankly, this is the first time I've ever thought about this. I guess the unexamined life is not worth living.

HD, it's a matter of focus and setting your priorities while riding.

BTW B/T my ST1300 and the 1125rt I have well over 100,000 s'miles with similar setups w/o any issues of distraction.

Gloves on saddle, gas cap on top of gloves. I've done this with every Buell I've owned and never had an issue with the cap falling off the seat.

The other option, of course, is on top of the pump.

Maybe I am just paranoid but once I leave the house, I don't like to let anything I own get out of my possession. It may not be much of a risk but I don't want to have anything I need to get back on the road out of my direct sight.

I guess I just don't trust the universe to not just pop my gas cap out of existence.

This may also just be a safety mechanism since, anything that is out of my sight I tend to lose track of.

Put an idiot string on your gas cap, just like the one you had for your mittens as a kid.

Ccryder I am jealous of your commute. Thats some real beautiful country you get to ride through everyday. I ride 52 miles RT on 295 in NJ. Its frogger sharing the roads with the fine people that MTV showcases on Jersey Shore. That show is why people from S Jersey dont go to N Jersey.

CCryder- I ~USED~ to have a similar setup on my FJR. Zumo550 and the same XM unit. I gave up with that arrangement.

I ended up buying the Garmin XM antenna and never turned back. LOVE that set up and the garmin unit picks up signals way better than the XT ever did...and it's water proof...and it's much smaller.

I use a techmount stem mount for the Zumo and a ram mount for the antenna just over the clutch master. Makes logging those countless miles much easier.

The attached shows a camera in place of the antenna for our ride through deals gap, but you get the idea.

Kirb
(to keep on topic- that's a buell tank bag!)

On the CR, and the Lightning before that:

Turn bars to left lock.
Put cap on bars inboard of the left instruments.
Gas dripping? I have been in a hurry and soaked the top of the airbox and the cluster with fuel. Wipe it down, and go like Hell. From what I can tell, everything on the bike is impervious to gasoline. No worries.

KC_10, they are some really nice roads. I have 3-4 routes so I can vary the ride.

BF, the charging system is stock 08'. I do keep the revs up around 4,500-5,000 in 3rd gear. I can even run my Gerbing gear w/ all my electronics. The only time I've had an issue is when I had a loose battery connection. I now check those connections at each oil change (about once/ month).

Kirb, I thought about the XM antenna but I already had the Roady XT. Besides it's a PITA to change all of that b/t the St1300, 1125rt and, my F-150.

Later

Where the hell do you put your gas cap when fueling?

On top of the fuel pump with the key in so I can't "forget" it. This also serves to keep it semi-stable without the interior surface of the cap contacting the pump.

If the pump top isn't flat enough, get off the bike & put it on the ground while I fuel. Again, with the key in so I can't "forget" it.
