Just curious as to those of you that have done your own valve adjustment(s), did the clearances actually need adjusting ?

I'll be doing mine over the holidays, just wondering if I'm in for any shim swapping.

Main reason I ask...I've gotten spoiled by my 03, Yamaha R1...with almost 98,000 miles on it...never needed any shim adjustments. Checked it once a year...at Christmas break.

Just had mine done at 11790 miles. Three valves needed to be shimmed. I was going to do it, but had was asked to do some overtime...Anyway, with the latest flash and new plugs, the bike runs stronger than ever and there's a lot less mechanical noise. This was a good investment.

i bet you could search for your answer and yield excellent results.

i did mine myself. it took about 2 evenings to tear everything off and put back together.

dont worry about new exhaust gaskets or valve cover gaskets; you dont need it. get spark plugs. and replace.

valves did not need adjusting. at 12.4k miles.

Bcrawf68 is the only I have heard that has needed an adjustment at 12k.

About how many hours does the check/adjustment procedure normally take?

Found that thread hunting the "search" function late last night.

Looks like it will be helpful in the tear down.

Thanks Froggy

I just did a quote for a 12.4k service, labor was 5 hrs.
It took longer when I did it.

Time to do it again sometime this Spring, I'm at 22.9k now.

If you need shims, they are V-Rod shims, 2 or 3 bucks a pop.

I did my own valve inspection. They were not out of spec.

It also took me longer than 5 hours. I expect to get it done in less than 8, next time. I enjoyed doing it, and look forward to doing it again.
