Just like the title says, I was bored and I had my new 1125R sitting in my shop, just crying out for some attention. Stock, it just looked funny parked next to my XBS with an R tail. That big looong 1125R license plate holder..

Time for action..Now to play with crayons... OK, maybe a Sharpie instead of a Crayola

Some 1/16" sheet aluminum I had laying around in the scrap bin cut to match poster board template, as well as a couple hunks of 1/8" wall 2" angle aluminum cut down to turn signal stock size and angled so that the turn signal would be perpendicular to the ground. A little tig welding and ....

On the bike, it looks like this...
For mounting I used the original nutsert on the front and drilled 2x 10-24 screws so I didn't have to mess with the 2 angled original tail mounting screw nutserts.

I didn't do anything for a license plate light just yet, other than drill five 5/16" holes for the taillight bulb to shine down thru the inner fender. The LED bulb I have lights up red and doesn't reflect much light to the plate, so I may go back to the original filament bulb or I have a small white LED light I may wire and locate at the plate.

I've since pulled it off and painted it gloss black.
My new signal mounting tabs are moved in 1" on each side. The new width between mounts is 4", just enough to clear the license plate.

Total cost, some scrap aluminum and about 2 to 2 1/2 hours of time.

Sorry about the fuzzy pictures, but between compressing and resizing to meet badweb specs.....

Could I have bought one off of one of the BadWeb sponsors? Sure, but what fun would that be.....
And no, don't ask, I won't be making anymore.

Looks really good, got any side shots? My concern is that the tail will look stunted with a third of the tire hanging past it.

I have some tag bolts that I'm going to mount that have white LEDs for the tag and red LEDs facing backwards that I'm going to tie to the brake light. I don't have the package anymore, I got them at the local Jap bike store.

If you still have your pattern could you scan it and post it full size? Then we could print it out and then cut it out.

Now you need to get an intergrated tail light turn signal unit so you can loose the stock signals. That's my plan this winter.

BLFan, my inspection guy doesn't care for non DOT approved turn signals, hence the modification.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the XBLights or the CLear Alternatives are DOT approved.

That and this was free apart from a little time.

Sknight, I do still have the pattern. I'll see what I can do to get it on here.

Nice work! One suggestion for you or anyone else that makes another one . . . I have the Jardine unit which is pretty similar and which I like a lot. It has a nice feature you might want to incorporate: the plate is angled back a little more so it actually continues to work like a fender, while still being readable.

Still, very impressive!

Nice work. I made an identical one for mine awhile back. I looked at the jardine pictures and saw how easy it would be to make oneinstead of paying for it. I made mine on my lunch breaks at work. I had saved the patterns on paper so all people would have to due is trace them on their alum. or metal then just cut and drill them out. But I lost the patterns.

Very nice Dan - one of the few I like as much/more than my own.

You're probably right toona.

We don't have those inspections in Ohio, so I'll I have to do is play dumb (I'm really good at it btw) if a cop asks about it. I see. Ton of the import bike guys doing it so I do t think it's a priority issue in my area.

Well the XBlights with the red lens cover are DOT approved, or at least the lens says so : D

hehe good call Froggy,

and if you went the extra route and got the new 2010 Factory Led tail and split the clear lens off you would have a "DOT approved" Clear tail.

Around here if you're not drunk or doing 10 mph over the limit the cops don't wanna be bothered. They could care less about plate lights and dot legal signals.
