I ran out of gas on the way home tonight. Coasted off the expressway into a gas station and filled it up, fired it up and rode it home with no issues.

When I parked it in the garage and shut it off, I noticed something odd. Normally, I just shut off the bike, pull the key and head inside so I don't know how long it's been doing this, or if it just started.

In the silence of the garage, I heard a very faint chiming sound come from the engine, followed by what sounded like an electric motor spooling up, then stopping. After about ten seconds, the process repeated... first the chime, then the sound of the motor spooling up and then stopping.

This went on for quite some time... in fact, to the best of my knowledge, it's still in the garage doing it. Just to be on the safe side, I put the Battery Tender on so the battery doesn't run down but...

WHAT THE HECK IS IT DOING?? And more importantly, how do I make it stop??

Fuel pump cycling. Normal.
The early 08's did it for a much longer period of time, the very first reflash shortened the amount of time it did this to prevent battery issues.

You could still have a bubble or two of air in the system and that will cause the pressure to change. The fuel pressure sensor will tell the fuel pump to kick on to maintain pressure in the fuel rail to ease hot starts.

An easy cure, don't run out of gas!!

It was strange. I hopped on the bike and headed home. About five miles into the trip, the fuel light came on. In the past, I've gone almost twenty miles before filling up, so I wasn't terribly concerned. Then, five miles later... it DIED!!

Fortunately, it was right before my exit. UNFORTUNATELY, my exit was at the top of a long hill. Took me a while to push it up to the top, but at least I was able to ride it down the other side... and the gas station was right at the bottom.

Wonder why the light came on so LATE??

That is kinda strange. There are many variables with that type of "fuel level sensor". I usually get 20 miles out of mine too but I try and not push it over 5-8 miles since IIRC there have been others that have seen less than a 20 mile "reserve" range.

One of these days I'm going to carry some fuel with me and intentionally run it out so I can see how much mine really holds. Normally, the light comes on at about 160-165 miles and it's 4.2 gallons to fill up. The other day, I put 4.7 in it. Of course, I was running it considerably harder during my 3 days of riding and had a couple of runs up over triple digits. Lots of time spent the first day in 3rd and 4th gear instead of crusing along in 6th. I have no idea what my reserve range is at this point. I rode maybe 20 miles after the light came on and managed to do 150+ in that time and still didn't run out of fuel.

FWIW, when I filled it at the pump, it took 4.998 gallons.

i never really came to the 1125 board till i bought mine a few days ago... i won't get it for a week or two, but im shocked of all the threads of shit gone wrong on these....

i hope im not one of them.

Yeah... I'm hoping that's just because those of us with probs are on here typing.. while everyone else is out enjoying. : ) That's my optimistic side anyway!! Hope to get mine back with a new rear head either Saturday or Monday.

I ran out of gas a few weeks ago, my light was also on for only a few miles. It was very cold out, I chalked it up to the sensor being cooled by the air and not by the gas and giving a false reading.

Also, the noise is the R2D2 droid orgy. You should ride with a group of 1125's then park for the real excitement. : )

It was pretty cold last night too. Odd because I rode all last winter (I picked up the bike in November) and didn't notice anything like this happening then.

Ah well... lesson learned... use the tripmeter as I've done with every other motorcycle I've ever owned (even those with fuel gauges).
