Hello,

I've been lurking for a few months now, just decided to register as I have a question/problem regarding my 08...

I installed an RT5, bike was running well for about 100-125 miles before the issue arose. The problem is some sort of missing/popping.

I can hold revs anywhere from 2k-5k with no load (N) and it will make a "pop" noise and a little stumble every one to two seconds. Also, on the freeway at 5-6k it will pull fine up to about 75% throttle, beyond that it will pop, pop, pop, pop, and stumble and reluctantly accelerate. If I hammer it beyond 8k or so, it seems to clean up and go...

No mods besides RT5, bike has 3k miles.

Any ideas what is going on, fellas? Any help, advice, etc is greatly appreciated!

Just a guess, you need more fuel and a K&N air filter.

As an RT-5 owner, one of the things I had to clean up with my initial installation was the integrity of the connection between the headers and the new S-bends (the short sections of midpipe supplied with the RT-5. Not exactly "S" shaped, but that's what they are called). Any exhaust leak is going to exacerbate the problem.

Chris at Jardine advised me to loosen the connections with the engine cold and then torque them down just moderately. Then run the engine to get the headers very hot and tighten them down to spec while hot (I don't remember the spec now). I found a good way to check for leaks was to hover a lit incense stick around the connections and watch the smoke for turbulence.

+1 K&N. The addition of the Jardine Pro-Tune 3 card also dramatically improved the performance of the bike.

to me...sounds like the pipe leaned it out a little to much..try putting the old pipe back on and see if it clears up..
if it does ...the pro tune 3 is a option..they have come a long way with it..if not, a good custom tune will help big time also..

If his AFV is 90 or lower would that not indicate that the ECM took fuel away indicating he was not getting as much air through the system as before? That, to me would tell me his new muffler is not flowing as much air as before. More flow and his AFV's would add fuel increasing the AFV number. Just thinking logically. Bob

Looks awful good to me Greg. Seems like the new muffler is flowing good and maybe adding to an already lean EPA bike. A fuel tuner would probably be in line here. Pro Tune3 or some other proven system would probably help. Bob

I don't understand how it ran well for a couple hundred miles, and then just decided it wanted to do this crap. I'm reluctant to spend 2-3 hundred on some sort of fuel box and NOT resolve the problem.

I'm surprised no one else has had this problem. Is it possible a lean condition could hurt the plugs?

Weak spark? Bad coil maybe?

TRY PUTTING THE OLD PIPE BACK ON AND SEE IF IT CLEARS UP...if it does...pipe issue...if it doesn't look else where...
Weak spark? Bad coil maybe?...YEA..could be 100 different problems..."take a asprin before you have brain surgery"

Greg, just a possibility, but try the plug cleaning deal BMC has in their owners guide. Might just be a fouled plug or two. KISS principal, simple things first. Bob

Gregt, Whatever people will tell, you, I promise you it is fuell. Find a solution, to get a good amount of fuell in every fuel cell.. Go to a tuner or dyno tuner who is well known with Buells or send your ECM to somebody who can program it depending on what you can do/want to do yourself, and al your problems are gone...

If you plan on running a after market exhaust expect to tune it. If thats not for you then leave the stock can on the bike. Its that simple.

These bikes are designed to learn based on the stock setup.

You were right, I was wrong.

Runs like a top with stock exhaust back on.

I guess I'll get something to fatten it up.

How refreshing, someone who actually cops to being wrong. Kudos, Gregt.

One an only tangentially related note: for those of you who have tuned (using aftermarket software or whatever): how was your fuel economy affected? Putting my Jardine RT-5 and Protune-3 bought me about 5 MPG on the open road, but probably cost me about 2 mpg in the city. Just curious what happens in an "every fuel cell" solution.

Marco,

How do you personally feel about the ProTune deal?

From what I can tell, there are BETTER solutions, albeit slightly more dificult/time consuming?
