I've been watching another thread for a couple of days that has had a heated discussion on gear, squids, hot weather, crashes, and each others intelligence, manhood, lineage, and social skills, among other things.

After chewing on it a bit, I want to ask a couple of questions of you, my friends. This is no means scientific, as it will not be verifiable, but I think it will be interesting. I'll try to tally the results and keep track of it as best I can.

Heres what I want you to do. Post up, all of you, with the following information.

1. How long you've been riding, and if it's daily (i.e. commuting) or recreational.

2. ATGATT or SOGSOTT? (AllTheGearAllTheTime or SomeOftheGearSomeOfTheTime)

3. Have you ever Crashed?

4. How many times?

5. Single rider crash, or somebody else caused it. (This is the MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION.)

If anyone has links or suggestions as far as resources for statistics on the last question, please post up.

I have an opinion, but I want to keep it to myself for the moment to try to not skew the "results" of this "experiment".

Thanks, and I look forward to your responses.

1. close to 21 years give or take. Daily driver.
2. Depending on the weather. Normally i wear a heavy leather jacket, helmet.kevlar gloves, heavy duty boots. If its really hot i wear a t-shirt and helmet.
3. Small crash once. Oil drain plug fell out and i slid like i was on ice. ended upside down in a rain ditch with the bike on top of me.
4. Only 1 crash.
5. Single rider. I should have tightened the oil plug better.

1. Been away for 10 years, but rode for 15 years more or less before that. I'll answer based on when I rode regularly
2. SOGSOTT
3. Yes
4. Twice
5. Single rider-
First was oil or some substance like it while in a curve. It was a big curve and was going fairly slow. Result torn jeans and small scrape.
2nd Going to a buddy's house at night. A house was being moved that day(why people do that I don't get, buy another one where you want it!), and I didn't think about dirt and gravel the process left on the road. Hit the gravel turning onto the block and dumped. I slid into the bike and the bike slid into the curb. Luckily nothing to me, and the bike had minimal scrapes. I remember thinking that a '78 or so KZ750 sure seemed like it weighed a ton picking it off the ground. Maybe the adrenaline had worn off by then.

Carbon,

You aren't going to get honest answers to #5. Most riders can't let their ego go and just admit it was rider error.

Which it probably is about 75-80% of the time, if not more.

When studies of single-vehicle motorcycle crashes are done, they almost always come to the conclusion that lack of rider skill is the primary reason the crash happens.

The inability to NOT target fixate (as in, learn to push on the bar until your engine cases and wrist drags the ground and NEVER give up making the corner) and lack of braking skills (i.e., riders tend to use the rear brake when attempting to slow the bike causing skids, lockups and instability, which is stupid and wrong) are cited in over 2/3rds of the recorded crashes.

I'll try and find links to a couple of the papers I've read on the subject, but they all conclude the same: it's mostly rider error, but few riders will admit that.

A similar statistic from the car guys happened a while back: Someone asked typical american drivers "Are you significantly better than average behind the wheel?" Something like 75% of Americans said "Yes!"

Laughable people we are.

1. 6 years, then 12 year break, now 2.

2. ATGATT on a "ride" (full leathers). I'll wear jeans instead of leather lower on an in-town short hop, but with leather jacket, gloves, boots, helmet, etc. Never less than that.

3. Yes.

4. Once.

5. Single rider crash. Wasn't paying attention and that translated into grabbing a whole handful of brake and tucking the front.

1) 6 years on the street
2) SOTGSOTT, although that only applies to very hot days - otherwise I wear everything (sometimes just jeans, though)
3) Not on the street
4) 0
5) N/A, although of all the "close calls" I've had, I estimate it's about half and half me getting over my head or misreading a corner and other drivers not paying attention.

edit: damn i type slow

1: about 26 years. usually daily and recreational.

2: most of the gear most of the time

3: yes

im going to go with 4 on the street.(if you want to concider any contact with a car a crash then ive lost track of the times ive been tagged by a car that ran an intersection in this college town, alot of our local population never drove before they got to this country for school)

first one. litterally 8 legal miles on my first street bike when i was 16. army recruiter in a goverment vehicle ran a yield sign at about 60mph in town, 1 block from the grade school(he was headed that direction, thank god he hit me and not a little kid) totaled my bike and his car. the front of my bike put a hole through the driver door, the back a hole through the rear pass door, the front took out the quarter panel, the rear took out his tail lights and bumper. my right hand took out the rear pass door frame and roof of the car. you could see my hand print in the top of the door frame and the edge of the roof where i grabbed the car on the way over the top. it was actually a pretty cool hand outline indented into the car. no gear... got a couple scratches and a broken thumb.

second one, brand new back tire, cold road(november) lost the rear turning right leaving a stoplight(not even 5 mph) but the bike hooked my glove and pulled me to the ground for a nice broken nose(leather coat only gear). that one sucked. i was barely even above idle. i dont even get a good story out of it.

third one, stripped about 6-8 inches of teeth off the drive belt under hard acceleration. when the pulley caught the teeth again she decided to flip over backwards at about 60-70. couple scratches on my hand and roughed up jeans and leather coat(only gear i had on)

fourth one. some will remember this... leaving hals at homecoming the other year. jenn pulling the trailer infront of me. i looked at traffic as im pulling out onto the road, and apparently while doing that she decided the car a couple blocks down was to close to pull out infront of so on go the brakes on the car. i look back and there sits the car and trailer. needless to say i slammed on the brakes. the frontend folded under on the sandy junk in the median and i tagged the back of the trailer. fun fun. what was even better is that some car pulled up less then a foot from me while i was getting the bike picked back up and started honking for me to get out of the way. i freaked the f out on him(wasnt a good time for him to act like a douche canoe). he peeled off, when i think he realized i was yank him through the window even though he wouldnt roll it down, and i proceeded to finish picking up the bike.}

1, since I was kid, started off on dirt. That stopped around 10 or 11 or so, then I started again, this time on the street on the street at like 19 or something. Daily rider.

2, ATGATT

3, Yes

4, Lost count. Once on my XB12SS, 3 times in 3 weeks on my XB12X, about a dozen times total on that bike, once on a Suzuki GS500F.

5, All single rider crashes, except for my crash on the SS and the GS500F, both of those involved hitting a car.

Oh, and if it wasn't for ATGATT, I wouldn't be posting this, hell I don't think I would of ever made it to badweb.

2. Atgatt, ive hit the ground twice and road rash sucks when gear fails

3. Yes (ground, sky, ground, sky sucks!)

4. Twice

5. The first one I looped my ZX9r during a third gear wheelie.

The second was at Deals Gap on my RC51, lost the rear tire and it bucked me off a high side. Funny thing is you really see ground sky ground sky ground sky as your flipping across the road into the ditch!

1. Ten years on the street, mixed commute and recreation.

2. ATGATT.

3. Yes.

4. Once.

5. SUV turned left in front of me leaving me less than 2 seconds to react (verified by 2 accident investigators). Obviously, it was impossible to avoid an impact, but I escaped with my life... and eight fractures. Because I always ride ATGATT I'm still alive, still have a right foot, and have no road rash scars. Heck- I didn't even lose consciousness thanks to Arai! Thankfully, the inattentive driver had excellent insurance (I've had five surgeries so far, and the current bill is north of 1/2 million dollars) and they decided to settle for the maximum policy coverage amount (seven digits). All in all, I was extremely lucky.

Lesson: ATGATT saved my life, and it can save yours too. There is NO GOOD ARGUMENT for not wearing every piece of safety equipment every time you ride. If you think there is, stop fooling yourself- it's time to start taking riding seriously.
