How many hours labor did you guys get charged and what was the total cost for the first scheduled maintenance? In the owner's manual the first service looks like it's nothing more than a glorified oil change, but the dealership told me that it would be 3 hours labor with a total cost of approximately $300. I don't have a problem paying that; I just want to make sure I'm not getting hosed.

$300 for 3 hrs. labor + filter + oil is a bit steep IMO.

I can't tell you honestly if that's the going rate though as I did the 1st service myself at home. Cost was ~$40.00 and my time.

Fawk that. I am not paying 3 hrs of labor for an oil change..lol

What else is checked on the first maintenance stop?

Re-tighten bolts here & there?

Sorry I'm not at home to look at the manual

They check all the fluids, *critical* fasteners, & brakes as well as changing the oil.

I did mine myself. Most expensive part was the filter. Dealer item.

If you're a bit mechanical, just check everything out and make sure it's as it should be.

The hardest part is sorting out the drain pan/kickstand interface...

I actually thought that the first maintenance was going to cost about 100-150 tops.

$300 can almost buy me a nice Arai V helmet.

I'm going to order the service manual soon. The best 60 bucks someone can spend IMO.

For reference, my buddy whose got a Duc 696 that also got a a rear ohlins shock installed Only paid 246OTD for his first scheduled maintenance.

Wait till you pay for the valve adjustment and related PM! LOL!

Wait a minute...what does is cost to PM a Duc/KTM/ect...per their scheduled stops?

Bottom line, buy the service manuals if you are mechanically inclined and get to understand what came with the ownership experience.

Nothing relevant to this machine is "hard" once you "learn" it...just don't learn the Hard/Cheap way...as YOU will pay, one way or another in the end.

What about the warranty?
I know for some of my bikes in the past maintaining the PM schedule was a condition of warranty.

I did all scheduled maintenance on my XB9 and just marked it in the manual. When any warranty issues arose, my dealer did not fuss about it. I think it depends on the dealer really.

I do the same w/my cars on the general maintenance, and so far have not had any issues with warranty work when needed.

The only good thing about my first scheduled maintenance was that the dealer would perform a dyno test "free".

So I'm going to let the dealer do the first scheduled maintenance, get the baseline dyno so I can compare it against the OSB performance flash I am going to download afterward.

Regards and Good Luck,
Chris

On the Ducati 696 the 600 mile maintenance costs 98.00USD plus the 4 quarts of oil & price of filter.

I can ask my buddy on how much the valve adjustment costs. I know for the 08 and newer models costs are much better then the older models.

I think its the same price for the Duc 848. But let me confirm.

Just called Cowboy Harley here in Austin. The guy was a bit confused when I said 1125 CR. Did not seem to know that they sell Buells there..LOL

I'm definitely don't feel comfortable taking my bike where they hardly know the product

They quoted me 320USD with synthetic oil.

My dealer told me not to bother coming until I hit 1K, unless it needed it, which it didn't. The *sales* dept told me it'd be about $100 when I bough the bike and inquired about the cost of maintaining it. I know that can be a significant cost to owning a new vehicle, in addition to the others, and made sure to ask beforehand. Then again, its was the sales department, which, unfortunately, are full of salesman. Mines getting the 1K service now (plus fixing the leaky slipper clutch) and I'll let everyone know if I had to make the service department hold to the sales departments promise.

I just got back from dropping the bike off, and I know what you mean Puredrive. I walked up to the guy at the service desk and said, "I'm dropping my bike off for its 620 mile service." He replied by scrunching his eyebrows together and giving me the "what the hell are you talking about" look. I then said, "It's for a Buell." And he was like, "Oh yea of course." It's unfortunate. Seems like people become Ducati mechanics because they want to work on Ducatis, while people become Buell mechanics because they have to. But now I've gone and trolled my own post with my rambling. I’ll fill you guys in when I get the bill.

at the 620 mile service a valve adjustment is reqired to make sure valves have proper alignment. this may seem like a minor adjustment but it makes all the difference in the world later on when you get more miles on the bike

where did you read about the valve adjustment at 620miles there gman?
wasn't in my owner's or service manual for my 2008 1125r. oil and filter change along with overall inspection. takes about an hour, a filter and 3 qts. put your kickstand in the oil drainpan when you pull the filter.

Valves aren't till 12,400. And Clbofaz, you should have had the first service done at 620 miles, per the manual, not 1k.

well smoke common sense would tell you when u get the first service done on your bike at 620 they are changin the oil. the first oil in your bike is break in oil which is different from the normal oil you put in. a valve adj is required when goin from break in to reg oil

1125s as are all HD/Buell bikes except CVO, ship with H-D 20W-50 Dino oil.
620 miles/ 1000 Km is first service - change oil, check fluids and critical fasteners.

A critical fastener is one that, if it falls off, you die.

Valve check is done every 12.4 k MILES.
Fork oil replaced every 18.6 k miles.

well i guess according to the manual ur right but then again according to the manual service should be done by the dealer or a buell certified tech. have you read some of the post comin from other people on here with the horror stories from dealers. esp on buell cuz half the freakin time the only guy there who is buell certified is off so an hd guy works on your bike and god knows all the dealer is tryin to do is make $ off you. my advice and take it for what u think its worth is get the valve adj done at 1st service and only go to dealer for warranty repairs and recalls. find yourself a good mechanic who knows what hes doin with sportbike engines, if your lucky he'll have experience on ducati and mv augusta or aprillia so he'll know the engine

OMG please don't tell me that someone confused 1,000 kilometers and 1,000 miles. The first oil change is the only one that shouldn't be delayed.

did my first oil change at 150 miles, then 620,then 3000 and then every 3000. document your services by saving receipts and you should not have warranty problems. if you have a mechanic that you trust, use him. i trust me! good luck stirring the sh1t. see you at the track.

Gman5700, why would a mechanic "know the engine" if he's worked on Ducati, MV Augusta, or Aprillia? You know that the Helicon engine is only used in the 1125R and CR, right? The Spyders have a Rotax engine, so if a mechanic is familiar with Spyders, he should be able to work on my bike? lol. Don't inspect the valves until 12.4 k miles. Unless you like wasting money and/or time.

Gman - I am not attacking you, but that is the DUMBEST thing I've ever heard of.

There are plenty of good shops around, find one because there WILL be things you can't or don't want to do yourself.

I have done my services myself, 620, 6.2k, 12.4 k and 18.6 k... all MILES not Klicks.
Rotating the engine is scary at first, but not a huge deal.

I'm doing my own services and keeping good records because I'm poor and I want to know my Loretta inside and out.

Gman, there are some good dealers out there, and a good bit of it is developing a relationship with the people in service.

I've got a great dealer. Corpus Christi Harley Buell.
