I don't know what the fuss is about, I don't think it makes the bike all that loud, but then again, I am originally from Brooklyn, NY and lived three blocks from the elevated F train which rumbled by every 7 minutes.

I recently moved to a very quiet, residential neighborhood and starting the 1125R at 5:30AM might have disturbed a few folk (I think passing gas might be too loud for some of the "friendly" residents here). No one has approached me directly, but my wife has gotten a few "comments" from otherwise nice neighbors.

To be perfectly honest, the bike now sounds like it should, runs like a scalded cat and gives me ear-to-ear grins every time I nail it on an on-ramp. On the other hand, I could see the local constabulary showing up at someone's "anonymous" tip about disturbing the peace and I'm too old for that crap.

So, I am in a quandry - do I sell it or keep it until that fateful day my daughter sees me dragged off in handcuffs for offending the delicate senses of the pansy and crumpet crowd?

I would vote to keep it and wait until someone actually does something...

BUT - if you decide to sell, let me know. I'm on the waiting list right now for one from Kevin but would love to have one before I leave for my trip on Friday morning : )

I've gotten a few remarks about my race can on the bolt. There is neighborhood that was built about two years ago. Every time something is said about waking them up earlier in the morning, I comment about their kids raising hell at two in the morning. I could give a rat's ass.

Dont conform to the masses, (you bought a Buell for that reason). Most noise ordinances are from 10pm to around 5-6 AM and thats provided it's a constant disturbing noise (loud parties, reving the piss out of the bike for 30 minutes ...) If youre happy with the bike I wouldnt change a thing. Now go buy some headers and a free flowing exhaust for your cars and see what happens.

I just moved into a house on a really quiet street and was concerned about motorcycle noise, but I've already found out of 3 neighbors that ride, two of them on HDs and one on a pipes GSXR or something, so I'm not worried about noise. I have no need to have any bike running at 5:30am, so I'm not too concerned about it.

We're in a residential area and if I'm leaving early, I'll let it idle with the tailpipe pointed back to the open garage while I gear up. Then, I pull out, short-shift.

3 months so far, neighbors STILL friendly including 85 year old Wilma across the street (I've asked her directly - in the interest of being courteous)

If you like the house and neighborhood (and neighbors), dump the exhaust. It's not worth the hassle.

Nobody in my neighborhood has said a thing.
I had mine off yesterday to do some cleaning and touch up some bottom scuffs.

I ran it with just the mid-pipe for a while to cure the paint.

That way they heard what it COULD be.. : )

I LOVE the sound, still trying to get the idle speed down a bit.
She sounds absolutely EVIL at 1100 rpm.

I live in a densly packed community, and a couple of the guys have cruisers that literally shake the windows when they pull up. They are the ire of HOA as a result.

New York is starting to get strict about noisy motor vehicles, and even if you aren't violating a city noise ordinace, you might be violating the EPA, and they *can* nail you for that.

On top of it all, I think this is just something you do because it's *polite*. Most here probably live in the suburbs, or live in single family homes, so they can afford a bit of F-You attitude.

When you have 60+ families living in a half-acre of land, you need to put some effort into being at least slightly polite and getting along. If your neighbor is responsible enough to not leave the dog's steaming pile on the walk-up, you can help avoid waking them up at 5:30a.

Just my 2c. Go back to stock or run the bike only in the country.

Fire it up and short shift out of there pretty quick. Minimal intrusion. Maybe talk to the neighbors and see if you are actually irritating anybody....

May be just perceived. I'm not saying to wait till somebody bitches about it, but find out proactively if there is an issue.

Good luck!

I think the fact that his wife has already gotten a few "comments" is a good indicator that it's bothering some people and is an issue.

Maybe you can sell your car if they dont like that, or maybe change your mailbox or whatever outfit you happen to be wearing, hell I dont like the color of your house either so your going to have to change the color.

Or, and I'm just saying maybe, the wife doesn't like loud exhausts, or does and thinks that other people might not, and might, just might, and I'm just saying maybe, be projecting something on the neighbors. My first question would be "Who said What?"

Maybe.

Or maybe people can get the "don't conform to the masses" attitude, say screw you it's my bike and not respect your neighbors with a loud exhaust (not talking about you Ccmdoc) and this can happen.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/art icles/2009/07/08/motorcyclists_revved_up_over_hub_ noise_rule/

I'm all for a nice sounding exhaust (not obnoxious), but I'm also for respecting my neighbors and considering their situation also. If it's just 1 neighbor, they may just have other issues. If it's more than 1 complaining then it's probably an issue to deal with.

I'm guessing Ccmdoc is a fine neighbor, but I've got one that isn't considerate of anybody else in the neighborhood and I know how that is. This past weekend he ground 2 stumps for 2 days (until 9:30 PM the first night). I don't care about somebody grinding stumps at reasonable hours but, rather than water the soil a little around the stump to keep the dust down, he created a huge dust storm that covered all the neighbors houses, decks and cars for 2 days. I saw 1 car pull away from a house with dirt blowing off as he drove.

I recently had to go have a talk with him about a alarm on his car that he didn't mind setting off at 5:18 AM everyday (waking my family) because he opened the door before pushing the remote button. I did let it go for the first 6 days hoping it would stop.

I used to leave for work early, and was renting a condo at the time. I kept the stock pipe on my FZ1 for that reason alone. I would get pissed off too if someone woke me up at 5:30am. Especially if I'd paid a bunch of money for a house in a quiet neighborhood. Nothing makes people hate motorcyclists more than excess noise.

We were renting a Condo in Breckenridge a few years ago for "THunder in the Rockies". After the first morning when Mark fired up his S1 with a Force exhaust (hey it was just warming up) we had notes and comments all over the place. It wasn't our fault it was covered parking!

Anyway, even at idle, a V-twin can produce (what some people think) noise that is unacceptable. We were only there a few days and we had a WTF attitude anyway, so we just laughed it off.

If you do decide to get rid of it there would be some riders (including myself) that might be interested.

Oh yeah if the Wife is getting a few comments, more are SURE to follow.

Later

Carbon,
You might be correct, but after 29 years together, even if that were true it would be good enough for me.

I am trying to be a good neighbor - and frankly my neighbors have been pleasant, nice and friendly to me. If nothing had been said to me (by anyone), I would have no concerns.

When I leave that early, I roll the bike to the street, start it, put on my helmet and gloves and roll away to minimize the amount of noise I generate in my "back yard". I have to be honest, there are no loud parties late into the evening (even though we live next to a house of teenagers on either side), no early morning leaf blowers or lawn mowers and people around here are pretty respectful of everyone else around.

How loud is it? Not as loud as my old Sportster with straight pipes. Not as loud as my old '69 Chevelle SS 396 with glasspaks. Louder than the Esprit V8TT with straight pipes after the cats. To me, not all that loud. At 5:30AM in the deathly silence of Westfield, NJ - loud as hell if you are close to it, not so loud (to me) if you are more than a few yards away.

Just an old school solution in one word if you want to keep the Drummer and somewhat please the neighbors, "SNUFFER" Its and old trick which was sold to have a quick method of quieting a loud pipe. It was merely a large washer inserted just in the end of the pipe to kill some noise. It could be turned to either open or closed (90 degrees) and had detents to keep it in place. It was fairly restrictive closed so I would not keep it in place very long.

If you could fabricate a little I would make it about 1/8" to 3/16" smaller then the pipe inside diameter and have a hole in the middle of about 1/2" or so to have sufficient flow of exhaust. I would hold it in place with two safety pins, one on each side for quick removal when you are a out of the neighborhood. It could be put in your pocket easily and put on and off the pipe in seconds.

I used this for this very same reason years ago and they DO work, just do not use them very long(maybe 10 minutes or so)and do not try and rev too high. Common sense must apply here but it is a workable solution to do both. When they are out(off) its back to normal and you can continue to "enjoy" your Drummer, a great muffler.

Number 1 I wouldn't sell it just because of the neighbors. I'd try something like Bob talked about. I ran a straight pipe on my Firebolt. Very awesome sound by the way. I used something similar to quiet mine down a little although I didn't remove it. My goal was to add some back pressure and in doing so it got quieter. I just made sure that I didn't idle long at the house and didn't get on it or rev it until out of the neighborhood.

ccmdoc, i've used a samson exhaust baffle fitted to the drummer for my 1125r, It has brought down the db's of the exhaust nicely. Has not seemed to hurt the power seat of the pants only seems to pull harder from 3000rpm than without the baffle. No baffle insert bike started pulling hard from around 4500 rpms just by seat of the pants.
