Speed, I put one on mine, too. More or less in the same way as pictured above, but anchored to the fairing assembly/frame instead of the windshield using a techmount. I also have the ZR-3 laser jammer on there. It works really well, but you need an elegant way to notify you without having to look at it. Go to www.legalspeeding.com, and buy a HARD system. Works great! Highly Recommended. | ||

Most radar detectors you can use a set of ear buds to hear the alerts. I have a headset from my St1300 intercom so I can hear my Zumo, MP3 player and, Passport. Some detectors, like the passport, can be a little of a pain to hear through both ear buds. If you have the issue let me know and I'll walk you through a fix or two. THe Hard system looks pretty good but I have 2 issues with it: 1) Cost ~$160. 2) Battery life. Just my $0.02. Neil S. | ||

The HARD system is still the best option, IMHO. Nothing else works as well. It's not very expensive compared to just a single ticket. I got a $350 ticket for 10 over in Dallas the other day -- at those prices it only takes one saves to pay for a whole system a couple of times over! A set of long life (225mah) batteries lasts "about one weekend" if you just leave the thing on, including overnight. You can buy long-life batteries at Radioshack for $7 for two, or you can buy a whole bulk pack for around 30 cents each from DigiKey. Getting the passport to work by itself through earbuds is easy enough, but becomes an enormous challenge to "mix" it with music, and will require some special doing, including probably an isolation transformer if this is the route yuo want to go. I've gone back to just wearing earplugs to ride myself (no music), and I like the visual alert best. Another option is something like the screamer, which makes an enormously racket you can hear over wind, etc. I still like the HARD the best, being wireless and all. | ||

i had one on mine... wired it to the accesory plug. worked well untill one day i couldnt watch it cuz of the glare... that one cost me big time~! i had it cupped to the windscreen. it was a cheap one from wal-mart. | ||

Jim, you are right that the HARD system is probably the best for a visual alert since it's right up in your line of sight. There are some other offerings that can be mounted on top of your windshield but if they aren't in your line of sight, you can miss an important alert. Mine is powered off a key controlled circuit. The dark windshield helps a lot with seeing the LEDs. Still you need the audio alert or the HARD set up to make sure you are aware of the alerts, right when they occur. | ||

More HARD advice: 1. You pretty much must use a dark tinted helmet shield, or the light won't be bright enough relatively to very bright sunline to really get your attention like it needs to. 2. You pretty much MUST NOT wear sunglasses, as this will block the light from the alert and it won't catch your attention like it needs to. 3. Keep an eye on your HARD at Radar Detector start up. If the init lights are flashing unevently or erratically with an uneven tempo, it's time to replace the batteries in the HARD. Tax revenues are down, ticket quotas are up, and fines are up, too. Right now, you almost can't be too careful. The police today are pretty much worthless in civil contributon to communities as they have become little more than tax collectors for politicans. I usually ride within 5mph of the posted speed limit. When I do exceed that, it's really clear, or I am following a "bird dog". I'm far from a Luddite, but I don't like radar detetectors. I have a much better chance of talking my way out of the situation without one. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Z | ||

On my back roads I don't have enough "bear-bait" but, I have more than enough "bears"! I stay b/t 5-10 over posted and have not been ticketed for that but there is an occasional foray into acceleration induced BLISS that could get me in REAL trouble if I didn't have warning of LEO's in the area! So to avoid those one-sided interactions, I rely on my common sense and a little warning from the Passport, ah yes!!!!!! Later all Neil S. | ||

Yep Zac is a smartass, so am I, darn now I've gone and said it. Zac is this part of our program?? Anyway, a little thicker skin is needed on the internet (IMHO) than other places. We try and answer questions and make comments, both directions and, keep it a little light. Back on topic, Lionel, did you have any issues using ear buds with your Passport? Escourt, for some reason made the audio circuit different than "normal" audio circuits and you only get one speaker to work. With a stereo-mono adapter or, an isolation cable you can get both speakers to work. It's something about a "floating ground"? Maybe our resident "smartass" and former ET (not the alien kind) can shed some light on this (I'm just an ME that can take/ follow instructions well). It's time for a road trip down to Lynchburg, TN and a lunchtime feast at "Miss Bobo's" (Google and you will find) and maybe a tour thru Jack Daniels (although it's a dry county so there will be NO indulging ;+} ). Neil, I think you're seeing the effect of the device choosing a headset or headphones. A set of headphones in stereo will only run one speaker in "headset" mode. You can trick it to run both speakers with a "Y", but then your music is in mono. Z | ||

Sorry I just had.a really bad day at work. The ear buds work but I must be getting old its freakin loud doesn't matter if I turn the volume down. I was thinking of looking into a HARD system. | ||

Zac: For the 1125rt application I used an "isolation cable" with a mini-transformer to get it to work correctly, in both ears and volume adjustment. I got it from Gary at http://www.electric-avenues.com/amplirider.html give him a shout and ask him about an isolation cable for the Passport 8500X50, much cheaper and no batteries required. I also have a Passport 8500 ,the best performance mod yet. It paid for itself several times in the first week(I use it in my work vehicle too). I use an earbud so I KNOW when it goes off and I've wired mine to the battery. I mounted mine on a flying carpet....... actually I made two alum strips attached to the fairing stay that act as shock absorbers. And my screen is painted and yes it still picks up signals just fine.   | ||

Neil , I don't trust the suction cups, especially on the painted screen. I made two squared off u- shaped aluminum brackets with industrial velcro holding the unit on. Works like a charm. | ||
