My bike has 8500 miles, 1500 miles on my second engine. I was on my way to an appointment and coming up on a single twist in the road...that I like to take too fast. Had the rpms up around 5k, pulled out of the corner and downshifted into 2nd to pull the front tire off the ground. When I shifted it sounded like a huge thud / crashing noise coming from the gears, my rear tire locked for a split second before the belt snapped and all kinds of mechanical grinding was coming from the gearbox. It sounds like there are pieces bouncing around in it. Dropped it off at the dealership the same day... Any ideas? I know the belt isn't warrantied but the gears should be...could that have broke my belt?

the pin that connects the piston to the connecting rod loosened up. From what I understand it is supposed to be pressure set. Since it was moving it allowed the connecting rod, pin, and piston to all rattle around and pretty much ruined that half of the motor.

Woah... that's freaky. How fast were you going when downshifting to second? Would you characterize your riding style as a) sedate, b) aggressive or c) lacking restraint? ; )

Good luck with Engine #3!

Nw3b3r,
No mention of a clutch. Where you using it?

Bizarre, since nobody else has reported such bombing including the folks on the track. 5K in 3rd is what, about 55-60 MPH? That's not even redline for first (though close).

LOL...I just wonder why such misfortune for one rider and not everyone else. 2nd engine, so it can't be a lemon thing. Gotta be something that's either a complete fluke, or something the pilot is doing.

Love the mushroom graphic though...

yea clutch was used, the heavy clunk / thud noise came when 2nd gear was engaged. I was midway through 3rd gear's rev range so probably 50-60ish ??

btw I would say my riding style is c) lacking restraint with lack of self control

Hey just a thought but it may not be as bad as it sounds. If I put the bike up on a rear stand and run the engine in gear the tranny makes all kinds of clunky noises. With no road resistance the tranny sounds like there are loose parts in there. My Suzuki SV1000 does the same thing. Maybe it's just a broken belt? Please update us when you find out the extent of the damage. I have seen modern motorcycle trannys slip between gears but I haven't heard of one locking up like that.

Cool, first time I tried to watch that, it didn't work.
Just spent a minute or two clicking the tail end, over and over.

Destruction... destruction... : )

That Ferrari's engine blew because it had been installed in the wrong end of the car...

Doesn't look like an engine blow. It wasn't really revving at that point to be blowing out that hard. That thing was almost down to idle.

Who is the idiot that mounted the airbag under the hood?
