I have Geico insurance am am thrilled with the great coverage and great prices.

Also thrilled that I no longer have 9 bikes to insure or pay personal property taxes on.

I liked the way it looked. I think a race replica for a "privateer" team would be a little goofy.

It'd be like having a "Joe's Plumbing" race replica bike.

I think a greater choice in plastics would be good.

I'm thrilled to see GEICO as a sponsor . . they have been, for the last couple years, the hottest ad campaigns out there.

In addition, as much as I hated the "pod incident" it got Buell TONS of prime time coverage.

A friend of mine used to sponsor an Indy 500 car and all he cared about was "coverage". Every race he got a report showing "prime" (car was MOST the picture) and "secondary" (car was IN the picture) coverage.

Love it or hate it . . .after the Buell dealt out the time trials spanking, got noticed by Mr. Bostrom and spent a couple laps leading the race, the "pod incident" was GREAT coverage. Try to find anyone who saw the race who can't tell you EXACTLY what happened with "the Buell". Then, ask them how many Suzuki's finished in the top 10.

I was a Gieco fan until I wrecked on the track with my track bike (not insured by them) and broke my hip. The people at the hospital riffled through my wallet to find my insurance card and initially submitted my claims to Gieco (who had my street bike insured) when they should have submitted the claims to blue cross. Got that straightened out in short order and I explained to the Geico rep what had happened, that they were not liable in any way for this off-road incident. They sent me a form and I signed it and thought that was the end of it.

Anyway, when it came time to renew my policy for the street bike, they jacked up my premium about triple. I called and asked why the increase, they said it was because I had the 'accident'. I explained it all again and they could care less if it was a racing accident - they would not budge. Needless to say I went elsewhere.

So if you go to the track and get hurt make sure you don't carry your auto or street insurance cards to the hospital with you.

"Can I get mine with Duct Tape? "

That is some funny $h*t ... but at the same time that burns. While Buell got some publicity out of the fiasco ... I'm not sure that it changed the minds of anyone who has the perception that Buells are unreliable. The whole thing really got to me, I really thought Eslick was going to win. My wife came home while I was watching the race and asked "why are you cussing at the TV?"

>>>I'm not sure that it changed the minds of anyone who has the perception that Buells are unreliable.

I feel the same way you do but advertising seldom "changes" perception, it creates it.

If, say for instance, you neighbor was just SURE that Buells were unreliable, would he/she be more apt to say "but one Buell had to come in and have a part repaired" or "WOW. . .every Buell that started a grueling 200 mile race finished"

No, advertising is more likely (and this is why Buell ads appear where you would least expect them) to catch the eye of the person who has never heard of Buell . . they get curious . . wander, in a web search, on to Badweb . . and GOTCHA!

Court, I think the whole loose pod and tape incident wasn't a positive thing. A loose screw, broken tab, what have you, started the collapse of a good start. Now, someone who hadn't heard of Buell is probably aware now. The nascar fan that may have watched. Whether or not they take your positive viewpoints will remain to be seen.

That's racin'. Sometimes shit happens and you do better or worse than expected. Racing is the most unpredictable of sports.

And Court is right, Geico has to love that long pit stop with the Geico name right there for minuets. Heck even Buell got minutes of extra coverage. Somebody in Hollywood said it long ago "any publicity is good publilcity".

Some bodywork ripping loose should have no impact on whether the bike is reliable or not. As Court stated, ALL 6 bikes finished the race--even after at least one took a nasty spill.

Now if the bodywork comes apart again in Fontana, that's a whole different story.

So have we heard yet if it was loose screws or if just plain broke off?

Everything is an opportunity. If I was in marketing for BMC, there would ALREADY be on their website Buell Racing Duct Tape. With little blue ovals with the logo alternating with little Pegasuses. (Pegasi?) For about Fifteen or Twenty Bucks a roll.

No $hit, I'd buy that!

I've seen but ONE Indianapolis 500 race in my life . . . you know the ONLY thing I remember about that race?

quote:

In the 200 mile race (500 miles) at The Brickyard, Car #40 lead 171 laps. On the 197th lap, it suffered a gear box failure ($6.00 part) and eventually finished sixth. What might have been the impact on automobiles had the gas turbine-driven car actually won the race

I'm ticked it happened at the Daytona 200, but thrilled for Buell Racing. I predict great things this year . . . you simply can't get this good a motorcycle and this talented a group of riders in the same place without some fun!

I watched Parnelli Jones (USAC 98) drive Andy Granatelli's turbine car. Memorial day was rained out - the re-start IIRC was a couple days later when that part busted.

We had to go to the Long Beach Sports Arena to watch it on closed circuit TV. Cost Dad an arm and a leg.

(I was Parnelli's #1 fan since watching him at Ascot Park)

>>>the re-start IIRC was a couple days later when that part busted.

The race was on Monday, the restart was the next day on Tuesday, May 31, 1967. My Dad was working as a Lineman, out of town all week, and paid the princely sum to take me on Monday at the Topeka Civic Auditorium.

Dad has to leave late Monday night to head back to the job but made arrangements of me and a neighbor kid to be dropped off and watch the race.

quote:

This unexpected 2 day event began with gray skies but the race was underway as Parnelli Jones (the 6th qualifer in the race) is in first place before half a lap, with Gurney second and A.J. Foyt in third. Parnelli leads all 18 laps before rain halts the race. The next day is sunny, and the race resumes with Jones leading most of the race.

This was the first Indianapolis 500 to be televised in color by ABC during ABC's Wide World of Sports.
Andy Granatelli, the CEO of STP, introduced the first turbine-powered car into the Indianapolis 500.

Years from now . . . the 20 year olds here will recall the 1125R's first outting and the duct tape incident.

: ) . . I'd buy a roll of that BUELL DUCT TAPE in a heart beat.

Well, that could be a race team revenue maker. The Factory Tape Team. Show your stuck on Buell Racing by having it stuck on you.

Even get Geico in on it with the addition of the gecko leaning against the Buell Racing logo.

What I took from the whole race is basically two thoughts. As a cycle and Buell guy I thought the race made a very positive impact as far as being recognized and showing what Buell can do and what they're all about. The pod incident, I chalk that up to, stuff happens, no big deal. Love that duct tape.

The second thought deals with someone watching that had never heard of Buell. I think it may create the effect of curiosity. Armchair guy/gal watched the race and hears "bla bla yada Buell this and that" and says, "what's a Buell?" Afterwards they see the finishing lineup and see Buell has finished pretty darn good taking from 5th down. I believe that it will be a positive learning experience when they learn that the Buells they heard about and saw among the SuzYamApriliaetc, are from an American cycle company.

I think it was Court that mentioned coverage. I think the coverage was more positive than negative and that this was kind of like a second coming for the Buell brand as a whole. The first impact was made when Buell first started and folks learned of an american sportbike. To me, the race made the statement, "Look at me dammit, I'm here, I'm American, I'm better than good and I'm here to stay".

There are many ways to think and opinions about the race. Opinions are like certain body anatomy. Overall on the ol' meter I'd say it points more toward the positive than negative.

Just my .02, thanks for reading.

I want a picture of the Gecko duct taped to the side of the pod!

Hey . . . we had a screw up. Learn from it, take away the lesson, the laughter, learn and move on.

I am eagerly looking forward to great things from these Buell racers this year!
