I'm a cheap SOB and I ride a rear tire till the threads/wires show.

Or do you replace it when the tread gets to the wear bars?

Maybe an explanation to wildly different tire mileage?

I prefer piece of mind and safety first. When my tires, vehicle or bike are at the wear bar I'll change them. Of course I'll take a little more chance on four wheels as I would two.

The less rubber that meets the road means more chance of something small possibly penetrating the tire.

And riding on bald tires in the rain is not fun. Just my take,and I don't like to waste money either.

I was the same way until I had the tire guy toss me the old one after a tire change. I put my finger inside the tire at the thin point and pushed. It was really thin to the touch and the threads were just barely starting to show. These ain't like car tires. I can't think of a single scenario on a MC where a sudden pressure loss would not be a bad day.

Well, Technically, according to the manual:

Inspection

Tread wear indicator bars will appear on tire tread surfaces when 1/16 in. 1.6 mm or less of tire tread remains. Always replace tires before the tread wear indicator bars appear on the surface of the tire.
See Tread Wear Indicator: Pirelli Diablo Corsa III. The location of tread wear indicator bars are identified by 'TWI' markings on the tire sidewalls.

When To Replace Tires

New tires are needed if any of the following conditions exist:

1.Tread wear indicator bars become visible on the tread surfaces.
2.Tire cords or fabric become visible through cracked sidewalls, snags, or deep cuts.
3.A bump, bulge, or split in the tire.
4.Puncture, cut or other damage to the tire that cannot be repaired.

I use the wear bars as a guide.

However, if the tire is getting unwieldy and returning a poor rider experience, I'll replace it.

What I mean by that is a squared off tire (from predominately highway miles) when leaning over gives that uncomfortable feeling of resisting lean until it suddenly tips the bike in.

Riding aggressively, my front tire tends to take on the shape of a wedge. Tread left in the center, but flat surfaces on the sides. This results in the tire finding any groove in the pavement surface. Tipping in easily enough in a curve, but resisting full lean.

So yeah, I go by handling characteristics first, then wear bars.

What kind of mileage has everyone been getting with the Pirelli Corsa III? I used to get about 3 k on the rear Dunlop on my XB. Should I expect the same from the Corsa on the 1125?

I thought the cords were the wear bars....

Seriously, I run em till I can see the cords, but have a new tire sitting there ready to go to minimize downtime.

YMMV, do what you feel comfortable with.

That probably does explain the wild variation in the reported miles!

I think I got somewhere around ~4300 out of the first rear (Corsa III).

Switched to the Diablo Rosso, and am a little over 3,700 on this tire. About 50% tread left, so I'm pleased with the result.

Z, now stop teasing everyone. Yep, by the time you get past the wear bars, there ain't much material left to hold you up.

Why take a chance like that?

The difference in mileage is due to your type of riding and and how much you use your right hand.

I got the tire warranty through harley so when I see it wearing down I might accidently run over a nail and get a new one.

I always replace them when either the rear tire slides too much or the front starts to slide.
