"One of the checks I'll be looking at is parabolic sunlight focus on all three of the screens."

Mate! I can't position myself to actually see through ANY portion of the factory windscreen, even laid out flat on the tank; so my expectation of the taller Zero is that of a windlip that I want to see through; the rest of the screen is a windblocker and I reckon could be opaque for all the benefit it is to vision.

Some of the problems that can result from additional bends of a taller screen are what's commonly called "dash branding". It's when those new bends can focus sunlight and melt plastic bits and pieces or just deform them.

You are right, it's pretty hard to really see out of the windshield.

Update: 1/20/09, I tried to order an SR (stock replacement)windscreen this morning from ZG and was told that they are still in R&D for all models. I imagine just for final fitment as Glen there has stated. Order taker said to call back in three to four weeks. I thought they were ready to ship but I guess not. Weather here is still kind of iffy anyways so I'll just be patient.

I mounted each of the screens up this past weekend, some photos below. The stock size screen from ZG is about an inch taller than the OEM screen.

I took each screen, NOT mounted, and tried to focus a spot on the ground by changing the angle to the sun. I did the same with a ZG Firebolt Double Bubble screen. I was not able to get a tightly focused dot of light as tight with any of the 1125 screens as I could with a Firebolt DB screen. And what little focus I could get was WAY up near the tip of the screen, no where near the instrument cluster. It was hardly a scientific method, I just kept rotating and translating the screen trying to focus a dot, and wasn't able to get a tight dot of light no matter how I rotated it. Which is not to say there wasn't any convergent reflections, there definitely was. Just not a tightly focused single dot.

I'm pretty sure Glen at ZG was just waiting for me to do the installations I did this past weekend prior to releasing the product. They hadn't fit PRODUCTION parts to a bike yet. While my bike has our CF fairing on it, the fit of the stock screen on the stock fairing and the CF fairing is identical, so I have zero concern with things like hole alignment and such. They fit well.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. IMHO, the ZeroG stock size screen looks the best of all, better than either the OEM screen or the ZG double bubble. But the DB isn't bad either. The ST screen is a bit over the top, and I think there is going to be a price premium on the ST screen because it's size apparently means that only one screen can come out of each acrylic blank. I haven't gotten a confirm on the final pricing on that one yet. You're REALLY going to want max wind protection to run that one.
For me, give me a Dark Smoke standard sized one.

Here's a few shots that illustrate the height difference between the stock and ZG normal screen.

Great pictures Al and thanks for all your work with ZG to help get our screens to us. Will your prices be the same as ZG's? We all might as well get them from you and support one of the best BadWeb sponsors.

As far as sun focusing, it would seem that the dark smoke in particular would diminish considerably ANY sun getting through the screen to the dash.

My prices will be the same as Zero-G's, and I'll have them up on the web site hopefully later today. I'm not 100% sure that the prices that zero-G is showing for the ST screen is correct based on what Glen told me, though.

From the focus tests that I did, the dark smoke is the worst in terms of potential melting issues. This is because the issue with parabolic focusing is due to reflections from the underside with a low sun in the sky, directly from the rear of the bike. It isn't an issue with the light refracting THRU the screen, only reflecting OFF the screen. The darker the color, the less light that is transmitted through, and more light that is reflected off. But the dark also absorbs more light as well, so it's probably close to a wash. But in any case, I don't think it is an issue at all on the 1125R, I think the only real issue is with the Firebolt Double Bubble screen.

You know what would be more instructive would be a head-on view with a rider in 2 positions: "Touring" position - and then "Tucked"

It'd be pretty instructive for folks making a decision.

Thanks for the clarification Al. Seems correct as in the black backing on a mirror. For my purpose it will be fine, i.e. shading the instrument from sunlight from the front, and I believe of not too much consequence from the rear as my body pretty much shades the cluster. Angling in from the rear I believe would change the focus point also.

I hope most people will buy from you. I'll be checking your website soon. Bob

Very informative. My order with the Oz vendor for a blue double-bubble still stands; I'm happy with the looks of the screen, and would've bought it even if I weren't: I need the wind protection.

Would be happiest if Zero would adopt the technology to thermoform the screens from polycarbonate (I know, it's a bitch to work with) vs acrylic. The latter is very easy to scratch in everyday use.

Thanx

1. The zero gravity stock height is slightly taller than OEM, and 2. OEM is not available in a DARK smoke. Thats just me, you can also do what others have done and just spray this inside with a gloss black and spend even less $$$.

Al, how bad is "the worst?" I live in So Cal --- sometimes up to 110F in the summer --- and I REALLY like this product (especially in dark smoke) but not enough to trash my instrument cluster. Is it safe, or do I need to cool my jets? I can't even bring myself to ask with a straight face whether the manufacturer will warrant the product against damage to the bike, so can we maybe informally quantify the risk? At what point (temperature/time/whatever) DOES dash branding become possible or likely?

You are lucky living in OH since I have heard that the LEO's in CA don't like red windshields on M/C.

ZeroG will not warranty any damage to the bike due to convergent reflections.
That said, I don't think there is any issue with the 1125R screens in this regard. The focus wasn't there like on a DB firebolt screen. And regardless, it's only an issue with the sun straight from behind the bike, with no one on the bike. If you dont park it with the sun coming straight from behind, it'll never be a problem, even on a firebolt.

I can't quantify any of it. I tried taking pictures of the light focus, but wasn't able to really capture it well. But I'm pretty sure that there is NOT focus on the instrument cluster at all, whatever focus there was was well forward of the cluster.

A correction on an earlier post..the ST screen will be the same price as a double bubble. The screen that would have a lower yield was one that Glen was thinking about making, not the existing ST screen.

Yea, Cali doesn't like AFTERMARKET red screens. Strangely enough, OEM red screens are legal.

IMHO you get the wind deflection and quiet zone benefits w/o any real changes in looks. If mine was clear, 99.9% of the people would never notice mine was not stock. The people that did notice, only noticed that the color was different.

So if you are looking for some additional wind deflection, this will help.
