Just got this from Glenn cook at Zero Gravity; "Thanks for writing. Yes we got a bike finally. The prototypes are finished and we're working on production tooling. Should be pretty quick from this point on. I've attached a couple of photos........the second one is the double bubble with the stock screen ghosted behind it. Let me know what you think."

Picture posted below.

I like it and maybe it will keep some additional air off of your helmet/upper body. Here is Glenn's e-mail address "glenn@zerogravity-racing.com" Lets let him know what we think. Bob

Not crazy about it....I really like the shape of the stocker....just wish the smoke was a bit darker.

We already have a fairing that borders on being too wide, now you want to add that much height to it? Maybe it looks better in person.

I like the increased wind protection but the point of the bubble doesn't seem to blend as smoothly as some of their other screens. It looks "added on". Or it could just be the picture.

If that is a light smoke I would definitely go for the dark. I was originally interested in the double bubble, but I'd also like to see the sport touring screen as well if they make one.

Does ZG do any kind of wind testing or is strictly based on looks alone?

Me too. I'm thinkin now that I have the kick ash one maybe I'll take the clear one to a window tint shop and have them tint it darker. I'll let you know how it goes when I get around to it.

There is that VHT dark smoke tint that might work on the stock clear shield. I just never got around to doing it as the VHT is hard to find.

That would work too, Summit Racing sells it. Smoke usually has a brownish color to it, where you can get film tint in more of a charcoal color that I think would look better.

Doesn't zero gravity usually offer a dark smoke and also offer a windscreen that has the exact dimensions as the stocker? If so, I would like to see what that looks like.

Jason(helicon), me too. I prefer the dark smoke that ZG has always offered and yes, they usually offer a stock replacment. Guess we'll have to see if they do those also as well as the sport touring as Palerider asked about. I had the dark smoke on my M2 full fairing and really liked it. I'll be checking their website from time to time. Bob

I was talking to Glenn he also said....."We have a stock replacement (SR Series) and Sport Touring completed also. I've attached a photo comparing the SR, Double Bubble and Sport Touring. By the way, our Stock Replacement is slightly taller than the stock screen. As you can see, the Double Bubble and Sport Touring are about the same height. The Sport Touring is a little wider. Yes, it will be available in Dark Smoke. It's very dark but you can still see through it. The screens won't be ready for 2-3 weeks."

I would be interested in some full side shots. The front is so high from the factory does it really need to go higher?

Hey guys,

I have another (somewhat) related question that goes along with windscreens......

Does anybody happen to know how differing amounts of tinting affects a radar/laser detector when mounted directly behind the windscreen?

I bought a "Kick-Ash" windscreen with the intent to swap out the clear one, and still run my radar detector as well. I thought the light smoke tinting would still allow both laser and radar signals through without a hitch.

Shortly after I bought it, one of my co-workers suggested that I wasted my money on one or the other! He basically told me (although he didn't quantify or qualify his thoughts on this) that you can't use a tinted windscreen as it will block signals. I thought it could (potentially) minimize a portion of LASER signals, but not RADAR signals. Also, he said the darker the tint, the worse it supposedly gets??? It sounds like a somewhat valid point as the screen gets too dark, but then again, how much is too much?

I would have thought that a light smoke windscreen wouldn't affect the detector that much either way. It would stand to reason that a solid black screen would block laser signal, but again, not sure if the plastic itself blocks radar signal.

Thanx in advance for any wisdom on this.

Tracy

Laser will be reduced. FWIW, if you are shot with Laser, you are caught.

Should not make any difference with normal radar.

The laser is in the infrared (not sure what wavelength) Not the same as the light you see. Our perception of "tint" is limited to the visible wavelengths. The windscreen could be totally transparent to it, even with a dark tint. Look at the little window on your tv's remote...darkly tinted, yes? Also quite transparent to IR. And yes, by the time you've detected it, you're probably toast anyway.

Hey Neil & Jason,

Thanx for both of your responses!

So, if I understood your positions correctly, it seems you're both saying it really won't make a heck of a lot of difference to the detector (either radar or laser side) if I swap out to the light smoke tinted windscreen? I followed your points, except I'm still not certain how much it would actually cut down or diminish the signal (if any) in terms of "lead time" to either type of gun. Obviously, it would defeat the purpose of using the detector and that's why I'm asking all these dumb questions.

I do hear you both on getting "hit" by the laser gun! I assume you both meant "once your hit by laser" UNLESS there's any other "tricks" up my sleeve.

Oh well, gotta jam for now......

See ya later and ride safe.

The tint will not change your lead time. Using a radar detector is a matter of having "bear bait". If you don't have someone out in front of you to get the LEO to turn on his radar before he gets to you, there will not be the lead time so you can slow down.

The only exception is if the LEO has just left his radar on and he is around a corner or over a hill.

I call it someone "running interference" for me. It has kept me ticket-free for years (no detector needed).

Hey again gang,

I understand about the "bait" thing.

I guess you'd have to be somewhat of a moron to be flying down the road by yourself doing a 100+ mph (or whatever excessive speed) with no "buffer" or bait ahead to get a cop to let you know he's there. Certainly a lot of the success of using a detector is knowing how to interpret the type of signals, the strength of the signals, etc., as well as generally being aware of when it's safer to wick it up, and when NOT to!

I've had pretty good luck over the years, but then again, I try not to get too stupid with the throttle anyways. Sometimes I just like knowing where they're at even if I'm not going over the posted limit.

I went back and read the Escort 9500i manual again, and sure enough, it did have a short blip in there regarding not mounting the unit behind windshield wipers or "TINTED AREAS" of the windshield. (as it pertains to mounting in cars) Later on in the manual, there's another more defined statement about avoiding mounting it behind "HEAVILY TINTED" areas of the windshield. That becomes the killer question: how much is too much tint???

I'm going to assume that the light smoke windshield will be worthy of a try. I'll keep the clear one on for a while to check current performance, and then mount the tinted windscreen later and match up the results.

Should be interesting to see how much performance is cut down, if any.

Thanx again for the all of the good info.

Everyone ride safe,

Tracy

FWIW, tint used in car glass is completely different than tint in plastic. The only issue in plastic is in the metalized/ chrome, it will effect signals.

So tint in the ZG screens light or dark shuld make any difference.

Later.

Got ya Neil! Thanx for all the help.

By the way, I'm still LOVIN your R/T conversion. I've talked to several guys about possibly duplicating that project this winter. You did a terrific job on it! Something about "copying is the kindest form of flattery"......

Hey Tom, which part did you like the best???

Cheers
