Hey gang,

I'm embarrassed to admit my recent "brain-fart"!

As I finished gassing up at the local station yesterday, I started to pull away and left the damn kickstand down! STUPID! STUPID! It's been many years ago since that happened to me, and it was pretty embarrassing.

I didn't really roll too far, (maybe a few feet) and started to scrape a little bit and brought it to a quick stop. Anyway, it had occurred to me that it shouldn't have even begun to get that far out of hand!

Doesn't this bike have a kickstand safety switch tied to the neutral switch system???

It appears there's a spot for it where the kickstand folds up, but, there's NO wire and NO switch there! Just an empty threaded brass insert hole........

Can anybody comment on this without beating me up too bad for the stupid mistake? (and the stupid question for that matter)

Thanx a bunch, Tracy

Only the export models get it.
If we HAD gotten them, I'd send you mine.

The one on my Firebolt stranded me one day.
Until I ripped a piece out of a Budweiser can on the side of the road, and made a jumper.

That was a year or two back, think it's still jumpered...

Nope, there's no switch/ interlock. Someone did mention that many hours were spent in designing this stand so it would safely retract if it was left in the deployed position by the distracted rider.

Guess you didn't get to try it out. I had a fellow Engineer ride mine and forgot to retract the stand. 1st LH turn it scraped a little and then retracted w/o any harm to bike or rider.

Pariah:

Congrats you survived!!!! Many riders would have lost $'s by betting against you in your newbie condition.

I am VERY glad you proved us WRONG!

I looked into getting the sensor for the kickstand but it is more than a switch. It is a hall-effect sensor that sends a voltage back to the cluster. I don't know if the cluster is programmed for the sensor if its not there. The sensor was about $80 and still might now work without a different program. There are codes that relate to the sensor so this makes me think it would need to be programmed.

The question is why the export models got them, but the US model didn't. In fact, the instruction manual makes reference to the kickstand interlock but says that it's only on "certain models". I wonder if the Canadians got it?

The question is why the export models got them, but the US model didn't.

The bike doesn't have a safety switch because it doesn't need it. The stand will retract itself if you leave it down. Go out and try this, it's a neat feature.

I suspect the reason the European models DO have the switch, is that it is required by law, regardless of whether it is needed or not.

Not to mention how many COMPLAINTS on this board on previous Buell models that had a kickstand switch.

"You can't please all of the people all of the time."

I'm happy with how mine works without 1.

I hate those kick stand switches. Thankfully the US versions do not have it. It would be one more code I would have to learn to live with when I took it off. When you hear the stand scraping on the ground, you know it was not properly retracted.

Id rather not have the stupid switch, seen my friend on his CBR have enough problems with that.
I did once leave it down on my Firebolt 2 years ago when pulling out of work and to my surprise it went right up when it hit the pavement so the auto retract does work or at least it did on my firebolt.

I hate to admit how many times I have left it out over the last few years, at least 10. And that has included hitting speed bumps, riding over a curb, and going straight to a hard turn. It makes alarming noises, reminding me that I was distracted when I took off, and folds right up.

This was on an 05 XB9SX, which was designed to retract rather then need the safety switch.

The only way I would think it is a problem would be if you rolled backwards off a curb with the side stand down. I did exactly this with an old Yamaha and dumped it... so the side stand switch would probably not help you there anyway.

Hey gang,

Thanx again for all of your inputs!

No harm-no foul this time. I'm VERY glad to know that it doesn't become a "high-side" device if left down!

I was just very surprised that it didn't have a switch, especially in today's generation of bikes. It seems that most manufacturers choose to use that method to make their bikes people-proof! It sounds like the folding aspect has worked well for many of you.

I haven't had the feeling that this particular bike would fall over once the stand was down, but then, I'm very conscientious about pulling backward on it as I park it. Apparently, I'm not so conscientious about folding it back up when I'm supposed to!

Now my Hayabusa' another story.......

That one fell over on me due to what I believe was a poor stand design. It didn't deploy forward far enough to prevent that kind of thing from happening. Just looking at it in the down position was a dead give away. It was actually slightly less than 90 degrees to the bike. I took it off and filed the forward side of it (where it met the stop on the frame) just enough to keep plenty of metal there, but, also enough removed to let it angle farther forward and outward. It never happened again. It was the best (non-riding) 30 minutes I had spent on that bike!

I guess it's live, learn, try to ride safe.... Tracy
