Wilco, Helicon. I have also ordered a ceramic coated heat shield from Al Lighton. I will probably go with the coated headers also, but wanted to see the shield first. I will apply the tape when I install the shield. Jack | ||

Fellas, I put the "Cool Tape" on the inside of the frame closest to the rear header. I went for a ride tonight and (granted it was in the low 50's) there is no boiling fuel. I think this stuff helps. | ||

Hey Dtx! That's good news! I knew it'd work! Since you took some temperature readings before you taped up, could you take some new temperature readings? My only concern would be; how much heat actually gets reflected back to the head? thanks for posting! Dave | ||

Ccryder, I bring my steed in and keep her out of the elements. Especially for security and piece of mind so 4 people can't come by and walk away with my horse. Face locking the handle bars and using disk brake locks don't work that good if the bring a pick up and 3 buddies to pick up the bike and load it. After all she weighs less than 400 lbs. Yes, the fuel has not boiled since I put it on there. However, on these rides the temps were only in the 50's. We'll see how it does when it gets warmer out. | ||

I only took off two parts. The heat shield on the header pipe and the black plastic heat shield next to the oil dipstick. This gives you just enough room to get your hand back there to apply the Cool Tape. | ||

I painted my heatshield black and polished the inside because with the inside either black or the stock finish, it still got pretty hot. It still gets warm but I haven't burnt myself yet. Z | ||

Dtx, did you put the tape on both sides of the frame, or just the side shown? Also have you noticed along with the fuel no longer boiling, that the fuel smell has gone away? | ||

I wrapped it up the inside of the frame too. Well, as far as I could reach up there. There is probably about 1" on the bottom and 1" up the inside of the frame. Oh...and I haven't smelled the fuel either. Me thinks the two are correlated. No boil = No smell. (Message edited by dtx on April 03, 2008) | ||

hey all I got all the aluminum heat tape you want one of my accounts makes the stuff in like 5 different thicknesses they use it for oven doors and such do not buy it the stuff is screaming bucks email me and I will see if we can get a chain going from the first one and so on cause the stuff is heavy I got rolls from 20 to 1400 feet | ||

A cold front came thru yesterday and it's only 50 now. Loretta seems to be running smooth, not feeling or hearing any sputtering. Z | ||

Came home tonight, 770 miles on the bike and 60miles on a tank of gas (filled up 6 hours earlier), it's 66deg out and I'm mostly cruising at 65MPH before I get home. Park in the garage and close the door, 30min later the whole house smells like gas. No boiling, no leaks I can see. So do they just vent gas fumes at random? | ||

On warm days when the frame gets hot my is still stinkin' up a storm. I have to let it cool down outside after a ride. | ||

Still no fuel smell with the cool tape on there. However, it has not been real hot here yet. We'll see how well it prevents boiling when the temps get higher. I haven't even ridden the bike with temps above the 70's. Its been an unusually cool spring here in OK. | ||

I also had fuel boiling in the tank and strong fuel smell from vent hose. Just had fuel pressure code pop up and rear o2 sensor code set. Spent alot of time removing the rear headder pipe this weekend and insulating it. Check out my fiasco with buell and the dealer. There's something going on with different bikes acting differently. I've had mine since mid-December, 5950 miles on it. Cold(14˚) to hot (91˚), I've heard my fuel boil once, when I parked in the garage after my fuel light had been on for several miles. Fairly strong gas smell then, also. Some things you can do to mitigate this issue: 1) don't put it in the garage with a nearly empty tank after a ride, gas will boil. 2) Try to put some fresh, cold gas in, below the fill ring, right before you put her away. The cold gas will act like a heatsink. 3) don't overfill it, gas expands when it heats up and will push out the vent onto the muffler. Be very careful with this one if you have a California bike, the fuel will clog the carbon canister at the end of the vent line and pressurize the system. Other possible, unconfirmed remedies: 1) heat-tape the rear header pipe. 2) heat-reflective-tape on the engine side of the frame/tank. Do a Google search for "fuel boiling" and you'll get results for Ford tractors, KTM Adventures, Kawis, small airplanes, etc. Best of luck, welcome to BadWeB Zack | ||

50degf out, mine is still smelling. After parking it in the garage, I took a look at the fuel vent hose, swiped my finger across it, and got quite a dab of fresh fuel. I felt around the fuel/frame and it was definitely warm to the touch, not hot enough IMHO to boil fuel. I did not hear anything boiling either. I check the connection under the tank for the tank vent, everything seemed connected... | ||

Heard the fuel boil for the fist time tonight. Took it out for about 10 miles, quick spin. Air temp about 45 outside, 50 in the garage. Coolant up to about 185. When the fans kicked off I could hear it bubbling. This could surely affect the fuel economy in a negative way. | ||

I insulated my rear exhaust pipe and no more boiling gas. I tried to get pictures on this site but could not get it to work. If you want to see the pictures look on Motorcycle fourm under 1125R problem. |
