Anyone have this happen? Filled it up with 2.6qt as per the new instructions (with new filter).

I am not convinced that the capacity isn't 3 full quarts. When I put in 3 quarts with filter change it was dead in the middle of the good zone on the dipstick.

Just changed mine, did the 2.6 per the new update, it was at the add line. Put in a total of 2.8, reads full (using the correct oil level check procedure).

Have changed mine three times...with filter since new. At 3k miles.

Still dumping 3 quarts total/do the heat up/run thing/check level like we used to do...

Minimum reading on the stick, always. Go figure.

Have done stoppies at 10:00 O'clock/wheelies the same/never an oil light.

Again, go figure.

Got oil in there? : ) Life without knowledge and or a manual...

IS LIVING! : )

I just changed my oil and filter for the first time.
Put in 3 full quarts, and after warm up and such, doesn't even show on the dipstick. go figure.

Y'all are using the correct method to check the oil, yes?

Ride till engine is good and hot, then with the bike upright on level ground in neutral, idle for three minutes, then while still upright check after three minutes?

I too suspect that total capacity is closer to 3 quarts. I think the latest numbers are for oil change quantity, with consideration that about 0.3 quarts will remain in the bike. I don't know for sure though, just a hunch.

"Filled it up with 2.6qt as per the new instructions (with new filter)."

Then you may not be quite following the instructions. The instructions say the following:

\1. Ride motorcycle for approximately 10 minutes. Ride at least 5 miles (8 kilometers) to ensure the oil is hot and the engine is at normal operating temperature. Readings taken with colder oil could lead to an overfull engine condition.

2. Stand the motorcycle upright (not leaning on sidestand) on a firm level surface. An uneven surface will produce a false oil reading.

3. Idle the motorcycle for three minutes. Shut off the motorcycle.

4. See Figure 1. Loosen the dipstick.

5. Wait for 3-4 minutes after shutdown (with vehicle still upright) before reading the oil level, or false readings may result.

6. Unscrew and remove dipstick from oil filler hole. Wipe dipstick clean.

7. Insert dipstick into oil filler hole, screwing dipstick in completely.

8. See Figure 2. Unscrew and remove dipstick and note oil level. An indicated oil level between MIN and MAX (measured after performing steps 1 through 7) is acceptable for safe engine operation. Oil should be added in 3.4 fl. oz. (0.1 L) increments, depending on how far the level is from the MAX reading. Confirm oil level by repeating steps 1 through 8.

NOTE:

If the oil level is at (or above) the OVERFULL mark, drain oil at 6.8 fl. oz. (0.2 L) increments until the oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick. Repeat steps 1 though 8 to confirm proper level.

9. Hand tighten dipstick into oil filler hole.

I've changed my oil twice, putting in 2.6q with a filter change every time. If you don't do the hot check correctly, it will show as no oil every time.

This is not new to me, I have an Aprilia rsvr as well. Same deal for checking the oil.

Anyways, point is, 2.6q in my bike, and never see the oil light on, even while flogging it. Proper hot check shows the oil level in between min and max. I tried the cold check procedure in the manual.. It always reads low and off the stick, I don't think it is safe to go by that...

Blake, you are really condescending sometimes, especially for someone that doesn't even own a 1125r.

so Tsrf

I changed the oil on my 1125, filter and all, refilled with a full 3 quarts. I ran it till it got up to temp, and then rode for about 5 miles.
Let it idle in the driveway for a couple minutes, then rolled into garage and turned off, let it sit on side stand for a couple minutes. I then sat on the bike, holding it vertical, pulled the dipstick, wiped it clean, reinserted, threaded it in, waited 10 sec, then pulled it out again. NO OIL AT ALL on the dipstick. you are saying this is normal and OK??
I'm thinking it is still low.

Hi Cutty72

Make sure you keep the bike vertical for 3-4 minutes before you pull the stick...

If that still shows empty, I have no idea, it almost sounds like there are different size oil tanks, or dip sticks on these bikes...Very strange indeed.

It may well be normal. TSR and GSRon nailed it.

Wrong topic. The "Criticize Blake" thread is what you are looking for.

WARNING: Topic Drift

That was HILARIOUS reading, thanks for making me spew coffee out of my nostrils @ work!

BTW, didn't know it was a prerequisite to own an 1125R to post in the 1125R section? Did someone change the BadWeb Rules when I wasn't looking?

All joking aside, I'll choose to "listen" when Blake speaks on this board about Buell. For some strange reason, he seems to be able to confirm/correct/change information in relation to our bikes based on BMC information that is not readily available 2 the public on a very frequent basis.

Translation = Are you sure you want to get into a p!$$ing match with the golden goose in his own house? I'll take a pass on that, thanks.

On that note, I'm outta here 4 the weekend w/ my 1125R that still needs 300+ miles to complete the breakin w/ no troubles/issues found yet.

I'm bad enough about checking my oil but if it requires a to do list in a specific order with waiting periods I'm telling you, it aint gunna happen.

I hope they design a dipstick setup for easy fast cold checks on the side before I get one of these engines.

The cold check is easy, but if you add ANY oil you have to do the hot check.

Not run for at LEAST 4 hours.
Stand it up, wait 2 minutes and check.
Level will be a tick or 2 below the Hot Check level.

As with several quirks of the new motor, I am adjusting.
It ain't a Lump™.

Oh yeah, Thanks Blake.
P_squared only spewed coffee, I spewed beer last night.
You, sir, are contributing to alcohol abuse. : )

OK, i understand I'm not holding it upright for the 3 min like stated, but I figured after even a short time when the oil is hot it should at least show on the dipstick.

Will putting the bike on a rear stand only affect the level, as the rear will be higher than front? or do I need to sit and hold it for 3 min??

If you added 3 full quarts, didn't spill any, after dumping old oil, you should be close to the "overfull" mark if measured correctly.

It's an arcane PITA process, but you won't get a good Hot Check if you don't follow the directions to the letter.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

The point here is the oil light never shows, other than super hard braking. It lights for 4 seconds and disappears. 2.6l is 2.7q eh? I'm short .1q than.

well, did the full correct hot check, to the letter. oil was barely on the bottom of the dipstick.
