I just got my bike today (still at the dealer so they can fix some of the plastic that got scratched and a broken mirror from shipping). Anyways I started it up and was letting it idle for a few minutes in the shop and the idle jumped around alot. It wasnt stable at all. Was normal around 1.5k or whatever it is set at but then it would jump to 3k and drop back down. Did this quite a few times.

Just wondering if anyone else that has their bike also has this problem when the bike is warming up, or after its warm.

I know my 05 XB12R bounces around but thats from just under 1k to just over 1k so not much, not the 2k RPM's like the 1125 was jumping..

p.s. I got #315 here in Minneapolis, MN. No riding for me though in any near future its been snowing for about a week straight now. Should have it delivered next week after my new parts are fixed =)

Arillius13,
Mine used to jump around a lot early on, but the idle has gotten much steadier as time went on. As of now (almost 1000 miles) the idle is far steadier then that on the firebolt.
Best,
Peter

So far I've been lucky. About 400 miles. When cold, I get front brake "howl". It goes away, no big deal.

Lots of white smoke at cold startup (condensation I presume...)

No issue with the mirrors floping.

Notice the rear tail section/seat is crooked with respect to the rear wheel. I had this on my XB. Had to realign the seat frame, but it looks wierd.

Also, the battery NEG bolt makes it difficult to snap in the rear seat. Bike has been good so far.

Hi Anonymous I just got mine friday and the batterie light came on and put it on the charger when I got home and took along time to charge back up, so today I decided to ride up further in the rpms had no proublems but is on the charger for an hour now and is still charging, I am worried that when I use my heated gear I am going to have a proublem, could this be a bad voltage regulator, need to know soon to get this fixed thanks and can be contacted at baggermike@verizon.net thanks Mike

Mike,

It's to hard to diagnose with so little information. It is possible there is an issue, although the one that started this string is the only one we have heard of up to now. It's more likely that the battery just was low, as all of these should be left on a trickle charger when new to bring them up to a full charge. So, I am sorry to say I really can't give you a definitive answer. But again, the batteries will do much better if brought fully up to charge, and the break in riding at low rpm combined with a lot of starts and stops will make a low battery much more likely. You will need to go to your dealer if it doesn't settle down.

Ok but I had a full charge this morning and road all day at like 3000 to 4000 rpm and came home and hooked up the charger to it and it took four hours to bring back to green it is a small charger and this might be why it takes so long to recover, I am not a batterie or charging expert, just worried I am going to get stuck somewhere using my heated gear, my ulysses is fine for handling the gear, but it is now being fixed, the oil pump broke in october and I just got it back the first week of december, and they did not fix it right, it had loose screws and a screw cross threaded in the front exhaust chin fairing right were you could see it sticking out half way crooked, that was Manchester NH Buell and now the rear cyclender is leaking oil so when the new dealership dropped off the 1125R they took the ulysses, by the way the 1125R is awesome

Mike, I use a couple of Optimate batter tenders which typically trickle charge at around 2 amps.

It's common for my S1W to show low charge according to the lights on the Optimate, when I return from a ride. The battery in my case is fine, and fully charged. I think all that's happening is the Optimate just brings the battery right up to maximum capacity before it's able to recognise when to turn on the fully charged indicator light. But to get there from what is essentially a fully charged battery to start with, the chip inside the Optimate recognises the battery is fully charged, but to be sure it reverts to a trickle charge of around .2 amps. That's why it takes a while for it to indicate a fully charged battery.

Bagger, for peace of mind, you can get yourself a little volt meter. I think they are about $20 at Radio Shack. You can monitor your battery voltage, and that will tell you if the heated gear is draining your battery, and if your charging system is working.

Ooops brainfart.

You won't need a meter Mike, the 1125 has one built in.

Push the "mode" and "toggle" buttons, then turn on the key.
The display will say "Diagnostic Mode".
Use the buttons to toggle thru the tests.
One test is System Voltage.
You can do all the checks while it's off, then start it while in Diag. Mode and check everything while running.
While it's running in Volt Check, turn on your accessories and see if it's still above 12.6V.
Read the Owner's Manual for more cool stuff like Diagnostic Mode.
There's also a way for us Mortals to reset the Service Interval Mileage counter.

Good point Zac4mac. Guess we're not used to all the new fangled features.

Baggermike, I would thing if you rode it all day and it was starting fine, you don't have a problem. The battery was probably not fully charged when you got it from the dealer, and you took care of that by charging it with the trickle charger. Thanks to Rocket, you got some good input from someone else with the same type of charger.
Has the low battery light ever come on again?

Hi guys, and thanks, I did think about the first time the battery might have been low from storage, I also was riding with all the lights on, so I just got to figure things out, and time will tell, fist I will ride with just my gloves and jacket on and see how that is, it has to be really cold to need the pant liner and socks, last year I was out in 4 degrees on my bagger I sold which had the fairing but my legs froze this year I am prepared for anything and hope the bike is to, I do not own a car, I hate them, so this is my life, and this bike is awesome, going to race school in the spring and want to do track days so I do not use this power on the street, I already lost my wife in a accident and this is why I hate cars, now I am teaching my son to ride, I bought him a buell blast for his 18th birthday and been teaching him, we went for a first real ride on Christmas day, now he wants to ride everyday and wants a 1125R to, he lent me the money to buy the 1125R, I sold my bagger in june and bought a 06 ulysses, then I came to a fork in the road which was modify the ulysses for more power and suspension and brakes or buy the 1125R, the R won, now I am giving my son the ulysses when he is comfortable riding, he also wants me to customize it, he seen a picture of a ulysses with a firebolt front and a lightning rear so he wants me to do this for him, this is when I am most happy either riding or working on bikes, they are my life and now my son is finding out the same, and he as no interest in driving a car, but I tell him that he needs to get a car license to take girls out on dates. I wish everyone a happy and safe new years. Mike

Mike..... better yet, the bike will teach your son not to take any girls out for a date if they don't want to go on the bike!! Break them in, otherwise once they get control the bike will go!!! : )

Apples and oranges, I know, but I've just installed a Kuryakn LED voltmeter on my S2. Along with the dual heated clothing thermostat and the PIAA lights, it seemed like a good idea.

Anyhoo. If I run the PIAAs ( which is all the time) and the gloves, I get 14v all the time. Turn on the jacket and I get 13v (one green LED). Hit the high beam or the brakes (I have a flasher in addition to the incandescent bulbs; gotta get those LED tail bulbs!) and it drops to 12v. Or drop below 3k rpm with the jacket on, and I get 12v. I did check battery V thru my tender lead, with a VOM, and it read 12.06v after sitting in sub-freezing temps for 10 days. So I know I'm not *dis*charging, at least.

Now, I don't have a sexy ODIS system on my '95, LOL, but you should be able to get the same information out of the display that I'm getting from my Kuryakn thingy. Now I know I have to keep it in a lower gear on back roads to keep the volts up with the jacket on. Ride with the display showing a couple times, with full electrical load, and figure out what RPM you need to carry in order to feed all that stuff.

If the antiquated (and original stock!) charging system from my '95 can handle heated jacket, heated gloves, PIAA powersport lights and a brakelight flasher system all at once...I'm sure the 1125r can swing it!

+1 on verifying a full charge first though - the bikes were delayed, so I'm sure the batteries have shipped a bit more depleted than desired. And remember:

If you're gonna start it....ride it for at least 30 minutes. That goes for just about any motorcycle in my book.

OK I went for a long ride keeping the rpms over 3000 and my son rode his piece of shit buell blast, I tried on my heated gear and felt less heat than on my son ulysses, so I get home put his bike on the charger and 30 secs later it is flashing green, now after 3 hours it is still on red on my 1125 so need to talk to my dealer about charging rates of the different bikes, but the good thing it ran really good and love the bike. just did the numbers on compare a bike. the 1125 puts out 432 watts at 7000 rpm and it a 3 phase systemm, thy ulysses put out 405 watts at 3000 rpms and is single phase, the buell blast put out 297 watts and no other info so I would think that it just does not seem right and the 1125R should be better not worse, will need to talk to a tech about this. Happy new years guys. Mike

it is 2 in the morning and is still charging, been on the charger now since 8:30 pm, my sons buell blast which is old and bought it in november so I do not know how old the battery is but it only took 30 seconds for the charger to go to green, I think there has to be a problem and I can not stay up any longer to see when it goes to green maybe by the morning it will have, hopefully I can get an anser tomarow if my dealership is open. Do you spin it that fast on your rides?

Mike, it looks like you might have a bad battery.

You could try recovering it with the Optimate if that's what you have, but by the time it takes to do so, you'd be probably quicker just getting the dealer to jump in.

To recover using the Optimate you need to discharge the battery, then put it back on charge. The Optimate will use a computer controlled program in an effort to recover and fully charge, but if it doesn't, you might end up with a battery you can't recover once you've discharged it. Go to the dealer.

Charge the battery fully overnight, then start the bike up and measure the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine idling. If the terminal voltage is less than 14.0 volts you have a problem with your charging system. Or take it to the dealer and let them have a crack at it if you think they aren't a bunch of knuckledraggers.

Sorry if this has already been asked:

Did you check the voltage with the bike not running,
Then
Check the voltage at various rpm in your garage?

If Voltage goes up to 12.5-13.5 at various RPMs then the alternator is working, and the battery may not be taking/holding the charge.

Mike -

Put your key in the switch.
Press the Mode and Toggle buttons, then turn on the key.
Instead of scrolling "Buell Motorcycle..." across the display, it will say "Diagnostic mode", then "view codes".
Press "Toggle"until you see "system voltage".

That is your battery "at rest" should be above 12 V, more like 13.5 if charged.

Press the starter, get her running and look at the display.

This is your alternator charging the battery and the voltage should be 13.8-14.4 or thereabouts.
If the numbers don't change, you're not charging.

If you're outside these numbers, talk to your dealer about a fresh battery.
