When we were up at Laguna Seca, I spent a little time talking to Abe Ashkenazi about the design and he was making NO CLAIMS about the engine being a BUELL design - it was built to meet their requirements and Buell had VERY SPECIFIC requirements.

Funny, he didn't mention the oil filter... I think he was trying to suppress the information about the oil filter! I smell a COVERUP!

Erik, him self, stated that the oil filter was not a new design.

This thread is just "whistling past the graveyard". If only the 1125 had the handling, looks, long term reliability and racing pedigree of the Aprilia.....

Wishing for something, doesn't make it so.

I see MV Agusta is at least trying to compete in AMA Superbike. Whats up with Aprilia?

AMA Superbike currently allows 1000cc 4-cylinders to race. Mighty tough to compete with a twin of the same displacement. You need around 200 HP...good luck. World Superbike has just changed their rules to allow twins up to 1200cc - the Ducati rule. Aprilia is working on a 1000cc V4 for World Superbike in 2009. They started working on this bike before the rules change allowed 1200cc twins. They are reported to be making in the range of 185-220 HP. Aprilia is still competing in World GP - 250cc class, and it looks like they will win another championship with Lorenzo. Aprilia is also winning in the USA Suntrust Moto SST with a Tuono.

Diable, I would bet that the 1125 will out handle an Aprilla and that is more reliable.

Looks are subjective, the Italians are usually gorgeous but the 1125 is pretty nice also, can't say it is better looking than an Aprilla, I don't know that I have seen one of those in flesh anyways.

And Buell is certainly not going to match the racing record. That is going to take a lot more motorcycles sold before they can hoep to compete at that level.

The wishing comment is a bit mysterious as in I'm struggling to see the logic in the point of view that typed it.

Wait till the bike has been around a while, sure...but it obviously has merit as a Ducati, Aprilia competitor.

Okay . . . so folks are basing $12,000 purchase decisions on the pedigree of the oil filter.

Okay . . . you are one tough bunch.

: )

I bought a fairly pricey German made car last year and I'm all of a sudden wanting to run out in the garage and see who made the oil filter? If I find an FL1A on that babe. . . there'll be hell to pay!

And . . . where were all these folks while the 1st 100,000 Buells ran around with Sportster filters?

God bless the internet.

Aprilia is also winning in the USA Suntrust Moto SST with a Tuono.

Buell is also winning in the USA Suntrust Moto-ST GST with the XB12R.

Earlier posts have somehow concluded that a bike that isn't yet in production is superior to a bike that has been in production for 9 years. And this conclusion based on pre-production models with issues yet to be solved (incorrect fork springs, low rpm fuel mapping, toasted foot, and vibration). I have no doubt these problems will be fixed, and the 1125 will be a very good bike, but it's a little premature for folks to pronounce a winner.

True, it is early.

I'm not a spec sheet racer but you have to admit that the specs for the 1125R are at least enough to make the most hardened Buell hater raise an eyebrow in surprise.

I can also tell you from personal experience that the bike is very powerful and handles very well.

I can also say that I spoke to someone that has ridden nothing but Aprila for several years, and currently owns a Mille. He is a coach for Private Track Time and has had several chances to compare the 1125R to his Mille at the Inside Pass track days. He told me that he thought both the engine and the suspension of the 1125R were superior to the Mille.

I'd say that if the 1125R in its pre-production form is good enough to impress a die-hard Aprila fan, the production model should make even more of an impression.

Premature to pronounce a winner? Sure. It's also impossible to say definitively that it ISN'T a winner, or is somehow inferior to Aprila.
}

If only the 1125 had the handling, looks, long term reliability and racing pedigree of the Aprilia.....

1. Handling: You doubt the handling of the Buell? http://www.buell.com/en_us/news_events/inthenews.a sp
Read those articles.

2. Looks: I personally think the bike looks great in person. Somehow that doesn't translate in pictures. I really don't care anyway, I'm more concerned about function rather than form.

3. Long-term reliability: Again, I direct you to those articles.

4. Racing pedigree: Erik Buell has lived and breathed motorcycle racing for a good thirty years or more. There is a die-hard love of motorcycle racing at the heart of Buell. Just because none of their bikes are repli-racers doesn't mean much, except to those who are only concerned with spec sheets.

I also personally don't give a rip about where the stupid oil filter came from. Who cares? Blathering about stupid crap like that is nit-picking just for the sake of nit-picking.

heh... heh...

If you bought any VW 4 cylinder, or any Audi with the 1.8T motor, you'll find exactly that filter.

Ok, so it'll be the German OEM equivalent, but if you were to go buy a filter at Autozone, it'd be the same replacement filter for the FL1A.

Man this hurts . . . you guys sure know how to twist the knife.

I'm trying to get up the guts today to go pick up my BMW after the $1,534 12,000 mile (it only has 5000 but it hasn't been started since 2001) tune up.

I'm trying to figure out a way, with my own Buell in CO, to keep from riding the BMW to a Buell event. . . suppose I can disguise it???

: )

Hey Court -

Weather's not too bad here yet, if ya want, I'll take some time off and ride yours up to ya. Got some folks in Marlboro I'd like to see. I live in Longmont, getting the 1125 from Reed at Sun HD. He said to ask you about Weights in Motion or something.

Court:

I could say something but I'll bite my cheek (that's one reason many BMW riders have gone over to the ST IMHO).

As far as making it look like a Buell take a tip from those car guys and tape black irregular shapes all over it.

Holy crap this is a sad, sad thread!

All I can say for sure, is that in my opinion the Aprilia Tuono looks much better than the 1125R.

It'll be interesting to see how they compare in Moto-ST

Something about a long stretch of closed off highway, you and Erik and some others testing out a new bike and him getting in trouble for driving his work truck 70mph in reverse. Reed Holmes is selling Buells at Sun HD.

Technically the lawn chair in the bed was facing in the direction of travel so it was a misdemeanour, not a felony.

So, no more dirtbike and therefore no more dirty race program, perhaps said "planned funds" set toward a "Real" factory 1125R race team in superbike, WSB or AMA (both?) ?
