Bush Pitches Economy From a Harley

By DEB RIECHMANN
.c The Associated Press

YORK, Pa. (AP) - President Bush hopped on a Harley-Davidson at a motorcycle factory Wednesday as he made an election-year pitch for Republican stewardship of the economy.

The president also was in Pennsylvania to raise cash for a GOP hopeful in the state's gubernatorial campaign.

Cheers and applause erupted inside the Harley-Davidson Inc. vehicle operations plant here when Bush straddled a high-end model painted blue and white and revved its engine again and again. Climbing down, he ripped off blue-tinted safety glasses that he insisted made him look like rock star Bono and jokingly struck a pose intended to show a hip side.

``I'm just looking so far,'' Bush said during a tour of the plant where 3,200 employees work around the clock on shiny motorcycles that move slowly around the assembly floor on tracks. ``I'll let Josh Bolten ride these things,'' Bush said of his chief of staff, known as a motorcycle enthusiast.

After the tour, Bush held a round-table discussion with Harley-Davidson workers about the U.S. economy, which has showed recent signs of slowing. The president said he discussed with the workers the need for government to open up markets for U.S. products around the world.

``The more Harleys sold in a place like Vietnam or China or India, the more likely that somebody is going to be able to find work,'' Bush said.

An AP-Ipsos poll in early August showed about 37 percent supported Bush's handling of the economy. That matches his lowest level in May 2006 and November 2005, but not that different from the last few months.

The Labor Department on Wednesday reported that consumer inflation accelerated in July, reflecting a big jump in gasoline and other energy prices. In evidence that the economy is slowing, industrial output in July slipped to just half the June pace.

Later, Bush traveled to Lancaster to raise much-needed money for former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann, who is carrying GOP hopes for an upset over incumbent Gov. Ed Rendell, a Democrat. Swann trails Rendell in fundraising and the polls.

Swann, who was co-chair of the Bush-Cheney campaign's African-American steering committee in 2004, says he's not worried about Bush's lukewarm popularity. Bush was speaking at a fundraiser where donors will pay $10,000 for a private reception and photo opportunity with the president and $650 a person or $1,000 a couple for a general reception.

As of early June, Rendell had raised nearly $20 million - less than half of what he spent in his 2002 campaign and roughly four times the amount Swann has amassed.

``Swann needs President Bush to help win back those Republicans who are backing Rendell,'' said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of Quinnipiac University's polling institute. ``Also, the president can help raise the kind of money Swann needs to take on a well-financed Democratic incumbent.''

Associated Press Writer Martha Raffaele in Harrisburg, Pa., contributed to this report.

I met Chris and his wife, who are from England, were in the States touring on an XB12. They passed me headed up Molas Pass in SW Colorado last week while I was putting on the rain gear.
I came back out to ride this road from Ouray to Durango and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison which I missed last June due to a crash of one of our group. I think that these two roads may be the most scenic that I have ridden on (sorry Newfie, my memory may be short).
They said that they are headed to Mexico and then back to the States for a Buell ride in New Mexico I believe. They are members of Sport Twin so if anyone can add more info. I regret that we didn't get a chance to talk more.

I bought my XB12Scg 14 months ago, my second Buell. I just got a new owner survey from Buell, most of the questions were about the dealership, i.e., how was I treated, salesman, financing, etc, etc. Didn't have a place in there for buying it over the telephone and having it shipped here. Never have been to the dealership. The survey didn't ask many questions about the bike itself or about the piss poor support system for it. Why, I ask myself, does every magazine in the world give credit to all of the other makes, and Buell is rarely mentioned. If we are riding such great bikes, why are they not in the mags???? When they talk about looks, ride, engine, performance, handling, nakedness; it's always Suzuki, Ducati, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, and now even KTM beat Buell out. Am I missing something?

FINALLY,
After LONG last my bike is back in my garage where it belongs. It looks better than it ever did, all the waiting was worth it. Now I just have to baby the new motor along for the first 500 miles, man that's hard to do. She sounds hungry to go faster whenever I ride.
Thanks to everyone for their input, check out my profile, I am trying to upload a picture tonight.

Art,
here is a picture of the shifter installed on an S3. Hope this helps.
You might try contacting Banke, and have them email you a copy of the install instructions.

Howdy fellow Buellers,

Damn, I haven't been here in a loooong time. <grin> I'm curious if anyone trustworthy (meaning someone that’s been using the BBS for a while) lives somewhere close to Parkville MO, which is just North of downtown K.C. Maybe 8-9 miles and only approximately 10 miles from the airport. I need someone to check out a telescope for me and possibly purchase it for me. Of course I will PayPal the greenbacks to YOU directly. No telescope knowledge necessary. I will tell you what to look for.

Sincerely,

Smokedaddy, you'll have better luck posting on the Quick Board. This thread is pretty slow, but QB lives up to it's name. Responses come very quickly and I'm sure you'll have no problem getting the help you need there quickly.

Woo'hoo ... I killed (2) birds with (1) stone and they both fit inside my trailer. Had a 28 hour drive to boot. I was one tired little puppy dog too and had to teach school on Monday morning. <duh>

Beautiful, Jim.

And he can see Pam Andersons hooties from there...of course I believe they are on the list to be named as the new "twin" planets, now that Pluto has been de-moted.

Pammy said, " . . .they are on the list to be named as the new "twin" planets, now that Pluto has been de-moted."

They do seem to exert a strong gravitational pull upon a substantial part of the galaxy . . .on a level Pluto never seemed to be able to achieve.

YMMV, always consider the source . . .
