Brad,

"The geometry of the links means that if the engine drops, it pivots toward the link, rather than placing much vertical load upon that area of the engine case."

The geometry of the links? Not sure I understand what you're saying. The engine pivots at the swingarm. If the front mount is removed, the engine pivots from this point until something stops it. If that something is the front link, a large vertical and horizontal force will be applied to the mounting point at the case.

I'm not saying that is what caused Josh's case to crack, I'm just saying I don't understand your explanation.

Tankbags: RKA and Chase Harper both makes great stuff.

Chase Harper have unconditional lifetime warranty on all their stuff: It breaks - they fix it ... no matter what the cause.

I have their Eurosports tank bag (much too big), and the quality and features are top notch. I also have one of their tail trunks, which works well for longer trips. Lots of pockets, straps etc.

Djkaplan,

The Buell Uniplanar design is configured so that the engine is allowed to vibrate/float in the vertical plane. Both front links are in the vertical plane to allow this to happen, with the top floating on an isolator; this means that vertical movement is allowed, lateral movement is not. But you are correct, I was not allowing for the effects of the rear mounts, which limit the amount of float--as the front of the engine rises or falls, that area will be placed under some stress, but not so much as might cause this sort of damage in one occurrence. It's an interesting question.

On the other hand, the engine MUST have been supported somehow, else the installation of the upper isolator (top motor mount) would have been virtually impossible.

RKA makes great stuff, the tank bag I got from them is exactly what I need, with the added benefit, if this is of interest to you, of coming from a small shop where you can talk to the folks the run the joint . .. call it a corner store vs Walmart thing . . . . .not bad-rapping the other bag manufacturers, as it's hard to get a bad product from any of the above named companies, I just like to deal with a small shop when possible

The Buell brand tankbag for my S3T has served me well. Nice and big (expandable), good map pocket, external pockets, easy on and off, nice little carry handle. Rode with it on the bike to work today.

Brad,
"The opinion here is that the damage you've described and photo'd would probably not be the result of "improperly supporting the engine" during your upper isolator replacement. The geometry of the links means that if the engine drops, it pivots toward the link, rather than placing much vertical load upon that area of the engine case. More likely is the effect of lateral movement or tension, improper adjustment of the lower link placing the engine into a bind, or an accident...

I strongly disagree. With the front isolator removed, if the engine is allowed to drop, the front/lower tie bar will see a tremendous tensile load. You are asking a horizontally oriented tension rod to support a vertical load. That cannot happen, so the rod deflects somewhat as the engine drops and forces the tie-rod to carry a HUGE tensile load. See the figure below...

It's easy to overstress front tie-bar.
Lack of proper support subjects front tie bar to HUGE loads.

Josh,
I'd be happy to support your courtroom efforts as an expert witness. The engineering/structural analysis is pretty simple to demonstrate a preponderance of the evidence pointing to negligent shop practice.

I've been using it for years, on both my last two bikes. After is gets scuffed up and ratty, it's just a peel off and replace proposition. It'll amuse you what the saved paint and the exposed paint will look like upon comparision

Jim_witt,
The shopsmith 3 in 1 's can be decent for their capabilities. Prices are ok, you may find Japanese machines cheaper, but spare parts are an issue. 3 in 1's are a compromise, not as good as individual machines, but take up far less space, big disadvantages are 1] setup takes longer (the reason shops don't use them) 2] Rigidity is an issue, a light mill or lathe can't take as big a bite, or hold tolerances as well.
If you want to make small parts, you're ok, but you get a bit wobbly at the large end of the tools capacity. You also will spend about as much on tooling as on the machine. Quality taps, Dies & cutters add up fast.

For you non-engineers, (myself included,) imagine tying a weight to the middle of a rope, tying one end to a fixed point, and trying to lift the weight by pulling horizontally on the rope. This is what was happening to your tie-bars.

Just read Saro's post. He has a big point I forgot, a beginner may have issues. (he may have got a lemon, but I haven't used one in years & they may suck now) A master moldmaker can do wonders with old gear & some files, a new guy needs gear he can trust, not stuff he needs to work around.

I'm looking for a new exhaust, the vance and hines that I have blew apart. Does anyone have the new force exhaust system on their bikes? I was wondering if it gives as much horsepower as they claim. Also if they hold up from the vibration and does it sound like a harley or a lawnmower?

Blake,
Thanks for the image and the offer. What I'm afraid of is that it basically comes down to I can't prove it wasn't cracked before. Even tho the SM indirectly admitted as such I doubt he'll say that on the stand.

The other thing that got to me was I've had my Buells and Sportster up there before for work. I've never had a bike returned washed - except this time. The SM's last comment to me was "Those cracks are so small you probably wouldn't notice if it was clean." Coincidence?

Unfortunately this doesn't mean much either as my dad reported his FL was usually returned washed.

Anyone want to guess as to whether it will affect the safety of the bike? What would happen if it cracked completely?

Josh

What paint are buell frames painted with ?
Is it a powder coat or a conventional paint ?
I am referring specifically to '98 models.
I am wanting to convert my 98 S1w from White/white/white to Black/black/PM.
If anyone has one that they want to trade - let me know.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
I agree with aesquire, there are always trade offs with m/c's like those. You first have to decide what type of parts you might plan on making and what the maximum dia. and length might be. Usually what happens is you buy the m/c then find out the spindle inside dia. is to small or maybe the bed is not quite long enough or you just can't quite swing the dia. you need. I've seem more people grind the crap out of their lathe bed so they can swing bigger stuff. My opinion is you should buy individual machines and buy bigger than you think you need. Also when looking at lathes in paticular, even though it might be able to swing a large diameter check to see what the swing is over the carriage. Sometimes when the jaws are all the way out past the diameter of the chuck they will interfere with the carriage when you try to get in close to the chuck which obviously will cut down on the diameter you can swing. Anything else you want to know just ask. Personally I'd love to have room for a cnc lathe and m/cing center.

A only slightly related link I am crossposting here (it was on slashdot this morning).

It gives a list of 7 signs of "bad science" for use by judges. Some of them are very applicable to discussions we have here on badweb. It is a quick and easy read, though I could think of a half dozen or so additions that ought to be added to it...
