Looks like Buell 1200 owners are dependent on the aftermarket for engines. Wonder what that means concerning parts to rebuild? Any "Insider" information will be greatly appreciated.

So basically whomever is building that, took XB cases, changed the heads & is calling it an XB flattracker? Thats a crock.

Ever take a look at the Top Fuel bikes running in the AHDRA (All Harley Drag Racing Association). Or how about those 750 Harley dirt trackers, does Harley make a 750? And don't forget John Force's Top Fuel funny car is a Mustang! Oh and maybe you should ask JQ about the Sportster engine in the Buell XB.

Its kinda like you can buy Nicky Hayden's RC51 Honda race bike at your local dealer. If you squint hard enough and ignore enough things it might be... well at least it has two wheels.

yo ho Hoser! the BLURR has finally been unearthed, with the frame/front-end up on stands, and the engine carcass sitting tall on a separate workbench.

have spent the past few weeks detailing the frame assembly, undoing 70,000+ miles of oil leaks and road grime, and tidying up the wiring program.

am sitting on the fence concerning what to do with the engine. i have a strong hankerin' to get in there and rebuild it myself, yet i'm equally interested in turning it over to a professional (so it gets done right the first time).

just started a second job, with the extra $$ earmarked to getting the BLURR back on the road. my goal is to have it broke-in and ready by next July, just in time for FOUR-PLAY and SPLASH.

so, my hard-ridin' Canadian brother, will i be riding with YOU around Mount St. Helens next summer??? :)

Count me in , it's been three years since my last SP.L.A.S.H. . That dirt tracker is a little project I work on when time allows , a friend is a pro rider who will be mentoring me on riding teqnique , you know braking , turn in , back on the gas , foot up ,proper racing line. We have a newly completed track here ,practice on wednesday evenings ($10 / session )

I'm not sure if Herman still works at Victorville Buell/HD but he would be a good choice of rebuilders if you want to go that route and have the bucks. I know you can do head gaskets on the road. When was it? Arizona bike week in 1998?

there's a bunch of Canadians already expressing interest in SPLASH -- Stuart Wells and the usual suspects from Deeley's in Vancouver, S3Dave (who got his photo in every moto-mag known to man during the ALL CAL BRAG tour, and, single-handedly saved us hapless Americans from a mondo-ticket from the California Highway Patrol up near Angeles Crest), and.......maybe even Heather a.k.a. LittleOne.

looking forward to riding with you again, my friend, it's been way too long.

In regards to the posts stating that the 1200 motors are not available from the factory any more, that may kind of seem like a bummer at first... However feel safe in the fact that the general design of these motors has been around for a couple of decades longer than most Buell owners have been alive. Complete motors (that haul ass!) and plenty of quality after market parts will always be only $$$ away. As far as Tat putting a bike up for sale, WOW! If any of you have seen his bikes in person, they are absolutely beautiful, clean, head turning rides.

Greg, that was indeed the very first AZ Bike Week, and do you recall how dismal the weather was? (remember all the funnel cloud sightings at that "movie" ranch we rode to during day two?)

thank goodness for Woz and his famous "bread truck", or the head gasket repair woulda been even tougher.

Victorville Buell is about an hour-and-a-half from here, yet i've not visited them in all the years i've lived in SoCal -- maybe it's time, eh?

so, since i seem to be in the mood: will we see YOU next July at SPLASH???

I do indeed recall the weather. My youngest brother (one of three) had his bike shipped from Alaska to Oakland and we put our bikes in my FunMover motorhome. After 700 miles of wind and rain we made it to Avondale. That was Saturday it rained Sunday. We made a made a poker run on Monday and his Dyna ate its cam bearings on the way back, 5 miles from the RV. That sucked worse than the weather. We still got to demo some Buells , ride some BattleTrax and watch Higbee win ProThunder.

Oh yeah, and there was the Boss Hoss on the BattleTrax course. He was ssllooww but he never touched a cone.
The last couple of AZ bike weeks have been spread all over and aren't nearly as much fun.
By the way if your heading north in July you might check out Hollister, that was fun the first couple of times.
I don't know if I'll make SPLASH, I never plan that far ahead.

Howdy. My S2 is due for a 10,000 mile service. I've been studying the FSM and feel comfortable with most items involved but have reservations about 1) changing the fork oil, and 2) inspecting / lubing the swingarm bearings. Both appear to involve major disassembly of the bike giving me ample opportunity to muck things up. While I do have a centerstand lift it is one that lifts via the footpeg attachments so it would be useless for swingarm removal (necessary to inspect/lube bearings?).

Perhaps I'm reading too much into these procedures but they also call for some 'tools' that I don't have.

So, are the 10k services best left to pros? I think SB HD/Buell wants $450 for a 10k service - but if I could do it myself without mucking up the bike - I just don't know.

Just how hard is this stuff?

Greg, the invite to FOUR-PLAY and SPLASH is out there for you, would be cool to ride with you again, maybe you could hook up with me here at Lake Isabella first on your way in from Arizona. ever done the World Super Bike races at Laguna Seca? i ask because that'll be the appetizer for FOUR-PLAY...

PDX, SPLASH would be a gas if even only a few folks showed up, but it sounds like we're gonna have an entire batallion carving up the volcano this time around! (and dammit, for ONCE it'd be nice to get all the way up to Windy Ridge without having to put on snow chains...)

Jim_SB, the fork oil swap is relatively easy in the scheme of things, but the swingarm bearings are a lot more complicated. the three allen bolts that retain each sideplate will NOT want to come out; you'll need an impact driver for this, and new bolts standing by as the old ones will be toast by the time you're done with them.

this is the time of year, even here in balmy SoCal (sigh, it's 26 degrees outside as i type this...) to undertake projects such as these. my advice would be to go for it -- the shop manual is pretty thorough, and once you get in there and get everything back up to snuff, it'll all seem a little less mysterious next time around.

ps to Jim_SB: fab some sort of a support-stand from materials you probably already have lying around (2X4's, aluminum stock, etc.) -- or rig a sling from a garage rafter, perhaps -- to hold your S2's rear sub-frame from above while you service the swingarm.

I've done the Superbike races at Laguna several times. Lots of fun to watch especially the Cork Screw. I've also ridden around the track a few times and watched CART races there. I was once invited watch practice from near the flag stand on the backstretch going into the Cork Screw. The entrance to the Cork Screw is blind with nothing to aim at but a cedar tree! The fast ones come up the hill at about 150 or 160, lift the front end with the shift into top gear, then nail the brakes in preparation for the Screw. Kinda spooky from a civilians point of view.

I'll let you know if I decide to head up your way.

Jim SB,I have done both of those several times.Front fork oil is simple,you might want to upgrade springs while you are at it.And I took that opportunity to polish my triple clamps as you will be greasing your steering head bearings.On the rear,soak down the allen bolts with liquid wrench and get a brass drift to smack them with--it breaks the corrosion up.I struggled with a bolt for hours,gave up and rode to dealer.The mechanic had it loose in seconds,gave it a bang with the drift and it came right out.I made a spanner for the bearing adjusters on swingarm out of a pickle-fork (automotive front suspension spreader tool)as I did not have access to Buell special tool #whatever,and it works great,you can fab something similar.Just tighten up bearings til swingarm feels right-you'll know when.And if you are putting new bearings and seals--go to a bearing supply house not Buell--way cheaper and maybe better quality.Great cold weather project,good luck.
