I'd like to think the factory is real serious about developing their bikes. The engineers had a handful just getting the first bikes configuration debugged for initial sales. Now they're incorporating feedback from the field (us) and fine tuning the design. Hence the owners survey.

I'm glad they changed the XB's outlet. That was one of 2 things I noted in the survey I didn't like about the Firebolt. The other thing was that it lacked the torque for 2-up sport riding. So, since they fixed the first one, I guess they're gonna fix the torque thing, right? Of course! Let's see what develops. Hint, my those Nallin/High Country Buells are fast!

FERRIS, I had no idea they were going to even run it. Low & behold a year later there it was.If I wasnt a subscriber I never would have seen it. Needless to say I never seen a dime. In fact those tight S.O.B.'s wouldnt even give me a few exrta issues, I had to buy them. I tried to send ya one, but that was about the time ya dropped off the face of the earth. D.W.

>>>>>On a low volume production bike or any bike car etc any change can cost a manufacture a ton of money possibly even affecting certification. Just a thought, sorry for making you sick, it was just an observation.

Tim: How right you are, each change must be evalauted, prior to implementation, to insure that it doesn't set off an 18 month recert process.

And, puke if you must, but there are times that change is appropriate. Think of it this way; were that not so, this space shuttle I am watching would be forever lost. We'd be stuck with the speed of light calcs being based on the 190,000 that Newton calculated in 1666. It wasn't until years later, and against strong opposition from those against "change", that the figure was corrected to 186,000.

Bear in mind that our hero, Sir Issac, was working off some pretty sketchy info the Greeks had coughed up (puked, if you will) about the nature of the ellipse during a period that they had nothing but time on their hands having pretty well beaten lines and shapes to a pulp.

Change is good! Bad designs should be changed! How did it get to be designed that way in the first place? Didn't somebody in the whole design process figure out the exhaust was a little close to the riders foot?

I think those minor nuances are nothing...especially in comparison to the more troubling faults of the past. Things like that are downright nitpicking if you ask me.

Ray's animation took some of that bad taste out of my mouth. Thanks.

The exhaust is also pointing directly at a microphone used to measure noise from motorcycle. If it had been turned around to the other side,it would have passed the Australian tests, and I would be ridding one now.Or so the story goes.

It is either "hot crossed buns" or "hard boiled eggs."

Jose, send my prize via email to the address in my profile. I would like your source of hi-res pics for the SuperTracker you posted last week and other similar HD/BMC concept bikes. Actually, just the hi-res pics will do. Am planning to print and frame them.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

Those are good, let's see what everybody else can come up with!

Click http://www.glynnkerr.com/ for a webpage about his work. The HD bikes are in the images section.

BTW, Mr. Kerr is not too impressed with the aesthetics of the XB9R, it's in the newest Motorcycle Consumer News. He bashes Triumph too, and he's done some work with them!

Speaking of exhaust...I had never heard the exhaust note of my own bike except from atop or at idle being near the machine. I heard it this weekend...and damn it sounds sweet. Almost like an open pipe Harley but slightly throatier. This shop got cleared for some dyno runs to protect the innocent.

The designer says: "...for an almost perfect compromise between fresh and saleable I'd have to award top prize to KTM's latest Duke. That company is using innovative design to sell in a niche market, and yet the styling is under perfect control."

I'd love to have a new Duke (either single or twin, although the designer is speaking of the single) but I think they are a homely bunch of bikes.

I know we have a few guys posting here from Holland; I'm going to be in the country over Christmas/New Year (12/25-1/8). Is there any chance that there is a motorcycle/streetfighter show going on anywhere nearby during that time? I'll be in in Venray (close to Nijmegen). Thanks guys!

I was scanning one of the Brit m/c mags today in Barnes and Nobles. They had a long term XB9R they were talking about cutting a white wire going to computer(ala the Aprilia Mille etc.) after removing front fairing. It took the hole out of the midrange.Anyone else heard something like this?Did not pay attention to which mag it was.

Hey Jose,

They secretly do produce motorcycles with the exhuast pointing straight up thru the seat. They are donated to Washington for the staff of the EPA.

Fireman Jim I have not heard any thing like that, but it sounds interesting. I wonder if it would cause some sort of bad side effect.
That would have been a great article for Battle2win.
Fireman Jim thanks for the heads up, I will keep you posted on what i find out.

Regarding XB9R's ECM/wire clipping:

I think I read somewhere -here maybe?- that this is only on the International bikes. The US Spec bikes don't benefit from this modification.

What cutting this wire turns on or off I don't know, but I read it somehwere else, just can't remember.

Wish I could be more help.

Jim Mate,The cutting of the white wire does nothing for your U.S. bikes but for international markets the gain varies ,but does not bring the bike to U.S. specs. In Australia an XB9R with the wire cut gives you a whoppong great 65 rwhp,I have a dyno chart to prove it.the euro models gain more than us from the cutting of the white wire.

BUELL LIGHTNING XB9S RECOGNIZED BY

CHICAGO MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Milwaukee, WI (Nov. 25, 2002) - The Buell Lightning XB9S has been selected as a recipient of the 2002 Good Design Award presented annually by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

The award acknowledges the best and finest new design innovation for products and graphics. Two distinguished juries comprised of authorities in the design world based their decisions on aesthetic criteria measures such as: innovation, form, materials, concept, and function to select award winners.

"I was pleased to see that the Museum of Architecture and Design recognized Buell’s ability to merge stunning good looks with technical innovation,” said Mike Samarzja, Manager of Industrial Design for Buell Motorcycle Company. “The Lightning XB9S combines sensuousness and raw brutality in its visual appeal."

The Buell Lightning XB9S will be on display for the Chicago Athenaeum’s Good Design Show Exhibition in Chicago, Ill., from April 1 to May 17, 2003. The list of award winners will be posted on The Chicago Athenaeum web site:

www.chi-athenaeum.org on January 1, 2003.
