absolutely grounder . . . . no argument . . . . I guess what I was trying to say is that not many factories offer much inthe way of accessories, performance or not . .. . i think it's unrealistic, for exactly the reason you pointed out, for us to expect Buell to do a whole lot . . . . could be the size of the HD catalog has us yearning for something similar?

Why axle covers/heel gaurds when they know we want performance and handling?

Two additional perpectives:
1. Development cost - "Put a Pegasus on it and they will buy anything" mentality driven by low (read no development cost) costs made both nut covers and heel guards (even without a Pegasus) easy winners for Juneau Street. Even it they don't sell, they are a great deal less expensive a mistake than a shock that leaks or bags that crack.

2. Liability - Neither presents much of a liability exposure, as long as they don't fall off due to dealer installation ineptitude. Solution - sell them over the counter only. On the other hand, any performance/handling component that fails or encourages us to "exceed our limited abilities" puts Juneau Street in the crosshairs of every personal injury attorney looking to increase his billable time and/continguency fees. Heel guards and nut covers stand little chance of doing this.

Although I hope that I am seeing a departure from the what has been described as "each new rider is just an additional potential litigant" approach to customer contact, I am sure that both the legal and accounting types still hold major influence over those that have their fingers on the pulse of the riders.

Isn't that what they do to Harley's?
Don't we all wanna 'move up' to a Harley?

& José, ya gotta drop the 'paint shaker' thing too.
That color is molded-in there now.

Ebear,

See how people are when you miss a SCAB meeting...nobody even misses you.

I got to fondle a black XB9S at Glendale and I think that is going to be my next bike too. For me, just fits better than the XB9R for around town do it all bike (as your post has proven).

I have a long story tell on the JAG. Will have to give you a call.

Why did buell go to only making bikes for a 100 lb. pound person.
Buell sales are also down from 6,635 in 2001 to 5,062 units in 2002. How long will Buell last if they keep going down 23.7% from year to year.I might be wrong but, I do not look for the 2003 sales to increase much.
Just my .02 $ on this!

Last Sunday's Palomar ride was a Blast. Dr. Steve
and EBear were subsonic. EBear was draggin pegs on his XB9S with the pace Dr. Steve was setting. They made this Bueller proud.
It would be hard to imagine anybody faster than Dr. Steve. Its hard to believe the the Dr. has not rode his bike in appox 3 years and ride the way he rides.
We had a few new Buell riders on this ride which was great to see. I sure hope it continues. I can not wait to the next ride.
Also Tat show up on awesome Black XB9S with all kind's new items on his bike. His bike looks so cool. It recieve a lot of attenion.

If you want to hot up yer' Duc....the parts catalog has lightened, balanced flywheels, aluminum cluthes, Ti connecting rods, Carillo rods, hi-comp pistons, big bore kits, cams, hi-perf heads; all the goodies layed out on the table, you choose. Suspension components? Yup, there also. CF body work? Uh-huh, uh-huh. A veritable smorgasbord of 'stuff' right from the factory to the dealer.
Maybe there is something to the litigation thinking...a horde of hungry barristers salivating copiously at the thought of biting the hog leg...
I hope Buell can work this all out to our advantage because they have a fine machine now with real possibilities. I'm cheering 'em on, just waiting to find the Buell for my future...and that VSRC/Sportster/X1B thing looked real tasty.

Sorry guys; didn't mean to make mountain out of a molehill - or a long discussion of axle covers :)

I like the way they look too - they're nice. And I get the price point/production cost as well. But they indicate a perspective on us owners/riders that misses the point ... and that's all she wrote.

Here's one more example of the misplaced Harley mentality applied to Buells... Service tech at local H-D shop (non-Buell) bought a new M2 from a sister shop nearby. I was talking to him about it. He had a CF V&H muffler and had done carb tuning and light head porting/polishing. I asked him what he ended up with for jetting. He said he had put in a 170 main jet. My jaw dropped. He thought that a 170 might be too rich and was planning on switching to a 165. When I told him that the stock jet was a 195 or 190, I don't think he believed me. I guess if he isn't revving past 5 grand he may be okay. ohwell

LOL, I have a 190 in the CV I was running on my Dyna. With a 170 it wouldnt even hardly run.

Now I have this new Mikuni & have no idea which way to go with it.

Dyna,
Rummage back thru the carb archives, Aaron gave some good rundowns of jet adjusting for Mikunis. Might have been from summer of 2001 around the time of the Colorado event.

Maybe he had a Mikuni. What size main jet do do stock Sportsters have? I'm guessing a 165 or 170.

ASB's catalog site appears to be down. Is there another link that works?

Hey SoCal Buellers, how about posting yer ride reports in Storm Fronts - SoCal, so they don't disappear in Virtual Ether? There's been a lot going on locally but nobody's letting everybody in on the happenings. I can't be everywhere. BigJ, we need ya man!

Sorry, Usroute66, but www.americansportbike.com is the intro page which is OK. Then it changes to www.americansportbike.com/links.css which gives a message "Not Found. The requested URL /links.css was not found on this server." It doesn't seem to work for me. Anybody else have this problem?

Bomber, mikuni actually includes a tuning book with the carb along with a couple of spare jets.
I dont have the throttle cables yet so the bike is not running at the present time....well that & the fact there is no gas in the new tank.

I ordered up new stainless cables & once they are installed I am going to throw the old tank on..it still has some gas in it..and fire it up:)

Her is my point: do you really think that Carillo rods are made at the ducati factory???
As a matter of fact every thing you listed, is made by someone else, those gold ti forks in the catalog, there ohlins, duc has never made them,
You may not realize this, so i will try not to be to hard on you, but Carillo, is a seperate company, they make rods for lots of things, hi comp pistons, my guess is some italian supplier, but it could be Wiesco, dont be fooled, look at the prices of the stuff in the catalog, ever notice how much more those parts are than say other companies, i can buy most of what i need from spareshack, motowheel, and a bunch of other places at sometime %50 off the corsa catalog price, some not as good, some better

Grndskr,
I realize that Ducati doesn't make those parts, but they offer them in their Performance Catalog because they are made for Ducati for applications to their bikes...buy what you want from who ever offers the best deal, my point is that Ducati offers them through the catalog which would be akin to Buell offering Nallin kits for the XB's or laying out the ASB performance line up...Ducati offers more for it's bikes than just a 'race kit' much the same way the HD catalog has a bunch of performance parts for the twins. They have a fully developed racing parts list and even offer consultation with the factory for choosing parts...that's customer service and attention to customer needs and wants.
Will you get more attention from Ducati than you would from Buell? Do you speak Italian? Buell is a young company, give them time to develop, I'm absolutely sure there is more in store for the future than we know about today

And Buell race springs are made by race tech and Buell exhaust pipes are farmed out and ... and... the point is Duc sells it though dealers with their P&A catalog. Buell P&A catalog features dressup items.

As far as making their own stuff, when was the last time Buell make their own frame in house (let alone this country?)

HEY FERRIS.....Its not like we havent attempted to divert your riding time in THIS direction!!

EBear, i genuinely appreciate how hard you've tried to get me some seat time on your new Lightning. in the "old" days i'd drop ANYTHING to go riding, often at the expense of more important things (read: my kids).

these days, i'm trying desperately hard to be all that i can be (somebody REALLY oughta make a slogan outta that...), and my kids -- as it should be -- now come before twisting a grip.

not to worry, one of these days i WILL whip your XB in anger..............and i MAY even bring what's left of it back to you when i'm done! :)
