Freewaystreak,
Do NOT take your Buell to Barnett's. Unless you like getting bent over the counter... If you don't mind the ride, there's a great shop up in Las Cruces, Mesilla actually, called Wheelsport. They are a speed-shop and will work on anything with a HD motor in it. Dave Reynolds, the owner and master mechanic of the shop is quite a character. A drag racer from way-back, and an all around motorcycle enthusiast. Good prices, and great service up there. I used to live in Las Cruces, and would NEVER take my bike to Barnett's again.

TEAM BUELL ELVES

The accounting department, going into their 6th hour today, advises that 6 invoices (.pdf files) had the last line truncated. Those effected by the agregious error will be notified.

The PalPal address is "TeamBuellElves@aol.com"

In a related incident....Team Elves has come under the scrutiny of the S.E.C. for allegedly overstating 2001 Patch revenue by approximately $2.3 Billion. Team Manager Canfield was at a loss when queried as to why Martha Stewart had the 2,000 pathces on her when strip searched at the Canadian Border.

This concludes ELF NEWS, we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...

Okay, this has come up before but I need reminding. My 01 M2 speedo went South: It lights up and reads the miles but doesn't show speed or new miles (hmmmmm). IS this a thing to have done under extended warranty or a thing to do myself?

Also, I think I might be flooding at start ups since I had the 42mm Flatside installed. Anyone have that problem or some advice?

Thank you.

FogCity: It’s the old dead Speedo sensor trick and, yes, you could get it fixed under your extended warrantee. A new Speedometer Sensor costs about $50 from Sport Twin and you can install it yourself in 30 minutes or so.

Having it fixed under warrantee would cost fifty dollars for the deductible plus the cost of diagnosing the problem and might take weeks. Diagnosing a problem like this is a way for an unethical dealer to pad the bill a little.

Note: My Harley dealer had put a Race kit on another Bolt..but wasn't getting the power from it ??,,sounded great..but no extra Power..I think they have to work out some Bugs..cause the Kit is Brand New.
I'm sure Vance & Hines will be out with Something.

I had the weirdest thing happen yesterday.....

I was all set to ride my S3T to work. Fired up the bike and started putting on my packet & helmet. All of the sudden my bike revs to around 2200rpm and then dies. No spits or sputters, just dead. When I tried to restart, the bike would turn over but wouldn't fire. Because I needed to get my ass to work, I just left it sitting.

When I got home, I totally expected to start tearing things apart until I found the problem. It started immediately. I tried to get the problem to re-occur. I ran it through different rev ranges. Messed with the choke. Still couldn't get it to stall again.

Like I said....WEIRD!

I see, hear and feel those V-twins running down the road up hear in Kitchner ON and I start an uncontrolan\ble shaking and drooling. HELP!!! There is some hope on the horzion they may let me go home on Thursday (that is unless someone lets customs know I'm heading thru).
Anyway I've found Net access at $2.00CD/ 20min and I've got 8 min. left. So it's off to surf and maybe find a Dealer that needs to have a bike or two test ridden.

AWPrior..can I ask if you have an aftermarket jet kit on your ride? You know, Yost Power tube, or Dynojet Kit, Thunderslide, etc? I'm assuming you have an off idle bogging down problem too or when grabbing a handful of throttle to WOT while in the midrange.

I bought the bike used, and am fortunate enough to know the guy who had it before me. He rejetted it, I've had the carb torn apart once, and I know it has a 45 slow jet. I don't know if there are any spacers or whatever on the main jet though. It bogs pretty bad off idle going to wot. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, I'll tear the carb off again and see what it has for sure. What jets should I be using? I have a D&D full system, and a custom intake, which is basically a K&N wedged between two aluminum plates.

I'm siting here typing this message from Danville, Va, using Johnnie's Computer (thanks Johnnie!}

Why did I come here? I came down to watch the Superbike races. (Great track, great races, freaking hot, however)

Why am I still here? Because my S3T decided to break down, again.

Actually it's been broken down since Friday, when it decided to act up, sputtering, misfiring and just being unrideable while on the way
down to Danville.

Linda and I were headed down Va 522 (a very nice road) when the bike suddenly started misfiring. At the first gas station I found, we stopped so I could check the bike over. I could not see anything obvious (loose/chaffed wires, loose exhaust, etc) and decided to keep going. The bike was unrideable below 4,000 rpm, but I found that it seemed fine above that, so I kept it at around 4,500.

So I decided to keep going and see how far I could get, because we were in the middle of Nowhere in Central Virginia.

Going up the hills was a challenge, the bike would start belching black smoke as I tried to keep the rpms up as I climbed, bucking and
sputtering the whole way.

At this stage I was guessing that it was the Oxygen Sensor.

About 50 miles away from Danville, we stopped again so Linda could get something hot to drink, and I did not think to top off the tank, since we had only gone 100 miles since the first stop.

20 miles later, my bike ran out of gas, in the middle of a construction zone, at 10:30 pm at night, on US360, a road with gas station every 40 miles it seemed.

So I left the bike there, got on Linda's SV and we both rode up to the next gas station, about 15 miles away, got some gas, and went back to the bike.

We put the gas in it, it fired up and I rode it at 4,500 rpm again, and as we got to the spot where we had picked up the gas I had to
slow down for a car, and the bike shut down.

No power, no dash display, no headlight, DEAD.

I pushed the bike to a corner and we left it at the gas station. We got on Linda's again bike and headed to Johnnie's. We got to the house at 12:30 am (we left Springfield, VA at 4:45 pm) and "crashed". Obviously Linda was not happy at this turn of events (but she was not
happy since we left Springfield, that's a whole other story)

Saturday, we decided to leave the bike at the gas station and go watch the races. I did pick up a new Oxygen sensor, thinking that I could replace it and get the bike running right.

After the races, Johnnie got his trike and his trailer and we went to get the bike and bring it back to the house. At that point we also
picked up a new battery because everybody said "it's probably the battery" when I explained what the bike was doing.

So we got a new battery and brought the bike to Johnnie's. I changed the battery and left it charging overnight.

Sunday morning I took it out for a ride. Still the same, so I decide to go ahead and change the O2 Sensor. At this point Linda had left.
She did not want to go to the races again (they're boring according to her and she'd had enough of the Buell problems) so she took the
long way home.

I changed the O2 sensor, which involves removing the whole exhaust, and took it out again.

Nothing changed, it still sputtered and misfired. I checked every wire, every connector anything I could think off, put it back together and rode it again. Still there.

At this point I decide to give up trying to fix it.

Fortunately, I was allowed to borrow Lucy's (Johnnie's Wife) car to go to the races, where I met up with Jonnie and Richard Young (he was
also staying with Johnnie and did a track day on Saturday)

I got to watch the races and walk around the paddock and watch all the bikes parked all over the track.

I saw plenty of crotch rockets of everybrand, but the one that made me think was the Aprilias.

I saw more APRILIAS than I did Buells when I walked around the track.

This reinforced something that I thought about before, that if this is the crowd that Buell aimed the Firebolt at, Buell is in TROUBLE.

Aprilia has only been around what, 3 years, and sold less bikes than Buell did last year. But in this environment, Buells were a rarer
sight than an Aprilia.

Anyway, I watched all the races and hung out around the pits after the races to let the traffic die down and I picked up a bunch of
autographs. I also bought some tie down straps.

So tommorow, I have to find and rent a truck, strap the Buell in there, and ride back to the DC area, where I will deliver the bike to HDW and let them see what's wrong with it.

At this point I'm upset about a bunch of things, but mainly about the bike.

I don't trust it anymore.

I won't take it on a long trip unless it's on a trailer, and I don't like doing that.

Right now I don't feel like going to Pocono in two weeks because:

A)I doubt the bike will be ready by then, and
B)I don't want to go with out a bike or on some different brand and cause problems (but that would be fun, eh?)

I'm not sure I even want to be directing DCBRAG if I don't believe in the bike anymore. The low turnout for recent events certainly hasn't
helped.

So we'll have elections soon to elect new "blood"

So I'm getting a new bike, and it won't be a Buell, or a Harley.

I'll keep the S3 (I'd have to give it away to get rid of it), but I't won't be my #1 bike. Hopefully the repair bill won't be too
outrageous (There is a lot of soot inside the muffler and the headers, the inside of the engine must not look pretty).

But I'm done with new Buells.

I don't know what to get (well I have an idea) but I'll need something soon, I don't want to commute every day on Linda's Virago 535 very long (fun bike but small, BUT IT'S RELIABLE, and that's what I want more than anything right now).

Sorry,

Jose

There is no doubt that the Internet is the COOLESTtechnology that’s come along in my lifetime!
and anybody that thinks different is probably a Communist or something

I just got through “chatting” with a brother-in-law currently living in Bangladesh and I’m listening to a blues radio station from Murfreeboro, TN that says it’s the “Best Texan Blues on the web” (and I have no way to dispute that claim) and now I’m telling the entire free universe about it.
Is that just too freekin’ cool or what!
I’ve made friends I’ll never meet on the BadWeB. After crashing my M2 I’ve done a little research and found a new bike to buy in Southern California. I keep in contact with a friend in Australia. I check out the Brolly Babes on (the English web site) MCN every morning. If it wasn’t for the internet I’d probably have a nice looking lawn or something. Does that just suck or what!
God bless the internet.

Rempss, I still haven't looked at the work order, but if I rember it was 1.2 V.
Could be I'm just being picky, as the bike often runs hard & sweet, but when its not 100%, its not ya know?
Anyway, on another subject, is anyone going to Poag's Hole AMA hillclimbs in Dansville NY this upcoming Sunday? Anyone from the Rochester or western NY area? I'm riding down with a group of Hogs (but I'll be on the Buell o'course) The bikes they run up this hill are sick to see and smelling that Nitro after a run is just intoxicating...some harley engines too that really kick ass. And the hill? Its nearly vertical the last 100 feet or so, when you first get there, its like -no way anyone's gonna get up that

José:

Sorry to hear about your tribulations with your motorcycle. I'm glad you've come around and and are ready for something new. Have you checked the ground cable? Love/hate relationships oscillate from one to the other, I've been there. You are somewhat unfortunate to have had the most problematic year for FI. Maybe a chage to a carb and some headwork (don't mention the 4,000 its going to cost being about the market value of the your S3T) might bring back some confidence and enjoyment out of the old Buell.

Lastly, but not leastly is the fact that all possesions wear out their initial excitement and vehicles are especially suceptible to this. Its really too bad Buell is not making what we want they will always be our 1st choice when they do. In the meantime next time we meet at DG, you may have a Falco and I may be on my 999S, or it might all just be a dream.

Don't feel like the lone ranger, I am sorry to read about your Reliability / Quality issues. I know exactly how you feel. I lost confidence in my bike and have the exact same feelings that you are experiencing right now. I was able to sell my x-1 though. It is a shame that Buell's target market and core customers are abandoning the brand.

AWPrior..I had a most similiar issue on my bike a few years ago when I was first tuning the carb after ditching a dynojet kit that it came with. I felt the dynojet kit had some to do with it. (oscillating slider)

I ended up using a couple washers under the needle at about .026" thickness, went from a 42 slow jet to a 46 slow jet available from the aftermarket & at that time running a 170 main jet with a basic stage one 1995 Sportster 883-1200 using stock HD 1200 heads & pistons. Idle/mixture set at 1-3/4 turns. Your jetting would most certainly be different with better heads IMO & some other differences between the brands. So, you could be lean or it could be overly rich...that's why I use the Air Filter removed & run it to see what it does trick. Without the filter, more air is introduced leaning out whatever mixture you have. If it doesn't improve trying this, then I think a little more richness transitioning off the idle to midrange circuit may be it. This scenario of tuning to get the bog out took me about two weeks of fiddling with it, with the diaphram removed many times. CV's are great carbs once dialed in...they can be a little of a bear to get dialed in sometimes though. The throttle response on mine is as good as any Mikuni carb'd bike I have felt. Good Luck!
