Hey Reepicheep!!, Thanks for your opinion by the way. Did you or any of you have hear or try an XB9R or S?

I kind of like the XB9S also since I saw it. It is so weard looking that I like it even better more an more that I give it a blink!!!!!

It has a short end that I go crazy about like an S1. I just hope we can remove the extra hanging after the tail light.

Highoctane...if I were looking for another Buell...it'd either be a '98S1W, a 2000 up X1, or an XB. If I went the S1 route I'd be spending much in mods/upgrades (including putting a standard S1 tank on it). If I went the X1 route I'd be stripping that portly bitch down to the bone and slapping on the race kit and a CF aircleaner. An XB I'd leave fairly alone except for a pipe and that race ecm that'll be coming out some day. I guess I'd take some unneeded plastic off that, too. Needless plastic covers are my enemy.

Those wheels on Ebay...that dude is smokin' somethin' fierce.
...and speaking of Ebay...I literally can't even give away my stock S1 muffler. I think it'll make a nice target for the Big .50.

My 2000+ mile trip report and rocker box and tire questions...

Hi all, just got back from a trip to a sidecar rally in Virginia. With extra miles avoiding storms, sidetrips, etc. I ended up putting in 2600 miles altogether. The shortest route is never the funnest, eh?

My 2001 M2L gobbled up the mileage as easily as my airhead BMWs, and the Cyclone sure felt a lot more confident in the twisties. Along the way the classic rear rocker box gasket leak developed, nothing much, about a half quart in 500 miles. Can I put off committing my beloved Buell to the dealer service department for heaven knows how long for repairs, or is this something I have to get fixed now?

At 7900 miles the Dunlop 205 gumballs are on the wear bars. Actually they've been on the wear bars for about the last thousand miles... as they say, good to the last millimeter! Any advice as to what tires will give better mileage?

BuellGrrrl,

I know how you feel about Cyclones eating miles. Mine has covered 14k miles in less than a year of ownership. The rockerbox thing isn't a major problem, but it will continue to get worse until oil is actually misting out onto your pantleg, the battery, the frame, etc. If you want the dealer to do the work you should probably schedule an appointment before the leak gets too bad to ignore. Personally, I think that if you have the dealer do the work you're missing out on an important aspect of owning a Buell. Buells are incredibly easy to work on and it gives you a better understanding of the bike. Replacing a rockerbox gasket is a really straightforward job and should take under two hours the first time. If you decide to do it yourself let us know and we'll be glad to give you the details.

As for higher mileage tires . . . not to sure on that one. Lately I've been looking for tires with more traction and I'll sacrafice mileage to get it. I've heard good things about the Bridgestone BT-020s but I don't have personal experience with them. I found the best prices at discountmotorcycletire.com, YMMV.

BuellGrrrl, If your '01 is less than a year old or if you have an extended warrantee you should let the dealer do both rocker boxes for FREE. Free is a good thing.

You can get a better understanding of your bike next time. Actually, there shouldn't be a next time. The gaskets that will be installed are much better than what's in the bike now and should last almost forever.

Buellgrrl, I have gotten terrific mileage from my Pirelli Dragon GTs - over 7,000 miles on both and there's still a little life left in the rear tire. Go to www.pirelli-moto.com, click Tyres, and then look for the Dragon GT tires - MTR-03 front and MTR-04 rear.

BuellGrrrl: The rockerbox job isn't too terribly hard to do. BUT if the bike is under warranty - have it done soon, and be sure that they install the new METAL rockerbock gaskets. The original ones are paper and fail regularly.

I have been using Avon Azaro's on my M2 for a few years now. Nice, predictable handling, and decent tread wear.

I would be willing to bet that the tail section on the XB9S is designed to be removed... Buell knows what people do to these bikes and generally makes it VERY easy. Heck, the factory main jet on my cyclone was perfect for a replaced airbox and exhaust, it was way rich for the stock setup.

I love BOTH XB9 bikes, probably the S more then the R, but I would not turn down either. The only reason I agonize at all, is that you could probably score a nice used M2 for $5000, and while the XB's are no doubt much nicer, I don't know if they are TWICE as nice... but it's close, they have me thinking, thats for sure.

If I were going to buy new? No question, I would be on a waiting list for an XB9S in a second.

The XB9s is a tremendously compelling motorcycle... It pains me to think of EVER parting with my Cyclone, but every time I look at that 9s the mental equations start running... and I start calculating garage space... and thinking I need to start building up some SERIOUS spousal karma... I can't possibly do it, either financial prudence wise, time wise, garage wise, or any other wise... but boy I want to.

If I were just looking for a new bike and did not already have a Buell I have "bonded" with? I would have reserved one about 15 minutes after I saw the first link to the XB9s here last monday...

The rocker box job is a lot of fun (I can't believe I just said that ). It was my first "bonding experience" with my Cyclone.

I can still remember sitting on the proverberial milk crate, looking at one of my pushrods in my hands (pulled it out just for kicks, it sits right there), thinking "this is SO cool".

Especially if you were like me, and born into a world of complicated monolithic overhead-cam modular appliance vehicles that resist all repair and modification, it is not an opportunity to be missed.

Mine started a slow leak, and within 1000 miles or so, was spraying all over my pants leg, so whatever you do I would not put it off too long.

If you do it, get gaskets for both, the next one will probably let go in another 3000 miles or so. You will also want an allen key that you can hacksaw about half an inch off of the end, and of course a torque wrench.

It took me longer then 2 hours, but it was not more then a comfortable evenings work in the garage with a good radio station on a warm summer night.

I agree as I just finished my first rocker gasket about 5 minutes ago. It is really exhilerating fixing something yourself. It took me a good deal more than 2 hours, but that included running around and taking the covers off and retorquing.

I forgot my key, but I am pretty sure I got it right this time. On to take the header off and stop the rust on the bolts before they sieze.

That's interesting..Sportster sales are down by 11,000 this year from June time frame last year. The Buell sales look pathetic...don't take this wrong folks, only 1500 units that were not Blasts in one year??? That has to be all the bikes members of this List own!

Anyone seen a RR1200 or 1200S anywhere for sale??

reread that chart, I think it says that they shipped about 1300 MORE sportsters in the first 6 months of this year 2002 than last year. 25,651 in 2002 vs. 24304 for the first six months.

to be fair to Buell, they stopped production on the tube frames and switched over to the X-frames, so that's not surprising that the shipment numbers are lower.

What I find amazing are the VROD numbers, pretty impressive, already TWICE the production numbers than Buells and at $17k+ a pop.

If the customer is always right, I think what these numbers say, in part, is that they want more power and are willing to pay for it.

Looks lkike a 14% gain for since the Firebolt started shipping. that's pretty healthy and seems to show pretty good demand for the bike.


I like seeing that the whole heavyweight sales are up. Looks like a pretty good year for the bike industry. maybe not as good as 2001 but prety good. so much for all the doom and gloom I have been hearing.

Those numbers are great! From Jan to June last year they sold 3350 heavyweight bikes (all three models). In the less than three months the Firebolt has been available, they have sold 2006. That's a strong statement and very encouraging.

Also of note is that while Buell has sometime out sold Ducati in the USA a signifigant number of those sales are seemingly low profit Blasts and total production can't be much above 10000 units at best. I think ducati is selling 50 to 60000 bike year, (Jose probably has actual figures;)) and triumph is also in that range. Even aprilla has bigger numbers 'cause they have lots of little bikes.

why should we care? Because it is refelcted in what sort of racing budget and R&D budget Buell has.

Buell is tiny and has little money compared to ducati or aprilla. Without HD the whole deal would not be possible, even with them there is a limit to how much cash HD will pour into Buell.

No new motor? Can't see where the cash would come from. A new motor would be way more expensive than the the new 'bolt design. Many compromises were made in the motor design to keep using the same tooling. this freed up more moeny for the rest of the 'bolt.

If the bolt lineup is successful I suspect in 4-5 years we will see another new bike from buell but this one will be as revolutionary in the motor department as well as the chassis.

In the meantime I plan to enjoy the 'bolt.

Vanson and Buell Jackets...
Local dealership has a few Medium size Thunderbolt jackets for 30% off ($225 instead of $320. They also have a men's medium gray Vanson, men's large red Vanson, and a women's medium Vanson for 30% off ($420 instead of $600). If anybody was looking for these, let me know and I can pick them up for ya. Not a plug for the stealership, just thought mabe someone was looking.
