I'm thinking about selling it but would I be able to get what I want for it? I'm thinking in the area of 7500 or best offer. I know it sounds like a lot but could I replace it for that, no way. I want a 1125R and that seems to be a good way to get one started. Theres nothing really stock about this bike, its been gone thru and done right for as long as I've had it. I do all my own work and some upgrades are as follows, Millenium 1250 kit, 42 Mikuni, custom thermal coated header, my own built muffler, H-8 Andrews cams, polished this and polished that, PM wheels, M2 swing arm, custom seat, custom paint, tons of Xtra parts and more. Guys, tell me what you think and if you have any ?'s let me know, thanks.

(I hear that there's a girl over on advrider's site that might be looking for a new Buell.)
sorry, couldn't resist.

You're bike is in that category of needing to find a buyer who likes what you did so far and realizes the savings he or she will realize by buying your bike instead of building their own.

Nice looking bike!

My experience is you modify bikes because you want to and rarely recoup your investment. (I learned this the hard way.)

I'm sure that if I did the math I would be losing a few grand. I look at it this way, these bikes are getting hard to find, there still wanted by many. As an owner who MIGHT be willing to sell one we and only we should set the price. I hate to see a 98S1w for sell for 4000, I think the bike demands more respect than that.

i agree...dammit!!

it just pisses me off that a cookie cutter 98 sportster will sell for more than an S1W!! the buell is far superior in almost all aspects of handling, power etc. had to get me started didn't ya???

hold out and don't sell unless you have to!!

my opinion, you should be able to trade straight across for an 1125r. what they have on you in performance and tech is more than made up by the beauty of yours. don't sell it!

as for resale values in general, wtf??? :

(that M2 is in the category of "buy it for the parts to upgrade your own and put your old stuff on it and sell it for $3,500" )

$7,500 for the S1 above would be a deal.

98S1Lightning,

Just wanted to give you a piece of my history...

In 1998 I bought a BRAND NEW, Black/Nuclear Blue S1... LOVED IT....

In 2001 I got STUPID.... and thought I needed a NEW GSXR 1000.... sold my Buell and bought it....

I saw the guy that bought my S1 and could NOT believe it when i saw it COMPLETELY TRASHED OUT....

Now... I have (2) X1's.... but the S1, is STILL in my mind and i HATE knowing that i got rid of it....

REALLY REALLY... think about this before you do it.... You WILL NEVER have this bike again... and another LATER ON... will NOT be the same...

I hope that you keep it... As i KNOW that I have been looking for one to keep for about 5 yrs now... and have had NO luck finding one in my price range that MEETS MY condition expectations...

I hope this helps...

Matt (LEO SOUTH GA.)

Granted, the bikes deserve more respect than the used market draws, but,

My first X1 cost me 7300. It was 3 years old. My second one recently cost me 3500. It was 2 years older. The market has recovered some, but not appreciably. For a really clean bike, you can expect 1-2K extra, certainly not 3-4K. And I have seen excellent S1s in shops at $4500. (Homecoming-2006-Appleton)

As you state, the seller holds the chip to set the price, it's up to the buyer to determine if the price is reasonable. Reasonable to one is unreasonable to another.

Personally, I have had no problem finding people with excellent Buells they wish to unload for peanuts. Their loss, my gain, IMHO.

In 2004, I had just such an opportunity to buy a 9R. Tons of carbon fiber, one real looker, dirt cheap. Today, I rarely start it. It's personality is nothing like my tubers, and frankly, it's just a bit overly refined for what I want. I would be surprised if you didn't end up with a similar feeling. As MM128 points out, some decisions can't be erased.

Around here, S1's are going for $4K, + or -, regardless of improvements. Blame the Mutant craze, I guess. You may never get back the money you put into that bike, but certainly not the time, trouble, effort, love, etc. The problem with "customizing" is that so few people want exactly the same thing. You'd likely start seeing all those parts on ebay.

Speaking of parts what is that air intake?

I'm guessing you're bored with it, now that you've done everything to it you can do? This feeling can be overcome !

But then again, that's how Arlen Ness started. Make one, then another...

I traded my 2004 Sportster in on my 2007 Firebolt. The dealer gave me $6500 for it in December (that's $2000 less than I paid). The bike had about $5000 worth of extras on it (not including all the crap I put on and later took off). They didn't do a thing to it and put it on the floor for $8300.

It's now August, and my old bike is STILL sitting on the floor. I laugh every time I see. I cafe'd it, something you don't see done often. I think it's the only way to go with a Sportster. I guess I'm the only one.

When I made the deal I didn't think I did all that good. The fact that it's sitting on the dealers floor almost 9 months later makes me smile.

The point of that rant was to explain just how much it matters that in order to get what you think the bike is worth means you have to find someone who wants exactly what you've done. People aren't willing to pay for what they don't care about. There's a $2000 set of custom-sized aluminum spoked wheels on my old bike - I bet no one that walks by it even notices.
