Hello all,

My 2003 blast has been sitting for 2 weeks now. Going to start using it again for my daily commuter. Checked the oil level and discovered that there is no oil in there. Evidentally, the oil has tricked down into the crankcase. (I know the oil level was between the marks when I parked the bike 2 weeks ago.)

My questions are:

1) Can I just fire it up and let it run OR should I add some oil to it because the top oil hose is the supply hose which (I think) has no oil available until the crankcase gets scavenged?

2) What part in the system is most likely faulty that will cause the oil to drip/dribble/drain into the crankcase during storage?

PS I much rather prefer 2 stroke premix or wet sump 4 stroke. Too bad someone didn't put an outboard powerhead on a motorcycle. That would be way cool.

Do Not Add Oil!!!
This is normal!
You've already gotten into the habit of checking the oil hot when you park it, which is good. Go by that reading and if in doubt check again when warm.

You'll find when changing the oil to be particular about how much oil you put back in it. Its very easy to overfill.

1) Fire it up and let it run. Even with the oil full, it barely reads on the dipstick when full.

2) It's probably fine on oil - If you can see oil in the tank with the dipstick out, you have enough oil. It VERY unlikely that all 2 qts of oil have left the oil bag and are "wet sumping" your engine. If your crankcase is indeed filled with oil, the crank is going to throw a ton of oil around and lube the whole bottom end while your cranking the bike over. Briggs and Stratton use this "splash" oiling system as their only oiling system...

If you're absolutely mortified by the suggestion of starting up your bike with the oil level not reading on the dipstick, drain the oil bag into a nice clean container, and see how much is still in there. I'm guessing over a quart, probably closer to a quart and a quarter.... After you've see how much oil is still in the tank, pour it back into the bike, warm it up, and check oil level like normal.
