Aha, I was paged - sorry been off the net for a bit - divorce finalizing, moved to a new house, put roof on new house, etc. etc.

I'm pretty sure buellzilla put up some instructions in the archives, complete with pics, when he changed his rocker box gaskets. Not much different than changing valve cover gaskets on a car, only a lot less space to work with. Be careful when you take the gas tank off - the fuel switch goes to "on" if you bump it on the ground - fire hazard, to say the least. Tourqe specs are in the service manual - I'll look them up when I get home if you don't have the manual.

Guys-

My question has already been answered regarding the rocker boxes. I have the manual but I was just hoping to keep as much of the bike together as possible. Gas tank is no big deal.

I've read about a lot of people here who have had problems with their dealers. I just wanted to post and see if my experience is truly exceptional or similar to what others experienced.

I bought my bike a month ago. I got a great price from the dealership ($900.00 below retail). I got 10% off all of the accessories I bought that day. 2 items were not in stock, but I ordered them and they were delivered within a week. I had my tag and title in my posession in 10 days. I was feeling really good about the experience and even e-mailed the dealer to tell them how happy I was. Although I haven't ridden the bike long enough to see how their service is, I am pleased so far.

Today I went to the mailbox to find:
1. A personalized thank you card from the Sales Manager.
2. A personalized plaque with a picture of a yellow Blast, my name, my bike's VIN# and the signature of the dealership owner. It's really nice and will be a great addition to my office wall.

Bottom line is, they probably lost money by selling me the bike at that price, yet they are treating me as if I bought the most expensive bike on the floor. I am so impressed. I drove 50 miles to this dealership mostly for the price, but also because they always returned my e-mail and answered all of my questions. I corresponded with them for a couple of months before I actually bought the bike. Once I got to the dealer, I knew that I made the right choice in buying there.I couldn't get anyone at the local dealership to acknowledge my presence, let alone sell me something.

Is this experience special or is this how the Harley dealers treat all of their customers? As I said, I haven't had any service done so I will reserve final judgement until then, but I am really impressed so far.

Congratulations on the new Blast. Does your wife ride already or is this her first bike? I've had mine a month and love it so far. I'm new to riding, but am enjoying learning and the Blast makes it a lot easier.

Mapes - The dealerships up north here (Minneapolis) are about that good. I haven't heard of any plaques.. that's amazing!

This is my wifes first bike. I am a little concerned about her riding to say the least based on her aggressive driving habbits.I just keep talking to her about the consequences of not riding defensively.She is scheduled for a ccrider class in a couple months. Scot

Scot, If it's any consolation I had the same worries about my wife. Behind the wheel shes like Marina Andretti however once she got on her bike she mellowed out drasticly. She now pays much more attention to the road and even gets bent when I play hoolligan.
My Blast is just about the way I want it ergo wise which figures since I'm sending the head off to Nallin next week. By the end of May I'll be a 515cc blast...And learning to ride it all over again with 50 or so HP. I'll shoots some photos of it right before I tear it down and post them

Argh!!! doing the bills tonight with the boss (my wife that is) nailing down all the bills that have to be paid in the next 6 months before we move to Japan it became apparent that the expense of the Nallin upgrade was more than we could afford at this time It is still something that I want to do so hopefully next spring while I'm at sea my head can be on Brians bench. Also since I only have 6 months left here not having the Blast for a month would have been a bummer.
On a more positive note I'm really loving the clubman bars (photos to come next weekend) I've been able to do a number of stopies quite easilly. They realy do lend an air of hooliganism to the Blast. Then again from all that I've been told by other bikers lately mine looks very fun to stuff in corners (it is)

Picked up the blast today. Had a 20 mile ride home on it. Got home got off bike and looked down, the whole bottom right side of engine,belt and rear tire were covered with oil and oil was puddling up under it.It looked like it was coming out of where the wires exit the timing areaof the crankcase. They came by and picked it up this afternoon. Wife is pretty depessed,she was going to learn how to ride today.Scot

Darnit Tony, i warned ya about those.. lower bars and higher pegs make for instant trouble, it's like being 15 again..

Scot, now that all the seals are in place, the only time you should be on the look out for something like that will be +/-3000 miles for that blasted rocker gasket. Here's a hint, though, after my troubles (not many by the way) My roomie idles his for about 4 minutes to heat everything up before taking off. A lot of times that's kind of a luxury, but he does it religiously, and he's now on 5000 miles with the paper gaskets.. no leaks!

Take the time to idle them, just don't let them sit long (same as any wildly caged animal I 'spose..)

I have been riding my bike for a few weeks now and notice that after about an hour my tailbone starts hurting. Is this common with the stock seat? I have the higher seat on mine. Have any of you tried the Corbin seat? If so, does it help? I think I remember reading that it is a little lower than the higher seat. Can you tell the difference? I'm pretty comfortable with the seat in the beginning of the ride. Are there any other alternatives?

I went almost two years with the stock seat before I saw the light and bought a Corbin it is a bit lower and the "seat" is a bit aft of the stock unit. I have yet to do a round the island run on it but I do find it much more comfortable than the stock unit. The way my bike is set up now I find I have all kinds of movement choices and places to sit. As for alternative to the stock seat Corbin is the only aftermarket maker that I know of...however come winter you could send you stock seat tray to Sargents and have them do a custom job on it.

Hi! Thanks to you guys and gals here on the BWB BBS I have learned SOOOO much about what to do and what to look out for on my 2001 black Blast. It's still pretty much stock (windshield and saddlebags), but just yesterday we got my Corbin seat on and so far I am really impressed with the comfort level. I have found that it lets you sit back a little farther and really supports your "sit-bones" more than either of the stock seats. Can't wait for my first long ride on it--
thanks again for all the tips -- I wouldn't have even considered this seat until I saw some postings on it!

Hey Mapes, we recently received a Corbin seat for Lisa's Blast. Although they list it as an inch lower than the taller stock seat, it is at least as tall or taller when considering inseam equivalent. It's wider & you can scoot back further on the seat. It is infinitely more comfortable than the stock seat. This is the second we've tried & it does not fit properly either. There is a large gap at the back of the seat where it should sit flush with the tail section. It is even more pronounced when someone sits on the rider section with no passenger. I'm going to call Corbin at their California office later today & see if they are changing their mold for their base pan. It is definitely off. If they are not, then we'll have Sargent make us a seat.

It sounds like "fit wise" it might be worth looking into. Do you know if the Corbin place in Daytona sells them or do you have to order them? It's a bummer that it doesn't fit right. I looked at the picture on the Corbin website and it looks really good. Would you let me know what you find out? Right now I am mostly doing short trips so it's not that big of a deal. I think an all day ride might get to me a bit though.

On Corbin, I had that fit problem as well. Part of it can be fixxed by not installing the lock bolt as deep on the seat pan. This put less tension on the seat and the rear rode lower. Since this is true a spacer under the front tongue of the seat would likely help as well. For me I don't really care since the Corbin is soo much more comfortable than the stock seat that I ignore the gap though I will try the front spacer bit.

Any recommendations on a new rear tire? My dealer wants $104 for the Dunlop K330, but I seem to remember seeing that listed online for $80.70. Is that right or am I making things up?
Also, how hard is it to take off the rear wheel? If I take my bike in and have them do everything, it would cost me $65 for labor, but if I take the wheel off myself and bring it in they'll only charge me $15. It'd be nice to save those $50 for something else.

I didn't realize that they were local. Makes me wish I would've bid on that used seat on E-bay a couple of weeks ago. That way I could have a new one done and still have the original!

If you have a rear wheel or center stand removing the raer wheel is a breeze. the only other tool you will need is a 36mm socket or wrench. All you do is get the wheel up in the air, unbolt the axle nut, pull the axle, the rear brake just slides out and pull the wheel off. You can even hang the rear end up with ratchet cables if you don't have a stand.

As for tire choices. I highly recommend the Bridgestone BT020. Very good grip and wears like stone. I have 5,000 miles on my rear and it still has at least 30% good tread left!! Chapparal sells them for around $93.

Blast? or is it the wife's?
I wasn't aware that Bridgestone was making a tire. Cool!! I'm only going to get about 3,000 miles out of the Pirellis. I guess practicing all of those takeoffs from stop lights is not helping much either. I'll have to give the Bridstones a try this time around

Damn I have 4K on my pirelli rear (8K on the front) and it only cost like $65 ($117 for thepair). Avons are a bit more pricey at abut $140 for the pair but that's what I have on order for my next set. I have found that the blast rears are very suceptable to bad tire pressure. Pay attention to it or you tire will suffer.

Removing the rear tire is easy. Just need a peg stand or a engine lift to hold the bike up.
Bridgestone does make a rear tire that will fit the Blast, just not a matching front tire.:(

I paid about $110 for the pair of Pirellis, and did the change out with the help of MikeJ and his lift. Thanks again Mike. Feel like doing it again sometime in the next couple of months?

Tony-I will have to stay on my tire pressure as you suggest. I admit I have been lax in checking it.

So we have the choice of Dunlop, Pirelli, Avon. I haven't run across any others, has anybody else?

Ok..this is my first posting here.. not sure if this is the right area for this either.

Anyways.. I am the very happy owner of a 2001 Buell Blast (Black) which I purchased here at the San Jose HD/Buell dealership about a month ago. It was all bone stock with 500 miles on it. About 2 1/2 weeks ago I bought a Vance and Hines Exhaust and a Dynojet Jet kit for it. I immediatly took off the stock exhaust and placed on the Vance and Hines. I have not installed the Dynojet kit yet. I've been noticing some fuel issues with the bike... I'm not quite sure if they are related to the aftermarket exhaust or not.

This is my first real motorcycle so I don't have much to compare it to. I didn't get a user manual when I bought it but I believe the Gas Tank holds 2.8 Gallons. (Which by my calculations should go about 170 miles a tank) Before I put the exhaust I got about 105-115 miles before I would have to flip on the reserve switch... Is that normal? That seems like an awfully big reserve...

On to the more serious issue.. like I said.. I put on the exhaust and have not installed the jet kit yet. The past week or so when I've been going on the freeway and doing anything around 70mph the bike feels like its running out of gas. I know I have gas because I've only gone 40 miles since my last fill up. I have to pull into the slow lane on the freeway, pull in the clutch, rev up the engine pretty high and then it starts to feel "normal" again. If I cruise it at 60-65mph it seems to do ok I guess but as soon as I start to give it gas to get up to speed with everybody else the bike starts to sputter like its running out of gas. The first time I didn't know what the hell was going on... I though I ran out of gas... So I pulled over and put on the reserve and went slowly the rest of the way to work. Am I having carb issues? Is this because I haven't installed the DynoJet kit yet?

Somebody please help! I love this bike so much but it's a bit scary doing 70mph and having the gas cut out like that. Thanks!
