I pretty much lost interest in them when the Motorclothes folks took over. They never really did a good job of "capturing" the Buell mindset. Every year ROADWORKS is published and it had all the bikes, accessories, dealer info, schedules . . . a little bit of everything. I also packed mine full of tons of other useful information like the bill of materials for the 1995 dual rotors for the S2, the original "Race Buell Formula" from Henry and so forth . . . Anyway . . .  | ||

We need a Buell Museum.... Great stuff and thanks for posting the pictures and the explanation Court. I noticed "The Space Shuttle Operating Manual" A couple of jobs ago I had the pleasure to interface with NASA when we at USNORTHCOM (specifically Standing Joint Force HQ-North and 1st Air Force) were trying to figure out the logistics of DoD support during each mission. It goes off without a hitch these days. So much so that the team of 25 people was reduced to 2 just a few days ago. I met and worked with some great people. | ||

I've long had a fascination with NASA. My Uncle was one of the first Astronauts and still, to this day, Uncle Craig and Aunt Sandy through the annual beer bash for all the guys going back to the Mercury and Redstone rocket days. One of my favorite things in my office all all the mission seals. Craig had to be present on each and every recovery so he'd send me a letter postmarked from aboard the carrier. They always came with the ships postmark and the BIG mission emblem. Favorite thing from the entire ordeal is a rock I have in a safe deposit box.  Shhhhhhh We may have to start a museum because we are in the process here of preparing to get rid of about 4 pickup loads of stuff. . . . it's gettin' on time. | ||

I was thinking the same thing about a Museum when I was scrolling through the pics. It would be a shame for all that history to not be shared. Now the question becomes how to get it funded... I used to think, at one time, that we'd restore the barn (got a good deal of it started last year) and perhaps build something there. It'd likely take a good 10,000SF. Then I thought the new "Buell Global Headquarters" (announced by HD shortly before Buell was dispatched) would be a great place for a Buell Visitors Center. I'm not sure what will start to happen with the stuff. At one time we'd even talked about getting some of the old time folks together to make certain we consolidate our stuff in one place . . there is some REALLY neat stuff. . . many of the "first" items. . . lots of "trial and error" (I've got some experimental S1 rotors laying here on the desk) and tons and tons of stuff. Who knows. At one time Harley-Davidson had contacted Dave and I about buying everything we had . . . they, I sensed, didn't really want it so much as they wanted us not to have it. I think they were waiting on me to start scanning pages from Buell confidential documents from the 90's (that would have been quite embarrassing to them) but I'd never do that. I'm getting ready to do some major cleaning . . . I have a significant part of Aaron's barn full of experimental and prototype S2 stuff that there was simply not room in NYC for and all the stuff here. I may just get a 22' Ryder truck and dump it all in Erik's garage and let him deal with it . . . he needs a hobby. | ||

I suspect that EBR doesn't have enough space to house a museum... I think we should push for the next version of Buell Inc headquarters to have a large museum attached, complete with examples of all our "old school" Buells, and all sorts of other Buell paraphernalia... | ||

A bit of trivia perhaps regarding the Space Shuttle, NASA and astronauts: a portion of the former Rockwell facility that built the Shuttles and Apollos has been turned into a movie studio, Downey Studios, which had a part in cranking out over 30 TV & movie productions. I've got a couple pics of the studio taken from the street. I worked for Rockwell in the 70's on all the orbiters in that plant. My job was to design adapter cables for an automated wire harness tester, program the tester to checkout all the orbiter's wire harnesses and control panels, help run the tests and sell them to NASA. Talk about a fun, dream job, that was it. We got to climb in every nook and cranny of the crew module, aft & mid fuselage, locating connectors and helping the techs complete the tests. Every so often an astronaut or other dignitary would do a walk-through of the facility whereby we would take a break for a meet & greet. President Reagan visited the plant once and gave a speech in Building 1. I'm glad to see the plant being preserved & used for worthwhile purposes. | ||

Actually . . .they were the "give away" shirts (like the blue and yellow Cyclone shirts in 1997) for taking a test ride on a 1995 Buell. We didn't use all of them so when we built the 1,000th Buell Laughlin/Constable sent them to George and had the rest of them printed with the "1,000th Buell Built" graphics. | ||

In all seriousness, though - if stuff needs to go somewhere "or else", please get in touch. Kim and I will find a safe place to keep it together for posterity. I have (had) the Space Shuttle Operator's Manual too. When I was a kid a friend of mine & I would lay on the floor & put our legs up on chairs as though we were sitting in the shuttle on the launch platform & go through the launch procedures! That brought back a memory that was way back in my mind under a bunch of other stuff! | ||

Would be cool, if someone in East Troy had a vacant store front on the square that would donate the space to the museum....maintained by volunteers. There are a lot of retired folks and motorcycle enthusiasts that would donate time to sit in a place and let people come in and look. Just a thought. It would be a good plug for East Troy, I would think. There is a cool motorcycle museum in Buellton, that an independent collector has set up. A small little motorcycle museum in Miami Oklahoma that a collector has set up. You cannot make any money at it. It would have to be a donation basis only, or supported by someone....then get volunteers to keep it open. Several of us could really design something nice. Motorcycle displays of the Buell motorcycles, walls of great photos, displays of certain parts, etc. A video that would show enthusiasts at homecomings, etc. Just a thought. REX | ||

Another idea. We do not have HOG or BRAG dues anymore. There are quite a few Buellers out there. Could we now support the Buell Motorcycle Museum? Something along that line. A yearly membership, that helps support such a place in East Troy. Could be an on line newsletter. It could be like the old Borg of the past.? Just a thought. | ||

We had a wonderful (the largest gathering of Buells in one place at the time - 6 Buells) first owners gathering in 1990. Erik Buell and his entire family were there. | ||

Thanks, Court. Don't remember the Fairlawn issue, but did spend many summer nights riding Wanamaker when it was 2-lane chip-n-seal with cows grazing next to the road, and now there's a mall in the cow pasture. Court, I think it was Topeka I stopped at once. I was helping my sister move across country and we pulled in to what looked like a Holiday Inn right downtown and adjacent to a prison. It turned out to be the weirdest hotel visit I ever had, the "prison hotel" we called it. Oh well, that was my impression of Topeka. | ||
