As only a matter of his engineering GENUIS, I and others would like to know the bikes that Mr. Buell had a hand in designing. With the history he has working sometimes with other brands, what models did he develop? | ||

I had the privilege to attend a dinner with and meet Mr. Buell. He was just as nice as nice can be, even when I took my kids up to meet him, he took special care to make sure they could simply just have a picture taken with him. They all have their signed posters hanging on their walls and they wanted a bike like their dad. I am hoping that someday that can still happen. LONG LIVE BUELL. And yes I will read those books. | ||

Court told us at Buellganza some years ago that Erik designed a large well known Japanese bike from the ground up, including engine. It's not for me to say, nor do I know if Court was winding us up or not, lol. Have you ever wondered how the Yamaha Warrior engine looks very ho hum, American? I have. Found its way into the stunning MT OS prototype too, and made it into production as the MT01. That's a big torque motor too!   Rocket | ||

SCHWINN was the one (under their upscale Paramount group) that was involved in the bike. Richard Schwinn, I'm thinking, is still floating around Chicago. I need to give a big shout out (although the guessed facts were wrong) for the most excellent demonstration of why Buell never discusses future product and while I'd never discuss any details. There's always one in every crowd. Erik had nothing to do with any of the bikes, except of course the Schwinn, on this page. | ||

If I remeber correctly Erik also designed the lower fork tube/caliper mount/fender mount for some models of the Vrod and now used on the XR. | ||

Mike Corbin has one... must've gotten it gray market. For some reason he displays it along with all of his other products at shows in the States (saw it at Daytona and Americade). Maybe he's just showing off. In any event, that thing is HUGE compared to an M2 Cyclone. You have to see it in person to appreciate the scale. | ||

The first time I met Court at a Liberty Open House event, my buddy on a Honda ST1300 and I were having a converstaion with him, and this subject came up. Court said something to the same effect, that Erik had worked with a Japanese company in the past - I could have sworn he mentioned the name Honda, but this was a few years ago and I don't want to put words in the man's mouth. He already said it wasn't the RC51, so I'd be at a loss, anyways. How funny would it be if the new Goldwing handles as well at it does because Erik had something to do with the chassis. Wouldn't be the first time he enginieered a 'big bike'. | ||

I've never said what it was but be mindful Erik Buell was in the motorcycle business 20 years before he teamed up with Harley-Davidson. The famed AMERICAN DREAMER (something like a 7 page article) about Erik and his design skills was in CYCLE 7 years before Buell (the company) and Erik teamed up. Erik raced and was very familiar with a number of bikes including Ducati, Yamaha and others. Harley-Davidson didn't "discover" him in February 1983. In addition, by this time Erik has designed and patented a public transportation system, a bicycle and several things you may not be aware of. He was a well known, respected and sought after designer doing contract work. One of the projects he was working on, as an engineers consultant was the VR frame. This, or course, was when he explained that in order for the motor to work a tube frame was out of the question and proposed what we now know as the "fuel in frame" concept. When the team doing the motor screwed up and got helplessly mired the "unusual" frame was an easy place to point fingers and blame. Harley-Davidson was not the only company to have sought out Erik's design talent. Anybody have any interest in a high resolution poster chronically Buell's history? Just waiting on final production numbers from the factory. More will be revealed. . . . | ||
