I just bought a book titled 25 Years of Buell by none other than Court Canfield and Dave Gess. Ordered it from Whitehorse Press.

It is due in June of 2008 and I am looking forward to it in a big way.

Thanks Dave. I think you will enjoy it, it was fun to put together. We wish it was out sooner too but we started way to late it takes a long time to put one together.

I also ordered my copy over the weekend. I hope I can make the trip in July to get everyone to sign the inside cover.

I talked to Court last summer about getting in touch with some of Erik's old employers in western PA. We never had a chance to get together but I hope he had enough material anyway. I was never able to get in touch with a fellow nick named ZERO. He just dropped out of the motorcycle seen several years ago.

It's great living in the same area where it all started and frequenting motorcycle dealerships where Erik worked.

Thanks for writing the book.

Dave

Walter "Zero" Finnegan played a big role in shaping Erik Buell's thinking about motorcycles. You'll read about him in the book.

It was a shame to not get a chance, this go round, to do some more investigative work in the area. Time, time, school, work and frankly having about 7 times more material than you could fit on one book, found us jammed packed and having to make tough decisions.

I'll bet you will enjoy the book, enjoy reading about some of Erik's early experience in the area and the good news is we've got some more chapters (like "33 Special Buells") still in the can to make sure you have more reading later.

You'll enjoy the part where Dave relates the story of Erik leaving a job after a near gun battle.

By the way . . . . the book includes one of the shortest, yet funniest, stories in Buell history. . . . that REALLY tells best in person.

I'm thinking we need to con Erik into telling the story about his addition to his AMA racer at a late night truck stop . . . the first time I heard it I was rolling on the floor.

Yeah . . we may need to have a big campfire at the farm and a night of Buell story telling . . . there is NO other manufacturer like this!

Got the new Spring catalog from Whitehorse Gear today, and looked up the book. It's in there!
I'm glad I ordered mine last month, the price went up a couple of bucks.
Now, I just have to wait for it to arrive...

Anybody get the spring Fuell yet? Mine arrived and they ran a nice preview of the book. Give a little taste of the pictures and the stories we tell.

Nice looking issue as usual.

Dave, I really enjoyed that issue. The pictures and text were great and left me wanting more.

As an added bonus a couple of our local riders in Colorado Springs were featured. I had the pleasure of working on Scott's S1 recently.

I saw it! It got me looking forward to the book. I loved the pictures Dave...

So what was the drawing on the drafting board that (a very young Erik?) was working on? Was that the Barton square 4 motor? I think I saw overhead cams, but everything else looked... well... square. I have nose prints all over that magazine now...

That is indeed the square four RW engine. there is pretty much detail (for Tri-X that is) in that negative.

(a very young Erik?) Yes indeed. When I look at these pictures it is hard to believe how young we were. Erik certainly puts to lie the old "youth is wasted on the young" he used all his youthful energy, enthusiasm and optimism to make this thing work. There were certainly times when most of us would have jumped off and been done with it.

Wow... looking at the picture, I assumed it was your medium format camera. Nice work.

I was always torn between Tri-X and T-Max. T-Max could be pushed further, but Tri-X at 400 ASA just worked really well...

Thanks for the rest of the story... too cool! I am *so* looking forward to the book, and even more to threads here it will trigger...

Bill I understand the latest 400 ASA black and white is just amazing. Yes Kodak continues to improve film technology and yes film still out performs digital in just about every way EXCEPT speed of access to the final image.

I may have to dust off the Leica and burn some frames to see what it can do. I have a buddy with a lab so I can get it processed and printed.

film still out performs digital

That's changing.

Dave and I always have Buell owners covered . . . between his Leica film and my Nikon digital . . . little gets past us.

Oddly enough . . . the only thing I really get good pictures of is Dave!

By the way . . . I've been shooting (and the last great picture I got of Dave was on) Fuji 160 portrait film and the results are spectacular.

Best photo I've ever caught on it was Erik's boys and the Buell umbrella girls at Daytona. It was a race, when the gals appeared, between Dave and I to see which of us could stop shaking first and get the photo. My convulsing finger inadvertently hit the shutter.

: )

You nailed it with your lab reference Dave. I *could* get some amazing results with Tri-x or T-Max, but I often didn't. There were just *so* many opportunities for defect, both when getting the picture and when trying to do the complicated chemistry experiment trying to get the photos out the other end.

I now have a Fuji F31FD digital. It is a $200 camera that fits in a shirt pocket, will take more then 350 pictures on a single battery charge on a single memory card.

It shoots images at 1600 ASA that look better then my old color film at ASA 400, and will shoot at ASA 3200 and look better then film at 1600 ASA... assuming I could even find anybody to push process it anymore.

And it will shoot 15 minutes of 640x480 video (also with great light sensitivity) if I want to go that route.

It can't touch the quality of a low ASA film in a Leica or a Nikon, much less anything large format. It cant even touch the low end Nikon or Cannon DSLRs. But the camera that gets the best shots is the camera you bring with you... and a $200 shirt pocket camera goes a LOT more places then a $1500 DSLR the size of a cantaloupe.

What breaks my heart about the Fuji is the optics. They came up with an image sensor and DSP chip that can wring a usable 1600 ASA out of the camera, then they go and slap an F2.8 lens on it. Arghhhh!!!!

If only they would sell that Fuji with something like an 28mm or 35mm F1.2 or F1.7 lens, still shooting at 1600 and 3200 ASA. Then it really would be the modern Leica.

But back on topic, the digital isn't as good as the film when everything goes right, but there is so little that goes wrong between my camera and my laptop. I shudder to think about the amount of time I would have to spend in the darkroom to get just one good print... and how hard it was to keep negatives intact over time. Having a friend with a lab would help.

Not to say that if I was somewhere and somebody handed me a Leica or a nice Nikon full of film, that I wouldn't start immediately drooling and proceed to have a *great* time...

Cool! A Leica thread and a Colt 1911 thread on the same board on the same day. Ya'll are weird, and I fit right in...

...12.1 megapixel for five grand...

What in the world would someone want one of those for when you've got to shrink the crap out of it to fit in this hole in the wall?

Reminds me of the ol' ex-military/realtor guy who liked his TeleType 33 (33 bps) because he could read it as the listings came out.

Shhhhhhh. . . . D3x is on the way at 24.1 MP FULL FRAME.

I just got my first photo engagement, for May 8th, today. Suppose I should post my "heels and stocking" show here?

: )

I'm displaying my "Textures" next month in a "pit" in a building in SoHo.

By the way . . . I'll be shooting the May 8th show with the D3 . . . I'll let you know how it goes.

Hmmmmm . . . I guess I could carry a Colt M1911A1.

We are sickos!

One of the fun things about doing the book project was looking at some of the "old" stuff Dave did on film. It's exquisite. I think the next book needs to be a National Geographic style photo essay!

Go ahead and post those 'leggy' shots, I'll accept them as my birthday present (seeing as how you will be shooting them on my birthday, it works out rather well)...
