First time at the Manhattan Dinosaur? I've been to all three:

The original in Syracuse:

Syracuse Dinosaur

The Dinosaur in Rochester:

Rochester Dinosaur

And the newest one in Manhattan:

NYC Dinosaur

By the way, when you get back from Liberty on Saturday, come to the Lady Liberty Ride in Manhattan. Block party at Hogs and Heifers, with the food provided by the Manhattan Dinosaur. For more information see: http://www.ladylibertyride.com/index2.php

I'll just be doing the block party as a hundred mile parade run isn't my idea of fun. I should be there around 1:30 or so if not earlier. This was Gasper Trama's charity, so I'm trying to make it every year if I can in his memory.

I didn't even know about the Dinosaur. I'd been eating at "Rack n' Soul" on 109th and Broadway and was thrilled to find the Dinosaur . . . . located like 3 blocks from campus. I've turned into a regular and they're happy to indulge my picky diet.

From what I understand, the Syracuse store started as a roadside BBQ stand by three bikers. It just took off from there. Sometimes you can find their sauces at your local grocery store. I'm a big fan of the Wango Tango Habanero Sauce myself.

Oh man, that is my favorite form of food! I eat BBQ like 2 or 3 times a week. Mmmmm.

I stopped after class, about 10:00pm last night, at Rack n' Soul and was pretty dissapointed.

I've got Blue Smoke in my gunsights to try next. Reputed to be "Best in NYC" and combines BBQ and Jazz Improv. . . . my kinda place.

Hey No-rice; send me your mailing address. I'll send you a bottle. My e-mail is: nmweast at verizon dot net.
I've only been to the original Dinosaur in Syracuse, and the NYC location. I was a little apprehensive when we went to the New York location, but my fears were groundless. The food was as good as the Syracuse restaurant. However,I still prefer the Syracuse location because I can go a block away to the Mohawk Power & Light building and see some of the most amazing Art Deco in existence.
Court, you'd use all the memory in your camera if you ever saw that building.

There are people in my club who swear by the Blue Smoke, but then they've never been to the Dinosaur. On the other hand, I've never been to the Blue Smoke myself... so I'm interested in what you'd have to say.

Crusty: Several YEARS of going to the Syracuse Dinosaur and somehow I've missed that building. Guess I'll have to look for it next year...

I don't know if you made it to the Lady Liberty Ride or not on Sunday. I looked for you, but I also left early in order to get home in time for the 6:00 broadcast of the Japan MotoGP (Congratulations, Casey Stoner and Loris Capirossi! A perfect day for Ducati).

$20 for the block party got you all you can eat pulled pork sandwiches from the Dinosaur (you should've seen the line by the time I left) along with cole slaw and barbecued beans. I did mine "Carolina style" with the cole slaw on the sandwich. Yummmm!!

We're still waiting for your evaluation of the Blue Smoke!

Good point . . . I need to find time to do that. I suspect it'll be at least a couple weeks out given the upcoming schedule.

The good news is I'll likely be eating at Arthur Bryant's before I hit Blue Smoke . . . so I'll be in excellent form to judge it against one of the best in the nation.

I think I feel another Road Trip for BBQ coming on...

I've been to the Syracuse location numerous times. Not too rare for me and buddy to take a 5-hour one-way back road only trip out there just for lunch.

I'll have to give the NYC location a shot...I'll be there next week.

I thought Texas was the land of BBQ?

Texas, although many would argue, is not the home of BBQ.

There are a host of states, notably places like Virginia, that lay claim to all sorts of BBQ lore. . . Kansas City seems to emerge but all have some merit.

If you are stuck in Dallas all is not lost however. . . . it's just harder to find.

When we opened the C. L. Canfield offices one of the first things I did was set out to find the great local food.

Don't tell them where you heard it, but if you want BBQ id Dallas you need to head to the seedy part of Main Street and go to Mac's.

They are only open 3 hours a day and you'll likely never set foot in a more run down place or eat better BBQ.

And you thought I was just a shallow Ivy League academic.

I thought you were just a construction worker!

Try Cooper's in Llano, TX for some outstanding barbecue. It gets the Road_Thing 5-Star rating.

Well.....I am a construction worker (as soon as this campus protest is over today)and a hungry one looking at that photo. . . where is that place? Any where near Houstosity?

My Uncle, the Astronaut, is getting some sort of award from NASA in November and I'm lobbying to attend and scam a tour of the center before he retires. . . that grub looks like it would meet my high construction worker standards!

Llano is on the other side of Austin, couple hundred miles from Houston.

But if you're in the Houston area, I can hook you up with some good local barbecue at Otto's. It's a local landmark and the favorite of your old buddy G.H.W. Bush.

I owe you a few nights' worth of hospitality, too. When is the November gig? I'm going to be out of town for a good part of that month--Argentina to shoot doves for a week, then New Orleans for the Spousal Unit's high school reunion.

Now I have one more thing to do. Drive down to Cooper's and get some BBQ. Thanks for that tid bit. After living in Kansas and Virginia, I am trying to rate Texas versus those states. Kansas BBQ is more flavorful, while VA tends to have more of a bite to it. Now the Carolina's have a whole different thing going on. They use vintager heavily down there. But that is all for a different tread. Man I love BBQ.

Well . .. if you are from Kansas, you've had the best.

I was never a fan of standing in line at Arthur Bryant's but I was always up for jumping on the FLH and heading to Guy and Mae's.

Texas has some good places, but Mac's on Main Street in Dallas is my favorite.
