Court,

As I tell my client and friends. Not broke yet. Actually, since both labor and real-estate prices are relatively low in OK most everything but manufacturing is going hot right now.

If ODOT can get the funding figured out we will need about 200 Civil Engineers in the next decade or so. Hmmm, I'm a Civil right?

At the moment almost every Engineering firm is looking to hire, but can't find the employees that want to move to OK at the local pay rates. The Cost of Living Index is about 84-88 so salaries are lower. Let's see, NY is what, 125-130?

Things are definitely looking good here in the sticks.

Court:

Could you put us in touch with someone at the factory about the correct way to lower the Uly?

Bought one in January, never could get "happy" with the height. Sold it to a fellow who really wanted it.

Need to have a Buell, but need to have the feet on the ground.

Thanks

Try an XB12RS? I doubt the factory will offer any advice on lowering the suspension of any of their bikes short of converting to an existing "Low" model like from and XB9S to an XB9SL. Too much liability involved.

The factory does offer a low seat for the Uly, and you could back the preload all the way out to minimize seat height.

If you really wanted to tackly modifying the suspension beyond that you are looking at a set of reduced travel modified/custom springs for the forks and rear shock. You'd end up with reduced suspension travel, but even after lowering the stock suspension by an inch and a half, you'd still end up with near 4.5 to 5 inches of travel.

Al at American Sport Bike or one of our other suspension savy sponsors might be able to help. If not then try the folks at Traxxion Dynamics.

i've been staring at the uly's on the floor and can not figure out why a person would not be able to throw a set of regular xb forks and rear shock on it. or if really in need even the low suspension.

Old_Rice

We've considered the same thing. Looked a good bit last evening at a Long, and seem to remember that the frame is the same between the Uly and the Long. Would seem as though the rear sub frame off the Uly should be a bolt on to the Long.

The result would seem to be the same, lower seat height.

Blake:

Tried the low seat, it was better but still no cigar. Biggest issue was getting off when the bike was on unstabel/off camber ground. Right knee just too stiff to easily swing over the tail with the "hump" at the back of either the regular or low seat.

Have thought about a Sargent seat on the Buell seat pan, which is supposed to be an additional 1" lower than the Buell Low Seat.

Can't be with out a Buell, but don't want to trash a great bike due to my physical limitation.

Thanks

You are more than welcome Tom. Let us know what you end up doing and how it works out. I have a feeling that there are a number of others contemplating the very same issue. Who will be the first to do a Uly Low conversion? : )

I'm a big fan of Junior Johnson. Saw an excellent documentary about him not too long ago. His candidness was amazing and extremely refreshing in this day.

Keep up the good work on the NASCAR front. Y'all are for sure gittin'er done. That's more than a lot of academicians can say.

Thanks

I spoke with Mr. Johnson two (2) weeks ago at the Nextel Cup test in Charlotte NC.

He reminded me of the last time he and I had talked, about five (5) years ago. He said back then, "He$$ Tom, I don't need a computer to tell me my cars aren't running good.""

How's that for a memory and what a quote!!!

BTW Fireman Jim and I are square.

Thanks

Tom

Court,
I was wondering why the timing on the xb12x has almost no advance at hot idle. As soon as you give it some throttle the timing advances considerably. I would think that some more advance at idle would help cool the combustion chambers and help the cooling system out. The reason for my concern is that I had to retard the timing about three degrees to stop some relentless pinging and with the system showing 1 or 0 degree of advance that means I am a 2 -3 ATDC at idle. The result is that my pipes got that Uly orange glow going on. Any comments?

Davo - Mine glow w/o any timeing changes. You have to turn the lights out to see it though.

The advance curve is formulated for optimum performance as governed by EPA emissions regulations. I think you answered your own question as to why there is not much if any advance at hot idle. Detonation?

Yes , but many EPA regulated automotive systems have a great deal of advance at idle. Many cars in the 80's even had vacuum advance hoses going to manifold vacuum instead of ported vacuum. This resulted in a high degree of advance at idle to keep the heads cool and it also gave the idling engine time to burn up the mix during a no load situation and therefor no knock situation.

I hate asking questions that reveal my ignorance. But I'm going to do it anyway.

Am I right in thinking:

1 - Advance means firing before TDC.
2 - Increasing Advance means firing earlier.
3 - Increasing Advance prevents deatonation.

Jl:

1) Yes, that is, I think most spark ignition engines do fire their plugs BTDC. "Advance", in my mind anyway, refers to how far BTDC.

2) Yes.

3) No, generally it's just the opposite.

I guess I was being too subtle. ;)

As noted by Loki, Court has been somewhat voluntarily assimilated. He has had dual citizenship in the past but now has apparently decided to emigrate for his own reasons. I would assume he will be at various places in Wisconsin, but as far as his travel plans? I wouldn't place any bets on his departure time based on his arrival time as he has a known tendancy to ride long distances in reasonably short lengths of time on even shorter notice at times. If he plans to be in E.T. by Thursday evening he might still be seen in NYC on Wednesday evening or even possibly sometime early early Thursday morning.

But I digress. Life goes on. Friends are. 'nuff said.

Court You seem to be the man everyone says I should talk to on this. I had a plug blow out of my front head and no one seems to want to fix it under any kind of warranty. I bought the bike in August of last year and it has 5500 miles on it and the dealer gave it back to me half torn apart with what looks to me to be an attempt to heli coil it that went wrong any advise?

Indeed history is doomed to be repeated by those who do not study it.

Speaking of history, I haven't seen Court post in a long time.

Where's Court, did I miss something?

Court can be found over on pacborg. There was a falling-out between Blake and Court.

Let's hope it was just temporary.

Correction:

Court can be found at Sacborg.

I do know that he is taking e-mails from folks with questions.

You could try his Badweb profile and click the message icon to send him an e-mail.

I knew which borg he meant : )

I didn't particularly need to seek him out, I just wondered why I hadn't seen him around. I heard a rumor at the lookout this morning that there had been a parting of ways or what have you. Just lookin to lend credence to that, and now it has been done.

I hope it blows over, because sacborg doesn't interest me in the least.
