Matt one of the things I don't understand about everyone raving about Moto2 is it is just a spec class. For years all I ever heard about AMA flat track racing was "It is nothing but a bunch of Harley's racing.

I think that there are few big differences:

1. Moto 2 IS a spec class, but is a world championship that uses state of the art chassis technology and the best young riders in the world (mostly). It just happens to use identical Honda supplied engines (the engines are actually supplied by a 3rd party tuner not directly from Honda). It could just as easily run Yamaha, kawasaki, Suzuki or even Triumph engines if they had bothered to tender for the contract when it was first suggested. Honda were the ONLY factory that tendered for the engine contract remember.

2. Moto 2 has provided some of the best 7 closest racing we have seen for some time in world championship road racing. With MotoGP being pretty boring it is good to see young up and coming riders fighting for a championship.

3. Mile flat track racing is a US based sport and doesn't really translate outside the USA unfortunately. There is a growing short track scene outside the US, but Harley racing doesn't really figure in it. Most road racing fans want to see close racing and Moto2 provides just that regardless of engine used.

4. Moto2 replaced the old 250 series, which was in effect a spac class anyway. if you wanted to win you needed to run a factory Aprilia or you were toast. The costs involved in that were so ludricrous that the series was dying on its feet. Moto2 has provided a spectacular and affordable alternative feeder series to MotoGP.

5. The fact that Marc Marquez & Stefan Bradl have adjusted so quickly to MotoGP shows that the formula for Moto2 is about right so far. I'm pretty sure that both Scott Redding and Pol Espagaro will be just as quick to adapt.

As for Silverstone...Spectacular racing in all 3 classes and a great MotoGP race. Pity that Cal couldn't do the business at his home GP, but after his crash fest this weekend I'm surprised he even had a bike left to race on! Scott Redding was great and now has a decent lead again in Moto2 that he can defend for the rest of the season hopefully.

With all 3 World superbike/supersport races being won by Brits is was a good weekend altogether : )

She loves Jorge. Me, I like Marc. Seeing somebody that young dominating the class is exciting to me. Jorge's victory was well earned.

There was something of a contrast in marshalling abilities this weekend.
At Silverstone the guys picking Cal and his bike out of the dirt were instantly aware of an incoming Marquez and avoided what could have been horrific injuries for both rider and marshals.
At the Nurburgring the marshal was still holding a green flag after Sandi's bike had exploded on the entry to a fast left hander. Rea got away with a broken leg after hitting a section of wall not covered with air fencing and Camier came very close to hitting him while on the ground after going down on the same oil spill.

He won because of a huge effort and riding out of his skin, but mostly because of a last corner mistake by Marquez and a dislocated shoulder. The Yamaha really is outclassed by Honda now and not capable of winning unless Lorenzo has a stunning weekend like he did his week and Honda riders make mistakes. Even the satellite Hondas are causing problems for Yamaha now, which is different to the beginning of the year. With a huge gap to Marquez Lorenzo will have to kidnap the rookie and lock him in the cleaners cupboard for a few months to stop him taking the title now!

Moto 2 and 1 should be eliminated from the motgoGP circuit and replaced with SBK.

Are you nuts! What would SBK bring that Moto2 doesn't offer? Moto 2 is the best racing spectacle of the three championship series at the moment, and has been since its inception. Moto3 (or 1 as you apparently like to call it) is in the early stages and needs the rules to be tweaked to close the huge loophole that KTM & Mahindra have found, but it is still a competitive class that looks to be as good or better than the previous 125 series in breeding young riders. Both Moto 3 and Moto2 are the logical feeder series for MotoGP, SBK is just a production championship that is getting more dumbed down next year so will be an even bigger gulf from MotoGP standards soon.

In future, if you need the right passport to get into MotoGP that passport could well be Indonesian/Thai/Malaysian rather than Spanish as is the current fashion...

Yet another Asian rider has been pushed into a full time Moto2 ride with little experience and even less talent, but that doesn't seem to worry DORNA or the teams scrabbling for new money from Asia.

Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman (a name that nobody outside Malaysia has ever heard of)
will be the fourth Asia Road Racing trained rider on the Moto2 grid joining Thailand's Thitipong Warokorn as well as Indonesia's Doni Tata Pradita and Rafid Topan Sucipto (The latter 3 usually propping up the bottom of the grid and around 6 seconds off the pace!).

I feel sorry for truly talented riders like Gino Rea who cannot get a ride in a full time Moto2 team but are constantly overlooked in favour of 'pay as you' go riders emerging from new markets with rich sponsors : ( How long before we have another richly sponsored mobile chicane wobbling around at the back of the MotoGP field?

Boy, I can't wait to hear that idiot Ralph Shaheen trying to pronounce THOSE names on Fox Sports 1 here in the States. You guys over there in Europe get spared that pain.

It's worse when the races are raced here in the States. Then, the world feed is pre-empted for Shaheen and Scott Russell (who at least knows a little something about motorcycles) but I do enjoy hearing Gavin and Nick over them. One advantage of actually being at the races in Indianapolis is that we hear the world feed at the track, not the US feed they hear on Fox Sports.

well, if you wnat the sport to grow you have to give opportunity to other countries and those countries are going to want to cheer for their home rider, not some british guy or American.
just look at soccer, korea and japan and even the USA, were always the joke of the teams, but after a couple of generations these teams are to be respected.
i expect the same about the asian riders, given an opportunity they can conquer like the europeans have for centuries.

I am not disputing that motorcycle racing needs to be more global, nor do I resent any new nationalities or riders entering the series....Providing of course they are up to the standard of world class competition. Unfortunately in the case of the riders named above (and others...) they are clearly nowhere near the required standard or they would not languish so far back in every session.

A couple of years honing skills in the Spanish series would help, but so long as they have rich sponsors they seem able to just jump in to the 'elite' class and get in the way every week (or run into other riders as happened at Silverstone TWICE over the weekend!).

Well, never mind my exile from BadWeB these past few years. I've still read this topic, likely word for word, even if at times it's meant playing catch up after months of not looking in.

Your passion, knowledge, and understanding, and the info you share that no doubt comes at times from your connections and contacts from within this great sport of motorcycle racing, are what keeps me tuned in here. Mathew Birt doesn't do so bad a job for MCN, but you knock him into a cocked hat mate. Thanks for keeping it real and your opinions as grounded and unbiased as they could be, being a Rossi fanboy as you are, just like me too, lol.

Back on subject.........(although baiting is tempting...)

It seems that money has talked yet again in Moto2.

Toni Elias has been unsurprisingly and unceremoniously sacked by his Bluesens Moto2 team following dire results since he won the inaugaral Moto2 series back in 2010. No surprise there and about time really....

However, the part I have issues with is his replacement.

Argentine rider Ezequiel Iturrioz, currently racing in the Spanish CEV Moto2 championship, will replace Elias for the rest of this season. Iturrioz is currently 13th in the Spanish championship, his best result an eighth place in Aragon, which makes me suspect he has arrived at the back door of the team truck armed with a large carpet bag full of cash, and very little talent to back it up with.

Surely a team as big as Bluesens (one of the biggest in the paddock and present in all 3 GP classes!) can afford to employ a properly talented young rider without requiring huge amounts of money from him?

I despair....: (

I would suspect that Elias may have jumped at the same time as being pushed, as it was announced at the same time that he will take over from Fabrizio in the Red devils WSB team for the rest of the season. Fabrizio has 'left' because of poor results but has immediately been snapped up to replace the injured Johnny Rea at Pata Honda until the end of this year.

Bluessens had a great opportuntiy to try a young rider with the necessary skill to run at the front of the Moto2 series (Gino Rea springs to mind but there are plenty of others who deserve a shot and who have put the work in and shown some good results in the past) and get a good grounding ready for next season. Instead they fall back on the old 'pay per ride' solution which I found very disapointing, especially from a well heeled and well supported team like them.

I would think there has been political pressure from Dorna to get an Argentine rider in at least one class before their first GP next year, but surely that should be based on results first?

Kind of similar situation to the F1 debacle of Sauber announcing next years 17 year old Russian driver Sergei Sirotkin before he even has the required superlicence, and while he has achieved nothing in the lower racing classes. No coincidence that Sauber have just been rescued by Russian money of course, and Sergei Sirotkins father is a director of the company supplying the money to the team. Hmmm.......I wonder if there is any connection there?

I heard a while ago that Ducati and Pramac were very unhappy with the situation, and wanted a firm answer on the 'Spies situation' one way or another. Turning up at every other race intending to 'see how it goes in practice' is no good to team, sponsors or rider at this level.

To drop him for the rest of the year probably made more sense 8 weeks ago than now, but better late than never I suppose.

Now the team can concentrate on getting a rider to fill in for the final 6 rounds without constant specualtion about if or when Ben will return to action.

I doubt that we will see Ben back inMotoGP any time soon though, on a Ducati or otherwise.

Lorenzo got his "seamless" transmission. Let's see if it really is worth a second per lap. It would tickle me to see Rossi and Lorenzo on top this weekend.
