8% tolerance? That's HUGE. Jens, I assume there is quite a bit of dialog/data from your racing experience that goes back to Erik Buell Racing, yes? Were you folks really conservative when you started?

The AMA doesn't tech tear-down the engine prior to races, only if a competitor contests or a team wins or are chosen for a random tear-down inspection. If KTM didn't tell the AMA officials about the 8%, the AMA would not know about it. So maybe it's the same as the IDM bike, but paired back down to proper parts sizing. |

FYI: An 8% increase to bore (D) and stroke (L) would increase displacement (V = L*PI*D2/4) by over 25%! |

Maybe the 1190 is the first real deal regarding the rulebooks... I can tell you there is just not the power at Erik Buell Racing to develop two different powertrains. You can buy on Monday what Erik Buell Racing raced on Sunday. Regarding the results this weekend, I wrote somewhere else, a new bike needs time....
The KTMīs are over 3 years multimilliondollar developments, going last weekend at Salzburgring with over 300 km/h uphill only beaten by a S 1000 RR because Martin Bauer had a really bad weekend. If KTM have at Mid Ohio the Magneti Marelli engineers and enough tracktime to find the right mapping than they are very very hard to beat.
That 8% is unfair, but it was part of the deal to get KTM into the IDM series. Question is if this advantages are agreed with the AMA or if they race there a shopwindow based bike. Or whatever... (-: |

We will see, the KTMīs in the IDM are close to WSBK level. A new team with new riders, new AMA rule bikes loaded with electronic, at their first race.

KTM has explicitly declared they will run in only three AMA superbike races this year, so I don't think there is much risk they will win or need a teardown.
They were fine looking and fine running bikes, credit where credit is due.
I liked the 1190 much better in every regard though...
The KTM tractor trailer was ridiculously huge and expensive... With the amount of $$ they are obviously pouring in the program, they *better* be doing really well.
I was expecting Erik Buell Racing to be there in a rusty white van, but they actually had a couple of nice looking smaller trailers. |

KTM came "loaded for bear" . . . . I'm not that well versed on their bike. I will say . . it sounds great and photographs great.
Judging by the way Geoff caught Fillmore today about lap 3 before the tires went soft and his lap times went from the 1:27's to 1:29's . . . we are in for a fun year.
Nothing elicits great performance like a worthy adversary.
