BUELL RACERS DOMINATE AT DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY SPORTSMAN SWEEP
Exciting Lightning Final And Pro Thunder Pole And Podiums

MILWAUKEE, WI (March 12, 2001) - Buell racers literally dominated the two opening race weekends at Daytona International Speedway in the classes they competed in with the Formula USA series on March 2-4 and AMA professional road race series on March 7-11.

Buell pilots captured the top four positions of the newly created F-USA Pro-Am Sportsman National class, which pits 800cc liquid twins, unlimited air-cooled twins, 1200cc triples and unlimited singles in head-to-head competition. Leading the charge was Jeffrey Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, on his Buell sponsored by Appleton Buell/Hoban Brothers. He was followed by Leo Venega of Miami, FL; Christopher Decelles of Londonderry, NH and John Costa of Miami, FL. All four Buell racers scorched the Daytona course finishing first through fourth, setting the tone for the new multi-brand series.

Michael Barnes of Boca Raton, FL, aboard the Kosco Buell/Innovative Motorcycle Research fuel-injected X-1, captured the pole and the win in the first round of the F-USA Buell Lightning Series, a spec-class featuring 95hp maximum and 390lb. minimum limits on Buell race bikes. Barnes topped Tripp Nobles of Macon, GA and Sportsman class winner Johnson in a wet race. It was the first victory for a fuel-injected Buell in the Lightning Series.

Mike Ciccotto of Sebastian, FL, aboard the Hal's Performance Advantage Buell snared the pole position in the AMA Pro Thunder series opener and Buell racers took three of the top four qualifying spots. In the final, Buell racers Ciccotto, Nobles and Dave Estok of New Smyrna Beach, FL battled for the lead with Ducati-mounted defending series champion Jeff Nash. Estok and his Tilley's Buell finished third, while Ciccotto finished second, just edged by Nash for the win by .196 of a second.

MILWAUKEE, WI (May 7, 2001) - In a pre-race interview, Mike Ciccotto told his competitors exactly what he planned to do in the Buell Pro Thunder final at Sears Point: pass every one of them and win the race. Some may not have believed he could win from his last row start, but Ciccotto knew he could, said he would, and did.

"My Hal's H-D Buell handled like it was on rails," said Ciccotto from the top of the podium on Sunday. "I want to thank everyone at Buell and Hal's Performance Advantage for their support."

Following his second place finish at Daytona, the Sears Point win puts Ciccotto and his Hal's Buell on top of the Buell Pro Thunder points standings.

The Hal's Harley-Davidson Performance Advantage team took possession of their Firebolt just five days before the race, but Ciccotto proved the new bike will be a formidable contender this season.

"This Firebolt is incredible. It's our first weekend out on it and when we get it sorted out, it's going to be really tough for anyone to beat us," said Ciccotto. "We had to run DOTs in the race because we didn't have a good set up for slicks yet."

"It was a good day for Buell. The new Firebolt finished second with street tires and a tail light and the proven X-1 was right behind in third," said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer of Buell Motorcycle Company.

Loudon, NH (June 16, 2002) - Eric Wood rode the new Buell Firebolt XB9R to its first national roadrace victory in the Formula USA Honda Pro Oils Sportbike final held at New Hampshire International Speedway. The race was Wood's first outing aboard the Kosco Buell/Innovative Motorcycle Research Firebolt, and the first appearance of the team in the highly competitive horsepower and weight restricted class.

"This was a great start for the Firebolt," said Wood, of Mansfield, Mass. "We just got this bike two weeks ago and ran a club race last weekend to warm it up. The Firebolt has a lot of potential and we're only going to get stronger as the season goes on."

Facing a 45-bike field filled with Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki riders, Wood was running a strong second when race leader Scott Greenwood (Suzuki) faltered on lap 19 of the 20-lap feature. Wood stormed into the lead and beat Suzuki riders Michael Barnes and Larry Pegram to the checkered flag.

"The Buell's tractability and drive off the corners really worked for me at Loudon," said Wood. "In some turns I was able to put the Buell in places where the four-cylinder bikes couldn't go. The Firebolt has the chassis dynamics of a Grand Prix bike, and the smooth power delivery of the V-Twin engine was really easy on the back tire. As the race worn on, I think my tire was holding up better and I was able to pull away from the field."

"The Firebolt was designed to be the best backroad bike ever," said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of Buell Motorcycle Company. "Loudon is a technically challenging track, just like the backroads we designed the Firebolt to dominate on. My congratulations go out to Eric Wood and the entire Kosco Buell and Innovative Motorcycle Research Team."
