The wifey and I are soon to be nose-deep into Buell XB roadracing, and are putting together parts lists for our scooters. We want slipper clutches!!! I've heard the XBRR units will bolt on to XB's with no probs, but don't know if that includes '07 models. WELL? DO THEY? AND WHERE CAN WE ACQUIRE TWO OF THEM?

Been lurking around here for a while, now, and you guys rock. Thanks from a couple of newbie racers looking to make Buell a serious threat on the track.-

Looks like Dave handed it off to Andy so either go to the sponsor section and go to Appleton H-D/Buell

or

For all your parts and Buell needs, call 866-757-1651 and ask for Andy in the Sales dept.

Tangumans,

I can get you the slipper clutches. If I remember correctly, they run about 1200 each.

You'll also need Alto clutch plates and Redline ATF for the primary.

The correct springs for the slippers JUST came in at Buell Racing.

I will get you the exact pricing when I get to the shop (Cycle Connection) tomorrow.

Hey Nick! Good to hear another Buell Race effort fireing up..

OK, not meaning to hi-jack the thread, but what's your current plan for 'first race'? Summit? VIR? And are you planning on running CCS, ASRA, WERA? Just curious, because there's a pretty tight group of racers and supporters that will always be able to throw a little help your way when need be..

I'll be looking for ya.. with my hat on.

2 Questions:
1) What exactly is a 'slipper clutch' and why would you want to spend $1200 on it if you're just getting into racing? (from my experience there will be more important things to be concerned about).

2) Does anybody (or can point to where the info is) know the rpm limit and/or valve float for a completely stock XB9 head?

Hal's Harley is installing one right now on my 06 XB12R track bike. They said it was a direct bolt-in. Since there is no difference from 06 to 07 it will also work on the 07.

Josh is right about the Redline ATF fluid.

Yes, Duc riders think they're gold snot, but when an over-horsed American thunderbike has something super racy like a slipper clutch it puts the monarchy into a tizzy.

Why would we want to spend that kind of money? Because we can.

We're moving to Denver pretty soon, so we'll be training for MRA events. We are, literally, brand new in the cycle racing scene, so our plans are just forming. We're not sure which divisions we want to blow up first, but the wifey's seriously into destroying the biggest and best as soon as possible.

BTW, in case anybody is wondering, we're going to have NRHS Performance in Denver build our machines, with lots and lots of goodies from Trojan Horse Racing. The plan so far: 2 XB12R hooligan machines that go like poop but handle like razors. Simple 'nuff!

Well, Wikipedia told me all I need to know (for now) about slipper clutches and I can see their benefit on racing a high torque twin. I thought it was an honest question that could have been simply answered !~

But seriously Can any of you XB racers tell me the valve float and/or rpm limit of a stock XB9 head? Or point me to the XB thread to ask this question? The story behind the question is that I lost a valve guide on my modified XB head and threw the stocker on because I didnt have enough time to repair the head before race day. I'd like to know how far I can twist it up before it 'breaks'.

Erik,

I'd ask one of the engine builders here or on other boards.

Duga told me that if I kept revs to 7500 for the 6-hour race, the short stroke motor would last forever. I talked to Bilansky and he recommended that I run the redline to 8000 because it is really easy to get pulled along faster when drafting.

Out of my sheer ignorance and an email from Duga, I'd think 7500 is a safe number for the top end.

Thanks, Steve. I'd figured 7500 was safe and if Duga says so, thats all I need to know!

Badweb has been a very helpful place in the past, but after posting this question 4 times and at different threads, Slaughter's was the only online response I've gotten (the only other response was offboard by someone seeking the same info). Its not like I was asking for some big power secret. I hope others coming to Badweb get a better response.

For the valve float, keep the stock redline and you will have no problem. If you change to more agressive cams, you will NEED different valve springs though.

For the slipper clutch feedback, it really depends on how hard you ride. If you are the guy who will bang down a couple gears at a time coming into a corner, the slipper will be a great thing. The normal clutch will let the rear tire chatter and slide all over the place.

BTW here are the prices for the clutch setup:

Slipper clutch $1250 MSRP $1125 BWB
Alto plates $132 MSRP $118.80 BWB
Adjuster tool $85 (my markup is only $2.50 on this so I can't discount, sorry)

If you'd like to order these, please send me an email to jcox@cycleconnectionh-d.com.

Gear, rather than bang on about asking your question four times, only a week or three ago, the slipper clutch question was asked (again), and answered.

The BadWeB isn't a 24 hour manned Q&A forum, but most everyone tries to help where and when they can, but there is another really neat function that's easy to use, and will most likely answer your question. Type the words 'slipper clutch' into the search engine. This time I did it for you. Here's Matt from Trojan's simple answer to your question

we're going to have NRHS Performance in Denver build our machines

Good luck! Bad choice.

I know there's some bad blood with NRHS and I won't kick the sleeping dog -

- but -

I've had my original race motor including all the head work done about 3 years ago and just had new headwork done, and will have the XB-Blast done by them. No worries, no concerns.

I read that the head chef was taking a back seat, having separated certain aspects of that company, wanting to spend more time playing with a CNC machine.

One could be forgiven for wandering how many times a good reputation can be bought and sold, and still remain a good reputation.

Me, I'd discount the top 3 and just aim for the top. This way there can be no uncertainty.

Thanks Rocket. Actually the slipper clutch was just an off hand question and I really didnt care that much (or I would've done the search). But thank you for the link.
I did do a search about the XB head, came up without the answer I was looking for and began asking the question in different threads a while ago. I was hoping someone who raced could give me the benefit of their experience.

While the Badweb is not a 24 hour manned Q & A forum, if you go to the Thumper side, you'll find we do a pretty good job of fielding every question asked whether it be lame or complex, whether we can answer it or not.

As far as NRHS goes I've had some quality work done by them but I prefer to use and promote Badweb sponsors as they help support this site.(some of whom have had strong ties to nrhs and others quite as capable).

Sorry for straying off topic!

I agree. But sponsorship is neither a condition of, an endorsement of or a guarantee of any thing other than your check cleared.

That's it, nothing more.

For the record, I'd have no hesitation having Wes Brown do work. In addition to being a nice person, he's incredibly talented.

Wowsah! If I'd said something like, "You know, Erik Buell is a pansy and his motorcycles are for gayboy wannabees," I think the response to my NRHS comment would be just barely more vociferous. But, hey, you know, the scooters ain't built yet, and I'm glad to hear from more experienced and wiser performance shop customers. Dang, did I just open a huge can o' worms? Call me Pandora, but when I'm getting ready to invest about 25,000 - 30,000 dollars worth of scratch into modifications alone, then I'm more than open to anecdotal as well as hard evidence. So then...who's the best, and who ain't? Money is no object with these two sleds, so costs like shipping across states don't skeer me. Bring on da' expenses!!!

Do you know the fastest way to make a small fortune in racing?

Start with a large one.

Anyway... NRHS is good stuff. So are Cycle Rama and Revolution Performance. I really doubt that you can go wrong with any of them.

Tangumans,

Serious racers tend to work with people in their own neiborhood. So live somewhere near the fast people. Geographic considerations will always matter when racing as time is your biggest enemy. Being able to carry your parts and/or bikes to your tuner is invaluable. Questions are best dealt with in person than over the phone.

I've done two Buells like that. The last one was featured in the moto-mags and got quite a bit of attention (it was the first Buell to circle Daytona when Erik used it for the parade lap of the first Buell race).

If I were doing one today, I'd do just like I did my Buell S-2 (still sitting at NRHS waiting for me to pick it up) I'd send it, tell'em what a want and never look back.

Capable and trustworthy.

They are not the only one. But there are none better.
