Yes, another tire thread, (i am crosseyed from reading 8 to 15 year old posts on tires) but figured tires keep evolving and new/discontinued sizes may change up the game.

I am looking for a tire to use at Ocotillo wells in CA, sand and rocks, with the slight chance of flash flood(was offroading the xj in one out there). I have an extra set of rims, (hell, have an extra ULY too, lol), and want to set those up for off road, so I am not very concerned too much with street manners. It is 100 miles from home to the desert playground through the mountains, then off roading.
I am seeing the pirelli mt60rs, pirelli scorpion rally str, avon av53/54 trailrider, TKC 80s(hard to find front), and metzeler karoo tires available in our sizes. I commute on my street tires 130 miles daily, but was looking for some cheap offroad tires to toss on for the weekends out in borrego.

Ok, hit me with the suggestions.

I've got the Shinko 705's on my bike. Front is a little noisy, but not bad.

They seem to wear well.

How do the 705s do in the sand and rocks? Have you used a different tread before to compare it to?

The TKC 80s are great in gravel, decent in mud.

Tires are personal opinion thing, and personally I have a bad opinion of Shinko 705's.

I have Shinko 705's on right now and would not recommend them. What little I've done on gravel, loose dirt and sand has left me unsettled. I would not feel comfortable moving quickly offroad in them.

And just to pile on - I don't like them that much on the road either. At 100+ mph they get squirmy and slight variations in PSI make a huge difference in stability.

YMMV

I don't do any serious sand, but I've done some trails and lots of gravel with my Avon Trailriders and have been happy. Wear is average. Handling on-road is great, wet or dry. Not real noisy, either.

Two Cents; Was wondering about making room under the front fender for a Kenda K761 120/90/17

I'm thinking the taller profile would be a useful advantage off road.
Maybe best for dry country after reading this
