The plastic I placed over the shifter shaft is hung inside the cover...
Can I leave any in there? I don't want to pull the case back off & scar the new seal ... Suggestions?

As expensive as transmission repairs can be on this bike.
A 30 dollar gasket is going to be cheaper.
Than a repair caused because a FOD (plastic) blocked an oiling hole for a gear or bearing.
I am speaking speculatively as I do not have an intimate knowledge of the XB transmission construction.

What kind of plastic?

I wouldn't think there's much danger of it getting loose and into the transmission, but if it's still stuck between the seal and the shifter shaft, it seems you're apt to have a leak there.

I'd keep trying to pull it out. Worst that can happen is you'll pull the new shifter shaft seal out.

re teeps - agreed, but 30 buckazoids for ANY gasket is still FRACKING extortion.

No argument from me on that.

I know now how my uncle felt, back in the '70s, when he would lament on the difference in motorcycle parts prices then, as compared to the '40/50s when he first rode.

Of course we forget that we made 1/10 of the wages we make now, compared to then.

Pulled the cover & managed to re use the primary cover gasket. I did install a new shifter shaft seal AFTER I put the cover back on - easy that way LOL.

The new gearing makes it a sprinter for sure... 75-80 is ok on the freeway - it used to like 90.
I think I'm gonna like it.

What kind of mileage are you guys getting with the xb9 gearing? I consistently return 50 mpg on the stock gearing. MY wallet likes that!

I'd kill for 50mpg on my XT. I very consistently get 38 or 39mpg in this hilly, two-lane, 10% ethanol, stop-n-go western PA terrain.

my 09 gets about 45 highway with the xb9 primary, the same as before the swap (verified on a 430 mile day recently). I've got 51 only once. 06-07 models seem to get better mileage.

With the new metal gaskets, provided you handle them carefully, I've had no problem reusing one or two times.

The old paper ones were the problem. You had a 50/50 chance that they would hold the first time, and no chance of any reuse.

My '06 gets 46-49mpg in normal mountain road/sprited riding with the XB9 gearing for 5 years. About the same as the mileage with the stock gearing.
Maybe it would be a bit lower if I was doing a lot of expressway, but I rarely do that for more than 20-30 miles on a full riding day.

Well this is looking better and better... I'd love the quick pick up and a bit shorter first gear. Didn't want to give up the economy.

Dean, if you clean the splines on the shifter shaft and wrap them in some thin tape you can pull the cover off without hurting that seal.

Hmmm. I've had my primary cover off at least 4 times over the years (not recently).
I never covered the splines at all, and never replaced the shift shaft seal.
Sounds like I am lucky I don't have a leak (yet).

I dont find myself in fourth on the freeway anymore. 75-80 you're ok. Accelerates more quickly at any realistically normal road speed.
Don't catch myself looking down surprised to find I'm going 90+
