2009 XT, got the wheel off for a new tire and I noticed the bearings feel stiff, hard to spin with a surgical glove on.. is that normal?
should I just change them out? they have the black seal..20k on bike.
not sure I trust myself with this job, can it be buggered?
I don't have enough money to buy the '10 wheel right now at least.

When I didn't mine on my 06 x a few weeks ago they were super easy to replace. I got the bearings at the local miller bearing store for $10 each. Threw them in the freezer, used a $40 blind hole bearing puller from harbor freight and pulled the old bearings out.

Installing them you have to install one side before the other, I think it was the brake side first, then install the spacer and the other side bearing. I got the bearings in with a small hammer taping lightly on the putter race. With the bearings being cold next to no effort was needed to get new ones in.

Bearings can be a bit stiff to turn by hand. I replaced mine when they were either rough or squealing when turning.

Mine were always hard to turn by finger pressure from new. I replaced the first set when they went bad, squealing and grinding. Second set went away when they were trailing rust on the left side.

I would rig up a two plate and a piece of all-thread system as an installer...I don't put much faith in pounding them in with a hammer...I've done it on other bikes and have gotten away with it...But the older i get the wiser i get....

Replace them now. Don't wait for them to break. They're much harder to extract after they break. If you graduated high school and have a decent set of tools you are probably better qualified for this job than the kid in the back room of the shop you would pay money to to screw up your rim.

When I change my wheel bearings I put the bearings in a freezer for a day and heat the wheel hub with a heat gun to the point that it is too hot to touch. The bearings will slip right in with an adjustment hammer tap to make sure the inner race of the belt side is touching the inner spacer.

Stuff is normal, you don't want crunchy or notchy, and you don't want any play in the races.

I have an 09 with the black bearings. I currently have 22,000 miles on mine. They are stiff to turn by hand, however they don't feel notchy or galled. If they do replace them. I have been re-greasing mine every 6,000 miles or so. I use a dental type tool to remove the seal from the bearing and press in new bearing grease. Then push the seals back in place. So far so good, no bearing failures yet.

Shucks, I never took 1 pic..
got the new tire mounted at my KTM dealer who I really trust.. He said bearings were fine so I put the new Angel ST on with a new drive belt from American Sport Bike. (nice packaging, belt was all laid out with no tight rolls) got a spare now..
but geez you have to get out a lot of tools to swap a tire or belt.
about 4 or more hex tools, and you need different styles of torx27 to reach access little stuff like the fender screws.
had to buy 3/8 and 1/4 hex sockets for the other parts..

sorry I have full kit of metric.. I think there was a metric bolt mixed in there too..
are you supposed to take the pinch bolt out and put on lock tight? (the Buell rule?)
it's a real piddly job, hope I never have to do it on the side of a freeway (the spare belt).
the stock tool kit is lame.. to get the axle loose I bent the assist tool trying to free it.. I put a 1/2" drive socket to it w/breaker bar, no problem but will I carry all that on a trip? and the torq wrench to re assemble?

I love the Uly but in tiny print I must say this operation on my Guzzi would take about 1/3 the tools and 1/3rd the time to get done..}
