My 08 has a Jardine muffler with the quiet insert, open air box mod, and EBR ECM. The muffler is too loud for my tastes and I would like to go back to stock. I assume I need to send the ECM back to EBR for reprogramming, correct? What about physically reinstalling the stock muffler? Is there some sort of cable for actuating an exhaust valve that would have been taken off by the original owner when he installed the Jardine? I remember my ZX10R had something like that.
Thanks.

Remove your airbox cover, you should see a motor on top with what looks like a clutch cable coming out of it and routing down towards the seat and out of sight.

If you have that end, you're golden.

The other end is on the right side of the bike, down under the cam cover. It has a metal 90 degree bend at the end and you should see the cable coming out the end of the sheath. I recently replaced the VR on my '06 so I was in there anyway...here's a pic of the area, yellow circle is around the bottom end of the cable:

You might try wiring the stock muffler open and keeping the ecm. It will be louder than stock but much quieter than the Jardine. I don't do it because I'm still using a stock ecm but I have temporarily opened it and it sounds nice, not Loud at all.

Reckon I could start out trying that. Now I just need to find a stock muffler.

My 17 year old grandson bought a '06 Lightning a couple of days ago. His only complaint is that it is too quite.
Does anyone know if Dmcuter's Jardine will fit his bike? If so, I might be in the market for his leftovers.

Maybe a direct swap, muffler for muffler. Win-win.

That could work. Now I gotta remember if we'll need to just send in the stock ECM for reprogram or if we'll need to purchase a Race ECM for it.
Can anyone confirm?

If you have a "race" ecm, it will work well with the stock muffler so I would try it before getting ahead of yourself. I have a "race" ecm on mine and it works better than stock with the stock can and way better with my gutted can.

Remember not to reuse the front muffler band clamp.

Thanks, Rwcfrank. That sounds good for Dmcutter, but what about for me with a stock ECM on the '06 Lightning and looking at installing the Jardine?

Trying to figure freight cost to NC from Texas. Does anyone know how much the stock muffler weighs?

Yes. My stock 08 XT muffler weighs 17.5 lbs.

Thanks for the weight, Motorbike. And thanks for the clamp reminder Natexlh1000. I'll get a couple on order from American Sport Bike right away.
Dmcutter, I think this is gonna work out!

Sweet. As I've pushed up the mileage recently I've noticed a slight surge or stumble at constant throttle between 2500 and 3000 rpm. I thought the EBR ECM was supposed to cure the rough running at lower rpm. I'll see how it acts with the stock muffler wired open and if it's no better I'll send it back to EBR for reprogramming.

You're going to have a flat spot with the muffler wired open.

Get the computer flashed to match a working muffler. The valve is there for a reason...let it do its job.

There is a muffler tip clearance issue between the XBs and the XB12Xs, right? Not so sure it is a direct swap.

I was not aware of that...isn't the Uly's wheelbase longer so an XB muffler should fit even if it's tip is longer? Obviously I'm just guessing, here. Going the other way, the Jardine appears to be several inches shorter than the stock so fit shouldn't be an issue.

"Tip interference" is only with the side stand going "clunk" into the outlet when you raise it to ride. The Uly tip is shaped to clear the longer kickstand.

does that mean the side stand is blocked by the time and can't come all the way up, or does it just graze it on it's way up?

Can't recall. I want to say its close to all the way up but rests against the tip and not the bumper.

But it's far enough up so a sane man would not drag it in a turn?

When ya find a stock set up, have it coated - I had mine " nitro plated " here in Nashville, Tn.
Can I send someone a pic so you can post it?
Header & muffler were $107... Cost more for darker coating, but I wanted a Remus look.
Did a comfort kit & race computer & the heat reduction is great!

The kickstand does not present any road clearance issues at all:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/662002.html?1325095524

If you're stopped with your left leg down, the exhaust does exit onto your leg.

Perhaps that happens on the bikes that use that muffler normally, and maybe the Uly muffler does the same thing -- I'm not sure.

No big deal, it just makes my riding pants stink a little.

Hmmm...my side stand has a Touratech foot on the bottom...not sure what it's made of, but if it isn't all steel it's going to get burned up

where's the challenge in that? Goes against my training as a Marine to make do the best you can with field expedients.

There's only a challenge when you don't have the right tool for the job. I usually exhaust (no pun) the right-tool option before I go getting creative.

I found a stock muffler from an 06 with the exhaust valve so reprogramming of the ECM is in the cards. Anyone know if HD dealers that sold Buells are capable of reprogramming or does it require a trip back to EBR? I have a little gizmo from Cobb Tuning for my Subaru that just plugs into the OBD and lets me load different fuel maps...seems like reprogramming should be able to be done remotely. I have emailed EBR about this also, but just wondered if anyone here knew...

Dealers do not have the ability to reprogram your Race ECM, it is an aftermarket part. You might as well ask them to clean a virus off your home computer, at least they might have someone who knows how to do that!

Yes you will have to send it back to EBR and pay the small reprogramming fee, but it will be worth it. It could be done by yourself (or remotely) if you did have the tuning software and the unlocked version of the Race ECM not the plain preprogrammed one.

Meh. Not so concerned about the cost as the time it will take...hopefully that's a pretty quick turnaround.
