While changing my intake seals last week I noticed that my rear cylinder is dirty from what appears to be a rocker box cover leak.

I have two questions:

1) Is the sportster seal the same as the XB?

2) Do I have to remove and re-seal the whole thing or just the top cover?

It would appear to me that removing the lower portion is more work and means I have to replace a number of other seals (at least that's how it looks to me). If it is only leaking from the top cover should I bother changing everything?

Thanks!

Assuming that the only issue is the rocker box seal then it is my understanding that you do not have to replace everything else. When in doubt send Al at A.S.B. a line and he will confirm ... I just went through the part negotiation and order process myself. One warning I will give you is not to wait too long to replace the gasket. I did ... so I also had to add a $140 fan that burned out from the oil. It wasn't immediate but it did happen quicker than I thought it would. My repair bill went up quite a bit with that one new part. Changing out the gasket does give you an opportunity to mess with other stuff while your taking care of that though. I am currently in the middle of an engine rotation for the gasket and fan, I'm also going to change the plugs & plug wires, put on a new front isolator, line the inside of the frame with Thermotec heat barrier, and send my headers off for Jet Hot coating. If you have not done an engine rotation I am keeping notes based on my research and pictures as I go so send me a PM if interested. Good luck.

I did change my parts list after corresponding with Al.

I just realized that I rambled on and did not answer your very first question. The gasket kit from Harley has all kinds of stuff in it. The part# for it from A.S.B. is listed in my parts list on the second link I sent. If you go out to American Sport Bike and search for that part# I'm sure Al has a better description of what all is in it.

This is not my day. You can't search for that part# (17196) sorry. You can find it by looking under Buell > XB12X > Engine / Transmission / Drivetrain ... and then gasket sets. I think I originally search for "gasket" and then wrote Al to make sure I was looking at the right thing. There is an all inclusive gasket writeup that Al did here on BadWeb at:

NOTE: Make sure you get the metal laminated rocker gaskets, not the paper ones or you'll be doing it again in 10K miles and double check your rubber "o-ring" rocker cover seals to make sure they stand proud of the seal groove when installed in the lower half of the rocker cover castings. I found out that mine were not even touching the other part when assembled.... probably why my rocker covers were leaking in the first place, not necessarily the gasket leaking. I had to put some silicone in the bottom of the o-ring groove, let it set up and then install the o-ring seal. Solved all my problems. Otherwise, not too hard to do, good luck.
