I figured I would jump on the bandwagon. My 08 VR has been slowly going south. On rare occasions my voltmeter spikes, and headlights get extra bright, but it is yet to last more than a moment or blow a bulb, so I am currently too lazy to install the spare brand new VR I have laying around. Damn you Crusty, why did you sell me such an unreliable piece of turd? |

It takes the 40 or so V's from the stator that are AC and then R's it to 14V in DC. (Message edited by froggy on April 26, 2013) |

Jamba, VR = Voltage Regulator, V = Volts, AC = Alternating Current and DC = Direct Current. Not sure what R's means, Froggy? I assume it means Regulates? (Message edited by motorbike on April 26, 2013) |

"R's" means froggy has too much caffeine in his system and is posting goofy stuff.... |

A brand new VR in the box? That's easier than changing a rear tire in a snow storm. Froggy aught to know. |

Its a combination unit. AC to DC and then controls the volt output to the battery/bike. Froggy. "On rare occasions my voltmeter spikes, and headlights get extra bright". Your VR is toast and it may damage the ECM or other of the bike in the end. The idea of the voltmeter is to warn of this as anything over 15.1v can be a problem. I would change it out as soon as you can. On old bikes it was less of a problem as would just kill the lamps and/or boil the battery dry. On some Dukes it could even split the battery. Modern bikes, cars as well, with all the electronics need a correct charge rate. |
