Does anyone know if a Duralast TPS4129 from Auto Zone will work on my 09 Uly? Can it be installed without removing the throttle body? Hopefully this will cure my bike.

A throttle position sensor can be replaced without removing the throttle body. I wouldn't replace it with anything but a OEM part.
Are you sure the TPS is bad, or are you throwing diagnostic darts at it? What's the running symptom anyway?

In '07 they changed the pin position on the throttle body... the Autozone one won't work anymore on the Uly.

Does this autozone TPS sensor work on an '06? Is it the same in every way to the Buell OEM sensor?

Hey there General. the autozone TPS MIGHT work on the 06. With my 06 I actually have the new TPS. Pretty sure it came that way from the factory. You'll know if there's a red dot on the top of it. There's plenty of other things that'll wear out or break before that TPS though.

Hey guys sorry about that ... I never looked up that P/N ... I thought you were talking about Duralast #TPS213 ('93 Mustang)

The TPS213 works for the early Ulys until as documented by this service bulletin

Uly dude .... your right, I bought a new TPS a while back and it was a waste of money ... turned out not to be the problem.

I bought a head temp sensor a couple of years ago for my 06 ULY and naturally I now own 2 perfectly good head temp sensors. On the bright side, I have a spare.

Well if it wasn't for stabbing in the dark and blindly replacing parts that aren't needed, I wouldn't be able fix anything.

In all seriousness, it would still be nice to know if there is a cheap widely available TPS available down the street in the unlikely future event of a failure. Trying to build my 06 database in anticipation of weird electrical problems I keep reading about.

Zane,

Yes, I'm kinda throwing darts at it. The bike ran perfect the first 15,000 miles, then started stalling, spitting, erratic idle, etc. at lower rpm's. Above 3000 rpm and full throttle it hauls ass. I installed an EBR ecm, iridium plugs, IAT, IAC, O2 sensor and k&n air filter. I ran across an older post from a guy with an 08 with similar problems and a new TPS fixed it. I think it was a post in ADV Rider that listed the Auto Zone part # that works on 08 + XB's. The AZ tps is about $60 cheaper than oem. This part # is used on BMW bikes and cars. I'm going to give it a shot. I'll post the results.

ps- Don't know why my first post was ANON, must have fat fingered it.

That's kind of neat to find out that an aftermarket TPS will work and is that much cheaper than OEM. I'd probably toss one at my bike if it had similar issues. I, too, have a couple of perfectly good cylinder head temp sensors laying around after having one just being loose in the head from the factory and the other I aquired when debris stuck to my oil fouled cooling fan, blowing the fan fuse.

It wasn't the sensor that failed on my TPS but rather the wiring. The black wire had pulled out about 1/8". After replacing it with the TPS213 from AZ, it runs/idles perfectly.

Anyone know why exactly Buell changed the TPS on the 07. Why is it supposed to be better than the 06 TPS? We now know, thanks to Red450, that an Auto Zone TPS213 at $35.00 will work on the 06 ULY. What will work on the 07' is now the question. By the way, $90 is pretty steep for a $35 part. I assume the connector is different but that doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Red450,
Tell us if there is a connector difference and if so, what you did to correct that. Thanks. Maybe a photo of the difference.

I believe only certain 06 models can use the Duralast TPS.

There was no difference in the connector. It was all plug and play.

I know it's Nov but I can't remember if it's 05 or 06. I would think it would be 05 since Nov of 06 would probably be sold as an 07.

Red450,
Is that you in the video, from your blog, on the KLR riding it over that cliff. Holy smokes. You are both unlucky and very lucky. I feel your pain. Riding that close to the drop off was giving me the willies just watching it and then when you rode off and managed to survive. Your moaning and groaning told the whole story and to think you might have gone even farther with the bike. You'd have been a goner for sure had you gone on down the next drop off with the KLR. I couldn't help but read the entire story. My two cents worth is that the back of the bike was maybe too heavy and unbalanced the bike. Glad that you lived to tell the tale. Also glad that helmet camera was able to record the whole thing, incredible.

No, thankfully it's not me!

I found it on ADVrider and had to share.

I removed the tps and took it to Auto Zone. They didn't stock the 4129 but had very clear pictures. It looks exactly the same. They did verify it is used on several BMW cars. I ordered one, should be here Friday. $85.99

Update - I got the tps from Auto Zone friday night. It is exactly the same as the same as the original. Same mfg, made in w. Germany. Installed it saturday and it seems to have cured the erratic idle on my bike.

I checked and the advance Auto parts site also sells the TPS213 and it includes several very clear pictures:

http://tinyurl.com/ch7ymum

If you buy the part at advance website - even if they have the part in stock at your local store - you can get special discounts. Just google promo discount codes for advance auto parts and they're all over the place. You type the code in after you fill your shopping cart and go to check out, it's real easy. I got 30% off just yesterday for the parts I ordered for my Honda Civic. Then stopped by the local store (just an hour later) and they were sitting there waiting for me. If I had just walked in and bought them they would have been 30% more expensive. With discount comes out to about $28 for the TPS213, pretty good. If anyone has the other part number for the one that fits a BMW, try that and see what you get.

DjohnK thanks for the link to the service bulletin! Do you know if there are any sources or sites with all of the service bulletins for Ulys, especially those that pertain to the '06 models? Thanks.

General ... sorry I stumbled across that specific service bulletin because someone else posted it when when I was researching TPS sensors for my Uly.
I kept it for future reference. I don't know any source for them.

Buellmeister57, how did you do the install? Did you have to do a reset after you installed the new one?

Thanks

From my understanding, anytime you move/remove or replace the TPS you need to do a reset so the ECM is zeroed properly.

Scotty

My Uly is an 09, tps resets are easy, open and close the throttle 3 times. Installing the tps wasn't too hard, had to buy a 7mm wrench. Bottom fastener was a little tricky. It runs much better now.

Did you have to do the "true zero" procedure, or did you just slap it on? I bought a new one and I noticed the tabs inside that make contact with the throttle body are in different positions compared to the one that came off the bike. I'm guessing a TPS reset actually moves those tabs....
