As long as we're strolling down memory lane...

I recall the Honda CB750 with a little sadness. It helped make motorcycles more about function instead of form, dependability instead of beauty.

As a young boy I had a real passion for Triumphs (and Nortons and BSA's). Yes, years later when I actually _owned_ a few British bikes I learned that looks aren't everything.

But no matter how ground-breaking the CB750 was, nothing is as beautiful as a late Sixties Bonneville.

I also owned a Kawasaki H1 500 triple and I NEVER saw Honda that could compete with my Kawasaki. I survived the widow maker!

In a straight line your H1 was ok.

But the H1 was notorious for having a rubber-band frame with a hinge in the middle.

On a twisty road around any curve it would shudder, wobble and weave and scare the poop out of even the best riders.

500 cc kawasaki triple... with drum brakes. What could go wrong?!?!

I restored one of those 71 Bison (250 cc rotary valve two stroke). Those motors were STRONG.

Hey those are great old pics. That was a great time and place to be 23 years old. You also had a lot more disposable cash in your youth than I ever did, more power to ya.

What I had was a very loving Depression-era father, and the luck to be an only child. He worked like a dog to give me the things he never had. I was one of those fortunate kids whom indulgence didn't ruin (I think).

I wish I could have done as well by my own four boys, but unfortunately I think not.

PS. Re the Mach III: In grad school in the Bay Area in 1970 I got suckered into the Marin County "Sunday Morning Ride" one weekend. Had quite a battle with a Mach III---I unknowingly ran the toll booth at the Golden Gate coming back into SF, but he (I was leading) paid my toll! Mach III riders were good guys...

What a bunch of crap? We have it here in the UK. Old dogs into old school rubbish thinking a 69 Ford Escort is something special. You need, and at that age, medical help.

1 month after my purchase of a '71 Mach III, 1 hour fresh out of the Navy and my first motorcycle, I saw the error of my ways and bought a new 71 Norton Commando. I'm fortunate to have survived the Kawasaki. I miss that Commando, drum brakes and all.

A little 500 Daytona I built for my first wife.

<edit> It started out as 2 rolling chassis and 3 motors... all in boxes.
