Hi guys:

My Ulysses will not start at times. It makes a noise that I think is the starter. After an hour letting it quiet, sometimes starts but with problems. Yesterday almost call the tow truck.

In the file you can hear the sound it makes. It seems the bendix??? Please help me!

Thank you very much ..https://soundcloud.com/david-hd-2/nota

Yes that sounds like the starter clutch (bendix).
relatively easy to replace if your mechanical.

Bendix yes. But also sounds like low voltage to the starter. Check battery and all connections from battery to starter.

Starter bendix.

Plenty of juice, solenoid(bendix) isn't kicking the starter gear out so it can engage the ring-gear on the clutch hub.
Starter motor spins up fine.

Sometimes you can fix/replace the solenoid, my books are at work tho so I don't know.
<edit> On my old iron-head Sporty, it was a separate part.
On the Thunderstorm motor I thinks it's all integral...

Worst case, replace the whole starter assy.

Or use the old hot-rodder's trick, and whack it with a stick, or a rock, or something. Sometimes that will knock some sense into it, and it will start long enough to get you home.

Bad (dirty, loose, or broken) battery cable connections can do that as well. As can a half broken wire in the wire bundle going up around the steering head up into the flyscreen.

When it does it, try turning the handlebars full lock left and hitting the starter button, then full lock right and hitting the button, then center. See if that has an effect.

Might have a look at this. More cranking power. Not much money.

The problem has been that the bendix is broken. Anyway, as I wanted to change the whole starter, I bought one in the link above, and all perfect. The starting power is superior and cleaner. I recommend it.

They say that the starters do not usually break XB. Anyway, if today is the tomorrow will bendix else. So better new one.
