so... just figured I'd tighten up the instrument panel... because it seemed kind of loose and floppy... Didnt realize there was a bottom bolt that had no nut whatsoever and after mild torque on one of the top nuts managed to snap it off....

So... not wanting to do further damage... is the bold threaded on both ends? can I just remove it with a pair of vice grips? Or do I need to crack open the instrument cluster? Or get a new one?

IIRC the speedo is hold through three grommets for absorbing the vibes.

It is normal that the display has some movement.

If it makes you feel any better, that happened to me, I took off the instrument panel and disassembled it to install the Signal Dynamics voltage meter LED. (The absolute best mod you can make to your bike for thirty bucks, by the way.) Like you, when re-installing I forgot that the grommets were there to provide some float and over torqued, breaking off the bolt. In my case, because I parted out my 07, I had a spare case and swapped them. I can't remember if I inspected it close enough to tell if the bolt was replaceable, but opening the case is really not that difficult, just a lot of *ahem* screwing around.

This sort of thing is why many things in this world are so screwed up. Many a problem, with this bike, has been caused by those who have "NO IDEA WHAT SO EVER" of what they are doing. Anyone who thinks you need to "Torque-up" a 10mm nut clearly has no idea of what they are doing. You would not know a bike if it fell on you?

That's a bit harsh don't you think, Ulyman?
I've been "fixing things" since I was 5 or 6 years old. That's my nature.
I doubt Cmgavio put a 0-250 ft-lb torque wrench on the nut, he just tightened it a tad too much. easy to do any day...

I have broken a few things in the "learning process" but Broken:Fixed is a small ratio...

I have no idea of the answer here, so initially I said nothing...

No offense Uly_man as I've seen some constructive posts from you...

but really? If you don't have something constructive to add then why waste your time posting?

You're right, many a problem is caused by people who have no idea what they're doing. And in my industry (IT) it means that when they it up, maybe I help them for free on a forum (with pointers) or they come to me and say can you fix and I'll pay you.

As Zac4Mac noted, it wasnt like I put a giant wrench on the thing... just grabbed my 1/4 drive socket and with very little effort broke the thing off. Was it dumb? yes. But just like anywhere, I think you learn by doing and by making mistakes... Sometimes hopefully you learn from other people's mistakes so that you don't make them.

Maybe I wouldn't know a bike if it fell over on me... It's hard to work on your own stuff when you don't have a garage or dry space to start a project in and leave it if you dont finish in a few hours. I've largely been content to hand it off to the dealer in the past...but since the dealer is 50 minutes away now and I'm planning a long trip to Latin America (And maybe further) I've decided that its worth my while to learn how to do some of this stuff on my own. Since I was already in there installing HID bulbs I figured I'd just tighten it a bit. I should have consulted the service manual for the correct torque (and almost always do). So yeah.. I it up through my lack of experience. I admit it. i'm not going to whine about it and I'm consulting you experts here for any pointers. I guess you woke up one day and were an expert.

FWIW, I drilled it out, tapped it and put a small bolt on that post...

and yeah, broken:fixed so far I'm still ahead of the game.....so far....
