Is it possible to change the rear sprocket on the XT to one with fewer teeth to give more low range pull? I'm thinking of a quick fix untill I get a new set of bigger headers.

Changing to XB9 primary gearing is the easiest way. You change the front sprocket/rotor and chain for about an 11% difference in ratio.

You got it mixed, it would be a bigger rear sprocket or a smaller front pulley, this is not possible un less is a chain driven bike.

So the option is the XB9 primary gearing.

Actually, Baker Drive Train has a 26th sprocket that will fit the Buell line.

However, you would have to find a way to modify the belt tensioner to keep it under constant tension.

Good Luck

The xb9 kit is the easiest way to get what you are after. Have had mine in for 15k and would not have it any other way. It is a fairly easy install, as well.

That sprocket looks to be for an 08 or newer models if your bike is an 07 it will not work.

According to his profile, his bike is an 08. You need the sprocket, a different primary chain, a new crankshaft bolt, and a primary cover gasket.

American Sport Bike sells everything you need in a kit: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/A17192.html

The eBay sprocket is for a 2007 and prior. The 2008 and up comes with the rotor and sprocket together.

Cheers for that Hughlysses, can anyone who has this installed tell me the difference in top speed?

well i guess if gear reduction is 11% i suppose top speed decreases acordingly, i seem to remember some one saying that you would be working 300 revs above of the XB12 stock primary.

It might not actually decrease your top speed at all; it depends on whether the bike was capable of hitting redline in 5th gear with the stock primary ratio or not. Often a motorcycle will achieve the same or even a slightly higher top speed in 4th gear because the engine can achieve maximum RPM in that gear.

If you can find a detailed road test on the Uly showing the top speed in each gear, it'll answer this question.

I absolutely love a belt drive but I've always fealt that the fixed tension belt pulley is a design flaw. It should have been either adjustable, with lock nuts, or used a very heavy spring tensioning. That would allow for nearly whatever belt drive ratio the end user wants and also make belt changes much easier.

I have an XB9 gearing kit from American Sportbike that I bought and never installed. I'm never going to install it so it's just collecting dust.

I opened the box to look at it but other than that, it's as new and never used.

If anyone is interested, let me know.

Tipsy:

May we inquire as to what years it would fit?

Thanks

My bike is a 2008 XB12X. I would imagine a quick look at the American Sportbike website would clear up any questions concerning compatible models.

I swapped my '06 Uly gearing for XB9 a few years ago and really like it for my mountain riding. It's OK for highway as long as you are not planning on running 80mph+ all day.
Can't say about top speed, as I have never attempted a top speed run before or after.
I would think it only matters for track use of speed demons, which I would think is not really the Uly forte.
Anyhow, I suspect it would not drop top speed by much at all, since it seems that the Uly would be top speed limited by air drag at our horsepower levels. I could be wrong though - just my theory that I do not plan to test.
